Daily and seasonal evapotranspiration (ET) from irrigated plots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were measured during a 3-yr period. All plots were treated alike but each was irrigated individually when soil tension at a depth of 30 cm reached 400 mbars. Seasonal ET differed among years and was less for barley than for wheat and oats. Daily ET differed slightly among years but not significantly among crops. Oats tended to produce the most grain and, on the basis of grain production, to use water most efficiently. On the basis of stage of maturity, the three crops can be considered alike for irrigation scheduling purposes.
