Samples of individual species of forages from two locations, one with a high and one with a low incidence of urolithiasis, were collected intermittently during an 8-year period and analyzed for protein, sand, and silica at up to five stages of growth. The grasses and sedges from both locations were higher in silica than the forbs and shrubs but the difference between locations was not significant. The effect of other factors on urolithiasis is discussed, such as the forb–shrub to grass–sedge ratio, the proportion of each consumed by cattle, the availability of water, and the amount of water actually consumed by cattle in the two areas.

SummaryThe size, total protein, fibrinogen and 5-HT content were evaluated in density subpopulations of human and canine platelets fractionated in linear arabinogalactan gradients. The methodology was assessed to ascertain that platelet separation was by density and to discard artifactual changes and platelet release during the procedure. EDTA or PGEi increased the size of human PRP-platelets, but not of dog platelets. In humans, high density (HD) platelets were 1.26 times larger and contained 1.88 times more fibrinogen, 2.23 times more 5-HT and 1.37 times more protein than low density (LD) platelets; in dogs, these density cohorts did not differ in protein content, but LD platelets were 1.29 times larger and had 1.33 times more fibrinogen and 5-HT than HD platelets. These findings suggest that cell density is mostly dependent on the protein content per unit volume of platelets (and not on dense bodies). The differences in fibrinogen and 5-HT content between HD and LD cohorts in humans and dogs may be related to platelet age. The difference in volume between HD and LD platelets in dogs is of uncertain interpretation.

AbstractThe extreme habitats of dry grasslands are suitable for investigations of the response of vegetation to local climate changes. The impact of weather variability on the dynamics of a plant community in a dry grassland was studied. Correlations were found between different functional groups of species and individual species and weather variability. During a 9-year study in five nature reserves in Prague (Czech Republic), the following responses of dry grassland vegetation to weather conditions were observed: (i) wetter conditions, especially in the winter, affected the dominance and species richness of perennial grass species and the decline of rosette plants; (ii) the year-to-year higher temperatures in the winter produced a decline in the dominance of short graminoids and creeping forbs; (iii) spring drought adversely impacted the overall abundance, especially the abundance of dicotyledonous species, and the species richness. However, these relationships may be manifested in different ways in different locations, and in some cases the vegetation of different locations may respond to weather conditions in opposite manners.

BackgroundA solitary fibrous tumor of the chest (SFTC) is a subtype of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) with a low incidence rate. The purpose of this study is to analyze the diagnosis and treatment of SFTC and the difference between benign and malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) to improve the understanding of this rare disease.MethodsA retrospective analysis of fifty patients with SFTC (33 cases in the pleura and 17 in the lung) was performed. Clinical and imaging characteristics, pathological features, and treatment follow-up outcomes were analyzed.ResultsThe common symptoms of the 50 patients included a cough, expectoration, chest tightness, fever, and chest pain. Space occupying lesions were found via plain computed tomography (CT) and enhanced CT was used for enhancement of the tumors. It was also found that 18 cases had necrosis, and 5 cases had calcification. The histopathology results showed that frequent nuclear division, obvious morphological variation, necrosis, and the high expression of Ki-67 cells are markers of malignant SFTC. There were significant differences in age, chest tightness, necrotic foci in CT, and expression of Ki-67 between the benign and malignant SFTP cases. All the patients who received treatment were given an excellent prognosis.ConclusionA combination of enhanced CT, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry can be used for the accurate diagnosis of SFTC. Advanced age, chest tightness, necrotic foci in CT, and a high Ki-67 index were more likely to be malignant SFTP. Operation and radiofrequency ablation can provide favorable outcomes for both benign and malignant SFTC.

Purulent otorrhea is the most common complication of tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion. It may occur in the postoperative period or at any time during the sojourn of the tube. The efficacy of topical antimicrobial prophylaxis against purulent postoperative otorrhea (PPO) has been examined in 5 prospective, randomized studies; all demonstrated a reduction in PPO from topical antimicrobial prophylaxis, but in only 1 study was the difference statistically significant. Because the 5 studies used 2 different experimental designs — By-patient, and by-ear — a single meta-analysis could not be done. However, the by-patient studies met the criteria for meta-analysis, which demonstrated a combined odds ratio of 0.12 (95% confidence interval 0.04 to 0.37, p = .0002). This represents an 85% reduction in otorrhea, which is judged to be clinically as well as statistically significant. We conclude from the available evidence that prophylactic use of topical antimicrobial agents following TT insertion consistently reduces the rate of PPO. However, the low incidence of PPO and the heterogeneity of the published studies prevent making a final judgment for or against the continued use of these agents. Therefore, given that these potentially ototoxic agents are frequently administered to prevent postoperative otorrhea, further study of this subject is warranted. In the meantime, we recommend judicious use of these agents following TT insertion in those cases at higher risk for PPO, namely those with mucoid or purulent effusion.

