In the Eastern Canada Co-op Barley test, Sophie has given an average yield of grain 1% higher than Mingo and Laurier, 3% higher than Bruce and 13% higher than Conquest. In the 1979 regional trials, it has given yields comparable to those of Loyola, the most widely grown cultivar in Quebec. From 295 comparisons with check cultivars, its yield was superior (P = 95%) in 23% of the comparisons, equal in 69% and inferior in 8% of the cases. This cultivar has also given higher yields than the checks in Western Canada. It is different mainly because of its late maturity. It is, on the average, 4 days later than the checks. It is also more resistant to lodging than Loyola and Laurier. Its straw strength is inferior to that of Bruce but almost equal to that of Conquest. Its weight per 1000 grains is higher than that of Conquest or Bruce, similar to that of Loyola or Mingo, and smaller than that of Laurier. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew. Bruce is, however, more resistant to this disease. Sophie had shown more resistance to leaf rust than the checks. It is also moderately susceptible to net blotch. This feed grain barley cultivar is a joint release between Laval University and the Agriculture Canada Research Station of Ste-Foy, Quebec. Breeder seed will be maintained by Université Laval at Ste-Foy.

Iona is a two-row, spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It has high yield and good resistance to powdery mildew. Iona is well adapted to Eastern Canada and is responsive to intensive management. Kernel colour is an important marketing trait for both malting and feed barleys. Therefore a study was initiated to investigate the kernel colour of 75 Canadian barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars at three locations (Charlottetown, Ottawa and Bentley) across Canada in 1991 and 1992. Kernel colour was measured by an Instrumar Colormet Spectrocolorimeter. Kernel colour was found to be brighter at the two locations in eastern Canada (Charlottetown and Ottawa) than at the location in western Canada (Bentley). Two-row cultivars on average were more discoloured than six-row cultivars; eastern two-row were more discoloured than western two-row. Covered barleys were less discoloured than hulless barleys in five of the six environments, but covered barleys at Bentley in 1992 were more discoloured than hulless barleys. Kernel discolouration appeared to be associated with susceptibility to net blotch for six-row cultivars. More studies are needed on kernel discolouration of barley. The hard red winter wheat Tangmai 4 did not develop symptoms of infection following inoculation with powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis DC. f. sp. tritici E. Marchal) isolates from regions of western Canada and northern China. Tangmai 4 exhibited resistance to stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & Henn.) and leaf rust (P. triticina Eriks.) races from western Canada. This wheat line was resistant to individual stripe rust (P. striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Eriks.) races from the U.S. and Canada. Sequential C-banding and genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), and electrophoretic analyses of high molecular weight glutenins and gliadins demonstrated that Tangmai 4 carried a pair of T1BL·1RS wheat-rye (Secale cereale L.) translocated chromosomes. Since the genes located on T1BL·1RS are no longer effective in controlling powdery mildew and the rust diseases, Tangmai 4 must carry additional genes for resistance to these diseases, which makes it a valuable resource for the improvement of resistance in wheat against these diseases. OAC Wintri is the first winter hexaploid triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) licensed for sale in Canada. It is a tall, high-yielding cultivar with good resistance to mildew, leaf rust, and septoria. It is well-adapted to growing conditions in Ontario, Quebec and Eastern Canada. It was licensed on 15 July 1980. Breeder seed of OAC Wintri is maintained by the Crop Science Department, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario.

Massey is a new six-rowed spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with high yield and resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis), scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), leaf rust (Puccinia hordei) and it has the Jet genes for resistance to loose smut (Ustilago nuda). It is a nonmalting, mid-season cultivar well adapted to Ontario growing conditions. It was licensed in November 1978. Breeder seed of Massey will be maintained by Ottawa Research Station, Agriculture Canada.

Ellice is a two-rowed malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Winnipeg, Manitoba from a cross involving CI5791, Parkland, Betzes, Piroline, Akka, Centennial, Klages, Cambrinus and Tern. This cultivar (registration no. 2715) is earlier and has better straw strength and malting quality than Klages. It has demonstrated yield potential equal to Klages and Harrington throughout the prairie provinces. It is resistant to stem rust and powdery mildew and tolerant to net blotch and the surface borne smuts. It is best adapted to the Black Soil Zone of Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan.Key words: Malting barley, barley, Hordeum vulgare

Abstract. Barley is an important crop in Trakia region, Turkey and due to various environmental factors it can suffer some biotic stress and yield loss in the region. This research was carried out in two locations (Edirne and Tekirdağ) of Trakia region during 2013-2014 growing year. The experiment was set up with 25 advanced genotypes in completely randomized blocks with four replications at two locations. Grain yield, plant height, days to heading, leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew and relationship among these characters were investigated. According to the results, there was significant difference among genotypes for grain yield, biotic stress factors and other characters. The mean grain yield of the genotypes was 6866 kg ha-1. TEA1619-11 had the highest grain yield with 7667 kg ha-1. TEA2311-19 (7593 kg ha-1) and Harman (7593 kg ha-1) were the other highest yielding genotypes. Due to various environmental conditions, there was significant difference between locations. Mean yield in Edirne location was 7841 kg ha-1 and in Tekirdağ location it was 5891 kg ha-1. TEA1619-8 and TEA1619-9 sister lines had the shortest plant height and early genotypes had higher grain yield. Net blotch (Pyrenophora teres f. teres) is the mainly prevalent disease in Trakya region. Leaf rust and powdery mildew had negative effect and decreased grain yield. TEA1619-12, TEA1619-17, TEA2311-19 and TEA1980-25 genotypes were resistant at both locations. TEA1980-25 was an outstanding line to net blotch, leaf rust and powdery mildew. It was determined that increase of net blotch had negative effect and decreased the grain yield in the genotypes.
