Bravo, a medium maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was released in 2012 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba. Developed from the Flanders/Pacific made in 1995, AAC Bravo was evaluated in the Flax Cooperative Trials (2008–2010) before being registered in 2012. AAC Bravo's desirable combination of agronomic traits, particularly its significantly large seed size as compared with other commercially available cultivars, seed quality and disease resistance, should make it a useful cultivar for producers and the flax industry.

Developed from the cross M4684/FP1043 made in 1997, Shape was evaluated in the Flax Cooperative Trials in (2004–2006) before being registered in 2007. Shape's desirable combination of agronomic traits and seed quality, particularly its significantly improved oil and protein content, oil quality profile and disease resistance, should make it a useful and unique cultivar for producers and the flax industry.

Developed from the cross AC Watson/FP1043 made in 1995, Prairie Thunder was evaluated in the Flax Cooperative Trials (2002–2004) before being registered in 2006. Prairie Thunder's desirable combination of improved agronomic traits, seed quality and superior wilt (Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. f. sp. lini (Bolley) Snyder & Hansen) resistance should make this cultivar useful for producers and the flax industry.

Developed from a cross of AC Watson/CI3395 made in 1996, Prairie Grande was evaluated in the Flax Cooperative Trials in (2003–2005) before being registered in 2007. Prairie Grande's desirable combination of significantly higher yield with significantly earlier maturity (3.1 d earlier than Flanders), along with seed quality similar to Flanders, but with higher protein content in the meal and a good disease resistance package, should make it a useful cultivar for producers in the northern prairies of Canada and the flax industry.

Plant organs, such as seeds, are primary sources of food for both humans and animals. Seed size is one of the major agronomic traits that have been selected in crop plants during their domestication. Legume seeds are a major source of dietary proteins and oils. Here, we report a conserved role for the BIG SEEDS1 (BS1) gene in the control of seed size and weight in the model legume Medicago truncatula and the grain legume soybean (Glycine max). BS1 encodes a plant-specific transcription regulator and plays a key role in the control of the size of plant organs, including seeds, seed pods, and leaves, through a regulatory module that targets primary cell proliferation. Importantly, down-regulation of BS1 orthologs in soybean by an artificial microRNA significantly increased soybean seed size, weight, and amino acid content. Our results provide a strategy for the increase in yield and seed quality in legumes.

Prairie Blue, a medium- late maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), was released in 2003 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba. This cultivar has high oil content, high oil quality, small seed size, very good lodging resistance and high yield in all soil zones of the prairies. It is immune to current North American races of rust [Melampsora lini (Ehrenb.) Desmaz], and moderately resistant to wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. f. sp. lini (Bolley) Snyder & Hansen. Plant Sci. 93: 1249–1255. Three cultivars of fibre flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), Viking, Argos and Ariane, were used to study the effect on various agronomic traits of diurnal temperature ranges (DIF) and seasonal temperature patterns (STP) applied throughout the crop growth period. Diurnal temperature ranges were set at 5, 10 and 15°C with the same daily mean temperature and accumulated growing degree days (GDDa), under a parabolic STP. Seasonal temperature patterns were set following parabolic, anti-parabolic and quasi-horizontal configurations with DIF set at 10°C. The results showed that DIF or cultivar had a significant influence on the biomass, plant height (PH), stem diameter (SD), length of technical stem (LTS), weight of technical stem (WTS), fibre weight (FW), fibre content (FC) and seed weight per pot (SWp). Seasonal temperature pattern also had a significant influence on these traits except for WTS and FW. Significant interactions were observed between DIF and cultivar, affecting all traits with the exception of FW, and between STP and cultivar, affecting biomass, PH, SD and WTS. Diurnal temperature range set at 10°C was optimal for biomass, PH, SD, LTS, WTS, and FW, while DIF set at 5°C benefited FC and SWp. Among the different STP configurations, anti-parabolic pattern was optimal for biomass, PH, SD, LTS and FC, and the quasi-horizontal pattern best fit SWp. In conclusion, the combination of DIF set at 10°C and anti-parabollic STP provided the most favorable temperature conditions for fibre flax growth, which is the situation with winter flax production in Yunnan, China.

Hanley, a medium maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was released in 2001 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba. This cultivar has medium oil content, very high oil quality, medium seed size, very good lodging resistance, and high yield when seeded in all soil zones of the prairies.
