Calcium introduced into Spartan apples (Malus pumila Mill.) from calcium chloride applied as a dip after harvest was not reduced significantly by washing fruit in a commercial washer 2 wk or later after dipping. Washing fruit within 4 h of dipping significantly reduced calcium uptake by the fruit. The incidence of breakdown was related to the final calcium concentration in the fruit. Calcium chloride treatment significantly reduced decay and loss of firmness in storage.
