AN ASSESSMENT OF THE SDS-SEDIMENTATION TEST FOR THE PREDICTION OF CANADIAN BREAD WHEAT QUALITY

The ability of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) sedimentation test of Axford et al. (1978) to predict quality characteristics of Canadian bread wheats has been assessed. With appropriate modifications, the test had sufficient "inherent" sensitivity to differentiate Canadian bread wheat lines, obtained from three years of Co-op tests, on the basis of baking quality and physical dough strength. However, the correlation coefficients between SDS-sedimentation volume and the quality parameters tested were highly dependent on environment. Correlation coefficients between SDS-sedimentation volume and Remix loaf volume were strongly affected by protein content with sample sets from the same environment. Sample sets with the lowest average protein contents gave the highest correlations. With combined samples from different environments with protein contents of less than 13.0%, a high correlation coefficient (r = 0.78**) was obtained between SDS-sedimentation volume and Remix loaf volume, whereas with samples of over 14.0% protein the correlation coefficient was insignificant. With sample sets from the same environment, SDS-sedimentation volume was generally highly correlated to farinograph dough development time and extensigraph area.

SummaryTwenty-five winter wheat varieties and breeders' lines including hard and soft texture, good or poor bread and biscuit-making types were grown at two locations in the U.K. in 1977 to provide the test samples. Small-scale tests of bread-making quality including extensometer, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) sedimentation volume, residue protein, urea dispersible protein and Pelshenke tests, were compared with loaf volumes and loaf scores.Averaged over the two sites, a modified extensometer test and the SDS test gave the closest correlation with loaf volume and loaf score and were only poorly correlated with Hagberg Falling Number and percentage protein. The SDS test gave the closest correlation between sites followed by the extensometer readings; loaf volume and score had much lower values. The SDS values and extensometer readings give a better measure of the genetic differences in protein quality of varieties than loaf volume and score, being less affected by growing conditions. With its small sample size and high throughput, the SDS sedimentation volume is likely to be the most useful screening test for wheat breeding programmes.

Multi-environment trials were conducted to investigate the quality potential of synthetic-derived cultivars (SDCs) and non-synthetic-derived cultivars (NSCs) in south-western China. The environmental effect was greater than genotypic for most protein quantity and quality parameters. The genotype effect was greater for falling number and the parameters from the rapid visco analyser (RVA). In terms of group means, grain protein content, wet gluten content, falling number, and RVA parameters were all significantly lower in SDCs than NSCs. No differences in the parameters reflecting dough strength (Zeleny sedimentation volume and farinograph parameters) were found between the two groups. Significant differences existed within each group, and the degree of variation was especially great in SDCs, among which Chuanmai 104 performed well in various quality parameters. Germination index at physiological maturity varied greatly among cultivars, with the lowest being Chuanmai 104, and the SDCs significantly lower than the NSCs. Although delayed harvest resulted in a significant reduction in falling number, partial SDCs such as Chuanmai 104 and Chuanmai 42 expressed relatively small reductions. In summary, SDCs exhibit a higher degree of variation in quality parameters; these findings indicate their large potential for breeding high-quality cultivars in south-western China.

Gluten strength is an important end-use quality factor in durum wheat [Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum (Desf.) Husn.], affecting pasta manufacture and cooking quality. The objective of this research was to determine the inheritance and heritability of gluten index in comparison with the widely used SDS-sedimentation (sodium dodecyl sulphate) technique for selection for gluten strength. Seven durum populations were grown in replicated, multi-location, multi-year field trials in Saskatchewan, Canada, during the period 1995 to 2002. Gluten index and SDS-sedimentation volume were determined on all plots after harvest. Both traits were affected by genotype, and to a lesser extent by year or location. Genotype environmental interactions were generally minor. The majority of genotypes in each population had similar relative ranking for gluten index and SDS-sedimentation volume in each environment. Both traits were highly heritable, ranging from 0.80 to 0.97, and both were complexly inherited with estimates of effective factors ranging from 3 to 21. Gluten index and SDS-sedimentation volume were highly correlated, indicating that they are measuring similar aspects of gluten strength. SDS-sedimentation volume was positively associated with protein concentration (r2 = 0.52), but gluten index was not. Therefore, gluten index would be more desirable than SDS-sedimentation volume for use in selection where there are within-trial protein concentration trends.Key words: Gluten strength, SDS-sedimentation, gluten index, heritability, inheritance

SUMMARYTwo indigenous breeds of sheep in Nigeria, the Yankasa and Uda and crosses of these with exotic breeds, were evaluated for lamb weights at birth, 3 months and 6 months of age and for adult ewe weight. The cross-bred lambs were significantly (P < 0·05) heavier than the indigenous breeds at all ages. Differences among the indigenous breeds were not significant. Mature ewe weight was 40·8 kg in the cross-bred and 36·0 and 31·1 kg in the Uda and Yankasa respectively, differences between all breeds being significant (P <0·05). Lamb productivity (lamb weight per kg of ewe metabolic body weight) estimates demonstrated that the differences between breeds were small.Least-squares estimates of effects of environmental factors on lamb performance showed that type of birth and age of dam were important for lamb weights at the three ages. Season and sex also had significant effects on birth and 6-month weights respectively. Correction factors for lamb weights were derived from least-squares estimates.The correlation coefficient between birth and 3-month weight was significant in all breeds and ranged from 0·39 to 0·55. Three-month and 6-month weights were highly correlated with estimates of correlation coefficients ranging from 0·71 to 0·74. Repeatability estimates of birth, 3·month, 6·month and ewe weights, all as traits of the ewe in the Yankasa, were 0·25, 0·21, 0·09 and 0·48, respectively.

