Leaves per tiller produced and displayed following June, July, or August defoliation was determined for Festuca hallii. Two to three leaves per tiller were produced and displayed annually, and leaves per tiller did not vary among defoliation treatments. June defoliation reduced green leaves per tiller; leaf senescence increased after June and July defoliation.

With development of water stress during grain filling, sorghum crops lose green leaves, and nitrogen (N) is remobilised from the leaves to grain. Supplementary N application just before anthesis may reduce leaf senescence, contributing to dry matter production during grain filling and, hence, grain yield. This hypothesis was tested using 2 sorghum hybrids which were known to differ in capacity for osmotic adjustment and the ability to retain green leaves under water stress, in a rainout shelter experiment in south-east Queensland. When N was applied at depth (>70 cm) where water was available, all N applied was apparently taken up by the plants, resulting in reduced leaf senescence, particularly for leaves in the middle layer. Remobilisation of N from leaf to grain during grain filling was reduced by the supplementary N application. Both stem and leaf were the source of remobilised N which contributed about 65% of the total grain N without supplementary N application, this being reduced to about 30% with N application The hybrid with known high osmotic adjustment had greater total above-ground dry matter, particularly stem dry matter, at anthesis than the other, providing more material for translocation to fill grains. It also maintained greater leaf area during early stages of grain filling. This hybrid produced significantly higher yield (465 v. 412 g/m2) only when supplementary N was applied. Without supplementary N application, their yields were similar at about 350 g/m2. It is concluded that provided N is taken up by the sorghum plants, late N application is effective in increasing grain yield under water-limiting conditions. Cultivars, however, differed in their responses to the application.

Background: In light of the few reports from intertropical latitudes and their conflicting results, we aimed to replicate and update the investigation of seasonal patterns of suicide occurrences in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: Data relating to male and female suicides were extracted from the Mortality Information Enhancement Program (PRO-AIM), the official health statistics of the municipality of São Paulo. Seasonality was assessed by studying distribution of suicides over time using cosinor analyses. Results: There were 6,916 registered suicides (76.7% men), with an average of 39.0 ± 7.0 observed suicides per month. For the total sample and for both sexes, cosinor analysis estimated a significant seasonal pattern. For the total sample and for males suicide peaked in November (late spring) with a trough in May–June (late autumn). For females, the estimated peak occurred in January, and the trough in June–July. Conclusions: A seasonal pattern of suicides was found for both males and females, peaking in spring/summer and dipping in fall/winter. The scarcity of reports from intertropical latitudes warrants promoting more studies in this area.

This study provides the analysis of drought conditions of vegetation period in 1982-2014 year in two Lithuanian regions: Kaunas and Telšiai. To identify drought conditions the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was applied. SPI was calculated using the long-term precipitation record of 1982–2014 with in-situ meteorological data. Calculation step of SPI was taken 1 month considering only vegetation period (May, June, July, August, September). The purpose of investigation was to evaluate the humidity/aridity of vegetation period and find out the probability of droughts occurrence under Lithuanian climatic conditions. It was found out that according SPI results droughts occurred in 14.5 % of all months in Kaunas region and in 15.8 % in Telšiai region. Wet periods in Kaunas region occurred in 15.8 %, and in Telšiai region occurrence of wet periods was – 18.8 % from all evaluated months. According SPI evaluation near normal were 69.7 % of total months during period of investigation in Kaunas and respectively – 65.5 % in Telšiai. The probability for extremely dry period under Lithuania climatic conditions are pretty low – 3.0 % in middle Lithuania and 2.4 % in western part of Lithuania.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to compare the quality of clutches and reproduction results of two groups of Roman snails (Helix pomatia) from the same local population, laying eggs simultaneously in semi-natural farm conditions and in a natural habitat. The study material were Roman snails aged 2 or more years which had entered the third phenological season of their life and thus the first season of sexual maturity. Observations were conducted at an earthen enclosure in a greenhouse belonging to the experimental farm for edible snails at the National Research Institute of Animal Reproduction in Balice near Kraków (Poland) as well as at a site where a local population naturally occurs in the uncultivated park surrounding the Radziwiłł Palace. In the June-July season, differences among such parameters as weight of clutch, number of eggs in clutch, mean egg weight, and hatchling percentage when compared to the total number of eggs in the clutch were compared. It was determined that clutches of eggs from the natural population laid in the greenhouse were of lesser weight (P<0.01), contained fewer eggs (P<0.05), and the mean weight of individual eggs was less (P<0.05) than in clutches laid simultaneously in a natural habitat. Both in the greenhouse and the natural habitat, in the first phase of laying eggs (June) the weight of the clutch and number of eggs its contained were greater than in the second phase (July). However, only for snails laying eggs in the greenhouse were these differences statistically significant (P<0.05) and highly significant (P<0.01), respectively. Statistically significant differences were not observed in hatchling percentage between eggs laid in the greenhouse and the natural habitat. The lower number of eggs laid in the farmed conditions of the greenhouse was successfully compensated for by the absence of mass destruction by rodents which occurred in the natural habitat.