There are 171 species of robber flies recorded for Wyoming, USA, including three newly described species (Cyrtopogon hollandi sp. nov., C. martini sp. nov., and Stenopogon graminis sp. nov.) in this paper, in 10 of the 14 recognized subfamilies. The largest numbers of species belong to the Asilinae (61) followed by Brachyrhopalinae (35), Laphriinae (23), Stenopogoninae (19), Dasypogoninae (9), Stichopogoninae (9), Leptogastrinae (8), Dioctriinae (3), Willistonininae (3), and Trigonomiminae (1). The most species (136) occur in one or more of the shrub/grassland vegetation types, with fewer species occurring in the grassland vegetation types (130), the forest (78 species) and in the shrub (24 species) vegetation types. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species with brief species descriptions are provided; the ecology and ethology of individual species are discussed.

Idiosepius biserialis and Idiosepius thailandicus have been previously described as separate species although the difference in morphological characters is only the arrangement of pegs in tentacular-club suckers. The former species inhabits sea grass beds in the Andaman Sea of Thailand. The latter species inhabits mangroves in the eastern Gulf of Thailand. The present study of reproductive behaviour, mating, and spawning of the two species in captivity demonstrated that they are closely related. Copulation was performed using tentacles by the male for fixation of spermatophores at the buccal region of the female. Behavioural patterns were distinguished based on the hovering and adhering positions of each sex. Cross-mating between two species was initiated and observed, yielding fertilized eggs which developed to the organogenesis stage. Reproductive behaviour of crossed pairs was similar to those of individual species. This study revealed that the two ‘species’ are not reproductively isolated.

This study was performed to analyze the difference between the meat properties classified into 5 ranges depending on Berkshire meat quality traits. Post-mortem pH24hr was positively correlated with water holding capacity, but negatively correlated with meat color, protein content, drip loss, and cooking loss. Berkshire gilt was discovered by higher population of RFN (reddish pink, firm, non-exudative), a normal meat class when compared to barrow, whereas DFD (dark, firm, and dry) was not detected and PSE (pale, soft and floppy, exudative) and RSE (reddish pink, soft and floppy, exudative) were found by a low number of individuals. It was assumed that Berkshire gilt is less susceptible to stress when compared with barrow. Therefore, from the results of this study, we suggest that Berkshire gilt is high possibility for production of good meat due to a forming ability for better meat quality than that of Berkshire barrow.

An experiment was set up to determine the effect of time and rate of nitrogen fertilization and stage of growth at first cut on yield and digestibility of dry matter and protein content of two timothy (Phleum pratense L.) cultivars, at each of two cuts, No difference in yield or chemical composition was found between cultivars. Highest yields and crude protein contents were measured at rates of nitrogen fertilizer of 112 and 224 kg/ha. Higher yield and protein content were obtained with NH4NO3 applied totally or in split applications in the spring than with urea in the fall. Dry matter digestibility (DDM) was not affected by nitrogen at rates of 56, 112 and 224 kg/ha. First cut was taken at two different stages of growth, and the second cut was taken on the same day in all the plots. At anthesis, yields were higher than at the head stage but DDM and protein content were lower. The opposite was found at the second cut. Except in 1973, total dry matter yield was not affected by the stage of growth at first cut.

In this paper are brought together a number of data concerning the ratio of the amount of leaf to stem in the lucerne crop, at different stages of growth, and the separate composition of the leafy and stemmy fractions.It is shown that the proportion of leaf falls off as the crop advances in maturity, and that the rate of decrease of leafiness is greater before budding than during the period from the beginning of budding to early flower. The changes in the leaf-stem ratio largely account for the fall in protein content, the rise in fibre content and the running-off in digestibility and feeding value that take place as the crop passes through the successive stages of growth up to flowering.
