Brevis spring triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack) is well adapted to the Canadian prairies with high grain yield in each of the soil zones. Brevis has reduced height compared with the check cultivars and excellent lodging resistance. Brevis matures in a similar number of days as Pronghorn and AC Certa and about 3d later than AC Ultima. It combines large heavy seed with test weight equal to that of AC Certa, the best check cultivar. Brevis is resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust, stem rust and common bunt. Its reaction to Fusarium head blight is moderately susceptible to moderately resistant.

Bumper matures in a similar number of days as the check cultivars. It combines large heavy seed with test weight equal to the best cultivar AC Certa. Bumper is resistant to the prevalent races of leaf and stem rust and common bunt. Its reaction to Fusarium head blight is moderately resistant.

Sunray, a spring triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack) cultivar, is adapted to the Canadian prairies and represents an improvement in ergot resistance for Canadian triticale. Sunray is resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust, stem rust, common bunt and common root rot and is moderately resistant to grain sprouting. Sunray is short-statured with excellent lodging resistance and grain yield; grain volume test weight and seed mass were similar to the check cultivars. Sunray matures 2 d earlier than Pronghorn and AC Certa, and similar to AC Ultima. Sunray is eligible for the grades of Canada Triticale.

AAC Redstar is an early maturing, high yielding hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar that is well adapted to the northern Canadian Prairies and eligible for grades of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat. Over three years (2016-2018) of testing in the Parkland Wheat Cooperative registration trials, AAC Redstar was 11% higher yielding than AC Splendor, 6% higher than Parata, and 4% higher than Glenn and Carberry. AAC Redstar matured 3 days earlier than Glenn, 2 days earlier than Carberry and had similar maturity to Parata. AAC Redstar was shorter than all checks except Carberry and had better lodging resistance compared to all the check cultivars in the registration trial. The test weight and thousand kernel weight of AAC Redstar were similar to Carberry. The grain protein concentration of AAC Redstar was 0.2% lower than Carberry. AAC Redstar was rated moderately resistant to Fusarium head blight, leaf rust, stripe rust and common bunt. AAC Redstar had resistant reactions to loose smut, and stem rust. AAC Redstar was registered under the CWRS market class.

J. Plant Sci. 94: 1297–1302. Peace is a hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) adapted to the shorter-season wheat-growing regions of the Canadian prairies. Peace was evaluated in the Parkland Wheat Cooperative Test in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Peace exhibited grain yield similar to the check cultivars over 2 yr (1999–2000; Neepawa and Roblin) and over 3 yr (1999–2001; AC Barrie and AC Splendor) Peace matured a day earlier than AC Barrie but was 2 d later than AC Splendor over 3 yr of testing (1999–2001) and was a day later than Neepawa and Roblin over 2 yr of testing (1999–2000). Peace had test weight similar to the check cultivars. Peace was moderately resistant to leaf rust and loose smut and resistant to stem rust including the highly virulent Ug99 race of stem rust and common bunt. Peace was moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight. Peace meets the end-use quality specifications of the Canada Western Red Spring wheat class.

AC Alta, a spring triticale cultivar (× Triticosecale Wittmack) was developed at the Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre, Research Branch, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. AC Alta is a high-yielding, large kernelled, lodging resistant cultivar of triticale which is widely adapted to the Prairie Provinces. AC Alta is very resistant to leaf and stem rust, resistant to common bunt and moderately resistant to common root rot. AC Alta will be distributed by Progressive Seeds Limited. AC Ultima, a spring triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), is widely adapted to the Canadian Prairies. AC Ultima represents an improvement in Hagberg Falling Number, which is usually associated with improved harvest-time sprouting resistance. AC Ultima expressed high grain yield, early maturity, heavy kernels and excellent lodging resistance compared to the check cultivars. AC Ultima is very resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust, stem rust, and common bunt and resistant to common root rot. AC Ultima is eligible for the grades of Canada Triticale. CDC Covert durum wheat is adapted to the durum production area of the Canadian prairies. This conventional height durum wheat cultivar combines high grain yield with acceptable time to maturity, disease resistance, test weight, and end-use suitability. CDC Covert is resistant to prevalent races of leaf and stem rust, has excellent common bunt resistance, and demonstrated end-use quality suitable for the Canada Western Amber Durum class.

Snowstar is a hard white spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that represents an improvement in end-use quality specifications of the Canada Western Hard White Spring wheat class compared with Snowbird. Snowstar was evaluated in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative Test in 2003, and the Hard White Wheat Cooperative Test in 2004 and 2005. Snowstar appears best adapted to the longer season wheat-growing areas of the Canadian prairies. Snowstar was generally lower yielding than the check cultivars. However, in Zone 1 (Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan), Snowstar had 2% higher grain yield than CDC Teal (2003–2005) and 1.5% more than Snowhite475 (2004–2005). In 2003 and 2005 (Zone 1), Snowstar had grain yield approximately 3% more than Snowbird (data not shown). Snowstar was resistant or moderately resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust and stem rust. Snowstar was susceptible to common bunt and loose smut. Snowstar was generally more resistant to Fusarium head blight than the check cultivars. Snowstar had higher test weight, flour yield and whiter flour as well as stronger dough compared with Snowbird.

AAC Innova is a high-yielding spring wheat cultivar eligible for the Canada Western General Purpose (CWGP) wheat class. Based on 32 site-years of testing over 3 yr in the General Purpose Wheat Cooperative Registration trial (2008–2010), AAC Innova yielded 4% higher than AC Andrew and was 1 d later in maturity. Compared with AC Andrew, AAC Innova had similar test weight and the soft white kernels were slightly larger. AAC Innova was resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust and was resistant to moderately resistant to stem rust and leaf spotting diseases. It was susceptible to common bunt, loose smut and Fusarium head blight.

Glencross is a hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) adapted to the wheat-growing regions of the Canadian Prairies, particularly where orange blossom wheat midge is a production constraint. Glencross was evaluated in the High Yielding Red Wheat Cooperative Test in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Glencross had grain yield similar to the Canada Western Extra Strong (CWES) checks, Glenlea and CDC Rama, as well as the Canada Western Red Spring check, Superb; however, Glencross was significantly (P < 0.05) earlier maturing than all checks by 3 (Superb) to 4 (Glenlea and CDC Rama) days. Glencross had plant height and lodging scores similar to the CWES checks, Glenlea and CDC Rama, but was significantly taller and had significantly higher lodging scores compared with the CWRS check, Superb. Glencross was moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to leaf rust but was highly resistant to stem rust and loose smut. Glencross showed an intermediate reaction to common bunt and was similar to the susceptible checks for Fusarium head blight. Glencross is the first CWES cultivar with resistance to the orange blossom wheat midge (Setodiplosis mosellana Géhin). Glencross demonstrated end-use quality suitable for all grades of the Canada Western Extra Strong wheat class.