J. Plant Sci. 91: 261–271. In this study, pasta-quality-associated characteristics of 25 durum wheat genotypes were investigated. Durum wheat genotypes consisted of 13 advanced experimental lines and 12 registered cultivars that were grown in three different locations of Turkey for 2 yr. Genotype, location, year and their interactions were found to be statistically significant in terms of all investigated quality characteristics. Mean quality parameters for the genotypes varied as follows: yellowberry kernel 1.7–6.1%, pigment content 3.67–8.31 mg kg−1, lipoxygenase (LOX) activity 12.9–27.9 EU g−1, protein content 10.8–11.8% (14% mb), gluten index (GI) 12-61, sodium dodecyl sulphate-sedimentation volume 17.3–28.7 mL, specific sedimentation volume 1.60–2.52 mL. Of the genotypes, 10 contained γ-gliadin 45 and six γ-gliadin 42 proteins. Except for Zenit, none of the registered cultivars and advanced experimental lines investigated in this study were able to meet simultaneously the requirements for high-quality pasta products; yet certain experimental lines prevailing in specific quality characteristics, such as Line-Gdem-2, Line-Gdem-12 and Line-20, may be used for further breeding purposes. The results of this study also imply that grain yield and quality should be taken collectively into consideration in wheat breeding programs.

Seed of F2 single plant selections from two crosses was evaluated using a number of small-scale quality tests.F2 quality test values were significantly correlated with farinograph and extensograph properties in the F3, but no one test was correlated with all of the physical dough measures. The Pelshenke time and the proportion of residue protein were the small-scale measures most consistently correlated with dough strength (farinograph dough breakdown and extensograph maximum resistance) in the F3 and between the F2 and F3 generations.Applications of independent culling in the F2 for each test did not alter the subsequent nature of the F3 yield distribution except for flour protein content and Zeleny volume, where there was a preferential loss of lines from the higher yielding end. This resulted from the negative correlations between flour protein content and yield, both within the F3 (r=-0.66**) and between the F2 and F3 (r= -0-44**). The negative relationship between grain yield and Zeleny volume was due to the effect of protein content on Zeleny volume.Application of quality testing regimes that estimated grain hardness, protein content and dough strength in the F2 did not adversely affect the nature of the F3 yield distribution, yet permitted up to 71% of the population to be removed because of unsatisfactory balance of quality attributes. Abstract. The penetration of plasma sheet ions into the inner magnetosphere is very important to the inner magnetospheric dynamics since plasma sheet ions are one of the major particle sources of ring current during storm times. However, the direct observations of the inner boundary of the plasma sheet are fairly rare due to the limited number of satellites in near equatorial orbits outside 6.6 RE. In this paper, we used the ion data recorded by TC-1 from 2004 to 2006 to study the distribution of inner boundary of ion plasma sheet (IBIPS) and for the first time show the observational distribution of IBIPS in the equatorial plane. The IBIPS has a dawn-dusk asymmetry, being farthest to the Earth in the 06:00 08:00 LT bin and closest to the Earth in the 18:00–20:00 LT bin. Besides, the IBIPS has also a day-night asymmetry, which may be due to the fact that the ions on the dayside are exposed more time to loss mechanisms on their drift paths. The radial distance of IBIPS decrease generally with the increase of Kp index. The mean radial distance of IBIPS is basically larger than 6.6 RE during quiet times and smaller than 6.6 RE during active times. When the strength of convection electric field increases, the inward shift of IBIPS is most significant on the night side (22:00–02:00 LT). For Kp ≤ 0+, only 16% of IBIPSs penetrate inside the geosynchronous orbit. For 2 ≤ Kp < 3+, however, 70% of IBIPSs penetrate inside the geosynchronous orbit. The IBIPS has weak correlations with the AE and Dst indexes. The average correlation coefficient between Ri and Kp is −0.58 while the correlation coefficient between Ri and AE/Dst is only −0.29/0.17. The correlation coefficients are local time dependent. Particularly, Ri and Kp are highly correlated (r=−0.72) in the night sector, meaning that the radial distance of IBIPS Ri in the night sector has the good response to the Kp index These observations indicate that Kp plays a key role in determining the position of IBIPS.

