Agrispon has been promoted in Western Canada as a soil supplement that provides plant-available nitrogen via undefined catalytic as well as microbial processes. Testing was undertaken in a controlled environment and under field conditions, to substantiate claims made by manufacturers and promoters that this product enhances germination and availability of nitrogen to plants. Characterization of the microbial composition of this product was also undertaken. Germination of Neepawa hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was not influenced in a greenhouse study. Growth chamber studies did not show any beneficial effect of Agrispon on total dry matter, grain yield or protein content of Neepawa wheat. Field studies with Canuck hard red spring wheat gave similar results to those obtained in the growth chamber i. e., no benefit in grain yield or protein content of Agrispon-treated plants. Analysis of soil samples taken at the end of the experiment also revealed no treatment effect of Agrispon or N fertilizer on available NO−3-N or NH4+-N levels. Microbiological determinations revealed relatively low populations of common soil organisms.Key words: Agrispon, Nitro/Max, soil supplement, bacterial population, fertilizer

Trifluralin is used for weed control in wheat but may reduce vegetative growth and yield. Postemergence (POST) herbicides may cause additional plant stress to trifluralin-stressed wheat. Field studies at Groton, SD in 1991 and 1992 and at Highmore, SD in 1992 evaluated the effects of 2,4-D-amine, difenzoquat, metsulfuron, and a combination of fenoxaprop-ethyl + 2,4-D-ester + MCPA-ester on hard red spring wheat cultivars ‘2375,’ ‘Prospect,’ and ‘Butte 86’ seeded in areas treated with preplant incorporated trifluralin either in the spring before seeding (0.56 kg ai/ha) or the previous year (1.12 or 2.24 kg ai/ha). Trifluralin applied alone in the spring, and followed by some POST herbicides, reduced shoot dry weight and grain yield. Trifluralin reduced the yield of Prospect the most and the yield of 2375 the least. Yields of trifluralin-treated wheat were reduced 23% by metsulfuron and 14% by fenoxaprop-ethyl + 2,4-D + MCPA compared to yields of wheat treated with only the respective POST herbicide. Yields were not reduced with any trifluralin-POST herbicide combination when trifluralin was applied a year prior to seeding wheat.

Based on 38 replicated trials over 3 yr, Alvena, hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) expressed significantly higher mean grain yield than the checks. It was significantly earlier maturing than AC Barrie and significantly more resistant to lodging than Katepwa. Wheat protein concentration of Alvena was similar to the mean of the checks and flour protein concentration was significantly higher than the check mean. Amylograph viscosity was significantly lower than the mean of the checks. Alvena meets the end-use quality and Canadian Grain Commission’s kernel visual distinguishability specifications of the Canada Western Red Spring wheat market class. Alvena expressed moderate resistance to prevalent races of loose smut and stem rust, intermediate resistance to prevalent races of leaf rust and common bunt, and moderate susceptibility to fusarium head blight. Lillian, hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), exhibited reduced cutting by the wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Nort.) and is adapted to the Canadian prairies. Lillian produced significantly more grain yield than AC Abbey and Neepawa and its grain yield and protein concentration were similar to AC Barrie. It matured significantly earlier than Superb and Laura, and had improved resistance to leaf rust and leaf spotting diseases compared to AC Abbey. Lillian is eligible for all grades of the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat class. Based on 34 replicated trials over 3 yr, Stettler, a doubled haploid hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), expressed significantly higher grain yield than all checks except Superb. Wheat and flour protein concentration were significantly greater than all of the checks except Lillian. It matured significantly later than AC Barrie and Katepwa but earlier than Superb. Stettler was significantly shorter than all of the checks except Superb and was more resistant to lodging than Katepwa and Laura. Stettler had high grain volume weight and intermediate kernel weight relative to the checks, and meets the end-use quality specifications of the Canada Western Red Spring wheat market class. Stettler expressed resistance to prevalent races of stem rust, common bunt and loose smut, with moderate susceptibility to prevalent races of leaf rust and fusarium head blight.Key words: Triticum aestivum L., cultivar description, grain yield, protein, disease resistance, doubled haploid

AAC Castle, an awned hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), cultivar, combines high grain yield and good agronomic characteristics with excellent resistance to leaf, stem, stripe rust, common bunt and loose smut. It also expressed tolerance to the orange wheat blossom midge. Based on 39 station years of data in the registration trials from 2014 to 2016, the grain yield of AAC Castle was about 17% higher than 5700PR but similar to the other checks. AAC Castle was significantly shorter than AAC Foray and CDC Terrain, but had similar lodging resistance and maturity. AAC Castle had higher test weight, protein concentration, falling number and flour yield than AAC Foray and CDC Terrain. AAC Castle is eligible for grade of the Canada Prairie Spring Red wheat market class.

