Fall rye (Secale cereale L.), Russian wild ryegrass (Elymus junceus Fisch.) and Altai wild ryegrass (Elymus angustus Trin.) pastures were compared over a 4-yr period. Cows with calves were used as grazing animals for 2 yr and yearling steers were used for the other 2 additional yr. The two perennial grasses provided about twice as many grazing days as did fall rye. Average daily liveweight gains were highest for fall rye. Altai wild ryegrass produced 50% more liveweight gain per hectare than Russian wild ryegrass and nearly 100% more than fall rye.

Three hybrids, two of Hordeum jubatum L. × Secale cereale L. var. Prolific, and one of H. jubatum × H. bulbosum L., were examined cytologically. The two genomes of H. jubatum showed autosyndesis in the H. jubatum × S. cereale hybrids. It was concluded, therefore, that H. jubatum has two closely related genomes.One of the H. jubatum × S. cereale hybrids displayed weak asynapsis. The H. jubatum × H. bulbosum hybrid, on the other hand, showed strong asynapsis, although the prophase pairing was almost complete. It was concluded that the asynapsis of this latter hybrid was due to interaction of genes of the H. jubatum and the H. bulbosum genomes.The chiasma distributions of the hybrids were tested for randomness by Gaul's formula. It was found that the chiasma distributions of the H. jubatum × S. cereale hybrids followed a random pattern, whereas in the H. jubatum × H. bulbosum hybrid the distribution was disturbed by a secondary effect. Cytological observations and theoretical considerations led to the conclusion that the occurrence of pseudo ring-bivalents had disturbed the apparent chiasma distribution in the H. jubatum × H. bulbosum hybrid. A theory of the origin of pseudo bivalents and an evaluation of Gaul's formula is presented.

Le changement des habitudes alimentaires au cours de ces dernières années a abouti à l’apparition des maladies dites de civilisation, parmi elles le diabète sucré. Des approches diétothérapeutiques privilégient la consommation des produits céréaliers sous la forme la plus complète possible. Ce travail a pour but de tester l’efficacité des régimes expérimentaux préparés à base des grains complets des deux céréales, le sorgho (Sorghum bicolor L.) et le seigle (Secale cereale L.), sur la correction de l’hyperglycémie et des marqueurs du stress oxydant associés au diabète chez le rat mâle Wistar. Les résultats montrent que les rats diabétiques, soumis au régime seigle pendant quatre semaines, présentent une diminution significative de la glycémie qui atteint les 53,95 % à la fin de l’expérimentation, ce qui fait que leur taux en glycémie se rapproche de celui des normoglycémiques. Le sorgho blanc présente, d’une part, une diminution significative de la peroxydation lipidique intracellulaire et, d’autre part, une augmentation de l’activité de la glutathion peroxydase, la glutathion réductase ainsi que la vitamine C. Ces approches méthodologiques peuvent, en améliorant la connaissance de l’importance des céréales (fibres alimentaires solubles et des polyphénols) dans l’évolution du diabète, aboutir à des recommandations et à une éducation nutritionnelle du diabétique.

The study describes sulfuric acid pretreatment of straw from Secale cereale L. (rye straw) to evaluate the effect of acid concentration and treatment time on the efficiency of biofuel production. The highest ethanol yield occurred after the enzyme treatment at a dose of 15 filter paper unit (FPU) per gram of rye straw (subjected to chemical hydrolysis with 2% sulfuric acid (SA) at 121 °C for 1 h) during 120 h. Anaerobic digestion of rye straw treated with 10% SA at 121 °C during 1 h allowed to obtain 347.42 L methane/kg volatile solids (VS). Most hydrogen was released during dark fermentation of rye straw after pretreatment of 2% SA, 121 °C, 1 h and 1% SA, 121 °C, 2 h—131.99 and 134.71 L hydrogen/kg VS, respectively. If the rye straw produced in the European Union were processed into methane, hydrogen, ethanol, the annual electricity production in 2018 could reach 9.87 TWh (terawatt-hours), 1.16 TWh, and 0.60 TWh, respectively.

Long arms of rye (Secale cereale L.) chromosome 6 (6RL) carry powdery mildew resistance genes. However, these sources of resistance have not yet been successfully used in commercial wheat cultivars. The development of small segment translocation chromosomes carrying resistance may result in lines carrying the 6R chromosome becoming more commercially acceptable. However, no wheat-rye 6RL small segment translocation line with powdery mildew resistance has been reported. In this study, a wheat-rye 6RLKu minichromosome addition line with powdery mildew resistance was identified, and this minichromosome was derived from the segment between L2.5 and L2.8 of the 6RLKu chromosome arm. Following irradiation, the 6RLKu minichromosome divided into two smaller segments, named 6RLKumi200 and 6RLKumi119, and these fragments participated in the formation of wheat-rye small segment translocation chromosomes 6DS/6RLKumi200 and 6DL/6RLKumi119, respectively. The powdery mildew resistance gene was found to be located on the 6RLKumi119 segment. Sixteen 6RLKumi119-specific markers were developed, and their products were cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide BLAST searches indicated that 14 of the 16 sequences had 91–100% similarity with nine scaffolds derived from 6R chromosome of S. cereale L. Lo7. The small segment translocation chromosome 6DL/6RLKumi119 makes the practical utilization in agriculture of powdery mildew resistance gene on 6RLKu more likely. The nine scaffolds are useful for further studying the structure and function of this small segment.