Several types of equipment have been used to predict dough behaviour during breadmaking. The complexity of requirements means that no device is able to predict all the properties, and therefore, new tests are released continuously. The Chopin Mixolab mixes the dough at different temperatures, allowing the study of dough mixing properties, weakening, gelatinization, gel stability and retrogradation in one test. The objective of this work was to study the suitability of the Mixolab to predict rheological properties and breadmaking quality of local wheats. Flour was obtained from 29 wheat samples  from different genotypes and environments. The correlation of results from traditional analyses  (test weight, protein content, sedimentation volume, wet gluten, Falling Number, Alveograph and Farinograph)  with Mixolab parameters was studied. The properties of two different bread types were compared with all these parameters. Stability and water absorption values from the Farinograph were highly correlated with the respective Mixolab parameters. It was concluded that wheat samples could be sorted by mixing properties in similar order independently of which method was used. Beyond that, gluten strength estimators obtained from these three rheological methods and the sedimentation volume test were highly correlated. Whilst the correlation of Mixolab parameters with pan loaf volume was not as high as traditional ones, Mixolab developing time, stability and C5 were the best correlated with the most important hearth bread characteristics. Studies performed by other researchers, using wheats from diverse origins, found different results. The need for empirical rheology evaluation with local wheat samples was proved.

Groundwater is the major source of municipal and private potable water supply for meeting the drinking, domestic, agricultural and industrial requirements on man around the world. The cost of analyzing water quality in the laboratory to ascertain its potability is usually high and sometimes not available. Groundwater samples were collected from fifty (50) spatially referenced bore well locations in Warri and its environs in the dry and wet seasons (November 2019 to January 2020) in the study area. The water samples were analyzed for twenty-six (26) physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters both in the field and laboratory in line with APHA standard procedures for testing water and waste water inorder to evaluate the status of potability of groundwater across Warri, Delta State Nigeria. The data analysis tool in Microsoft Excel was used to explore and study the interrelationship between some conservative parameters measured in the field (pH, EC, TDS, and DO) as independent variables and some cations, anions and heavy metals (Na, Mg, Ca, HCO3, SO4 Cl, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb) analysed in the laboratory as dependent variables. The results obtained from the parameters analysed insitu in the field which are cheap to perform and easily affordable were used to check and evaluate and the inter-relationships with some cations, anions and heavy metals. Highly correlated water quality parameters were determined by correlation coefficient (R) values obtained from correlation matrix and related by Regression equations (models). The regression models can be adopted to predict the concentration of these cations, anions and heavy metals before the rigorous laboratory analysis, to serve as a quick check for concentration of most disease-causing pollutants and to save time, money and resources, especially the near absence of AAS for analysing heavy metals in a good number of laboratories. The regression models developed in the study can be used for monitoring the water quality parameters by knowing the concentration of independent parameters obtained in the field alone. There is a relationship between variables which show that one variable actually causes changes in another variable. It was observed that multiple regression models can predict most parameters at 5% level of significance. Significantly positive correlation at 1 and 5% was found between many parameters. This technique studied and calculated the correlation coefficients between various physico-chemical parameters of drinking water and provided an excellent device for the calculation of parameter values within realistic degree of accuracy. The results proved to be easiest, useful, and rapid means for monitoring of water quality with the help of systematic calculations of correlation coefficient. It is recommended to treat groundwater prior to domestic use.

The quality of wheat is a pre-eminent factor in the criteria for commercialization of this cereal, and several parameters contribute to the evaluation of wheat quality. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the cover and the environment for wheat cultivars and the effects on the industrial quality of the grain. Furthermore, we sought to identify correlations between the parameters of industrial quality. Experiments were conducted in Londrina for 2 years, in two distinct environments (A1 and A2). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four replications. The cultivars IPR Catuara TM, BRS Gaivota, Quartzo, and CD 120 were evaluated with different forms of nitrogen management: N1, without N in coverage; N2, 60 kg ha-1 of N in the form of urea at the beginning of tillering; N3, 80 kg ha-1 of N in urea formulation (60 kg ha-1 in tillering and 20 kg ha-1 in booting); N4, 100 kg ha-1 of N in the form of urea (60 kg ha-1 in tillering and 40 kg ha-1 in booting); N5, 80 kg ha-1 of N (60 kg ha-1 of N in the form of urea at the beginning of tillering, and 20 kg ha-1 of N in the form of ammonium sulfate in booting); N6, 100 kg ha-1 of N (60 kg ha-1 of N in the form of urea at the beginning of tillering, and 40 kg ha-1 of N in the form of ammonium sulfate in booting). Further, we evaluated grain yield, protein content, sedimentation volume with sodium dodecyl sulfate, and parameters of alveograph and farinograph. Nitrogen fertilization did not influence industrial quality parameters. The stability of the mass was influenced by the isolated effects of cultivars and the environment. The interaction of cultivars and environments influenced the parameters of alveograph and water absorption of the mass. The higher the protein content, the lower the stability of the mass, independent of the cultivar.