Field studies were conducted at two locations over 3 yr to evaluate the effect of surface placement of urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and urea fertilizers, with and without the urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) on straw and grain yield of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown under reduced tillage management. Ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) was also evaluated as a urease inhibitor with UAN. Surface sprayed applications of UAN were frequently less effective than dribble-banded UAN applications or broadcast or dribble-banded urea in increasing grain or straw yield of hard red spring wheat. Use of NBPT with the sprayed UAN increased its effectiveness, so that grain and straw yields were similar to those with urea or with surface dribble-banded UAN. Addition of NBPT to broadcast or banded urea did not increase straw or grain yield under the conditions of this study. While there was some indication that use of ATS with UAN may have had a limited effect on fertilizer efficiency, it did not increase final grain yield as compared with dribble-banded or spray UAN applied alone or with NBPT. If surface nitrogen (N) applications are used in reduced tillage systems, spray applications of UAN should be avoided in favour of dribble-band applications, or the use of urea. Alternately, NBPT may be effective in improving the efficacy of spray UAN.

Combining ability analysis in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) involving 10 diverse parents and their 45 F1 and F2 progenies indicated significant differences between the parents for GCA and between the crosses for SCA for all the characters studied. The GCA and SCA components of variance were significant for all the traits. However, the GCA component of variance was predominant, indicating the predominance of additive gene effects for the traits studied. Among the parents HD 2329, Raj 1972, HD 2285 and HD 2428 were the best general combiners for grain yield and average to high combiners for other important traits. The best specific crosses for grain yield were CPAN 3004 × Durgapura 65, Sonalika × HD 2329, Raj 3077 × CPAN 3004, Raj 3077 × HD 2428 and HD 2428 × WH 157.The parent Raj 1972 was the best general combiner for grain yield and protein content, while Raj 3077 and Lok-1 were the best general combiners for protein content. The most suitable specific crosses for protein content were HD 2329 x HD 2285, HD 2428 × Raj 1972 and CPAN 3004 × WH 157. Most of the specific crosses for grain yield and protein content involved high × average, average × average or average × poor general combiners. To ensure a further increase in grain yield along with high protein, combinations of desirable yield components are advocated. The exploitation of additive and non-additive gene actions through bi-parental mating and/or diallel selective mating systems are suggested for a tangible advance in grain yield coupled with high protein in spring wheat.

Lovitt hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is adapted to the Canadian prairies. Lovitt is earlier maturing than AC Barrie with similar grain yield and smaller kernels. Lovitt has resistance to prevalent races of leaf and stem rust and loose smut. Lovitt has very good pre-harvest sprouting resistance similar to RL4137. AAC Crossfield, an awned hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar, combines high grain yield and good agronomic characteristics with excellent resistance to leaf, stem, and stripe rust. AAC Crossfield is significantly shorter than Conquer and AAC Foray, and has maturity, straw strength, and test weight similar to the check cultivars. AAC Crossfield has improved farinograph stability and is eligible for grade in the Canada Prairie Spring Red wheat market class.

Mathematical models of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were used to account for effects of weather on annual variations in yield and protein content on the Canadian prairies. When weather effects were calculated, other relatively slow-changing trends became much clearer. Results indicate that yields in the three major soil zones have increased an average of 806 kg ha−1, while protein contents have decreased (1.0% from 1961 to 1982). Both trends show the largest change at the beginning of the period (1961) with a levelling off at the end (1982). There seems to be an inverse relationship between yield and protein, with technology contributing to yield increases and at the same time decreasing protein content by dilution although this was not conclusively proved. Decreases in soil organic matter or other soil factors may be contributing to the protein decline but these factors were not required to explain the observed patterns in yield and percent protein. The results indicated that the potential to produce high protein wheats has decreased during the period 1961–1982.Key words: Nonlinear fitting, physical model, technology effects, protein dilution
