Lu is an early-maturing, high-yielding oat with good lodging resistance. Lu has the best combination of high yield and early maturity of contemporary cultivars developed and released in western Canada. Lu does not carry genetic resistance to the diseases most commonly found in the eastern prairies and, therefore, its production is limited to Alberta and western Saskatchewan. Lu has high test weight, 1000-kernel weight, protein content and milling yield similar to or better than the check cultivars, which makes it suitable for milling or feed end uses. Lu was supported for registration at the Prairie Regional Recommending Committee for Grains meeting in February 2001.Key words: Oat, Avena sativa L., cultivar description, high yielding early maturing oat

Codac is a six-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) bred at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan and registered by the Crop Science Department, University of Guelph for Eastern Canada. It was produced from a cross of Diamond/Duke and has shown adaptation to Eastern Canada. It has been high yielding, early maturing and has medium height straw. It has good resistance to scald, leaf rust, stem rust and the smuts, but is susceptible to powdery mildew. CDC Arras is a medium-early-maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) developed at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This cultivar has medium oil content, good oil quality, large seed size, fair lodging resistance and high yield when seeded early in the Black and the Brown Soil zones of the prairies. It is immune to North American races of rust caused by Melampsora lini and moderately resistant to wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini. AC Juniper is an early maturing oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivar with high grain yield and good lodging resistance. It has a higher kernel weight, a higher percentage of plump kernels, and a lower percentage of thin kernels than Jasper. Its hull content is significantly lower than Cascade, similar to Jasper and Dumont, and higher than Derby. AC Juniper is well adapted to Alberta and the rust-free areas of western Saskatchewan. AAC Redstar is an early maturing, high yielding hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar that is well adapted to the northern Canadian Prairies and eligible for grades of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat. Over three years (2016-2018) of testing in the Parkland Wheat Cooperative registration trials, AAC Redstar was 11% higher yielding than AC Splendor, 6% higher than Parata, and 4% higher than Glenn and Carberry. AAC Redstar matured 3 days earlier than Glenn, 2 days earlier than Carberry and had similar maturity to Parata. AAC Redstar was shorter than all checks except Carberry and had better lodging resistance compared to all the check cultivars in the registration trial. The test weight and thousand kernel weight of AAC Redstar were similar to Carberry. The grain protein concentration of AAC Redstar was 0.2% lower than Carberry. AAC Redstar was rated moderately resistant to Fusarium head blight, leaf rust, stripe rust and common bunt. AAC Redstar had resistant reactions to loose smut, and stem rust. AAC Redstar was registered under the CWRS market class.

AC Alma is a six-row, spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar developed by the Eastern Canada Barley Breeding Group, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. A recently developed modified milling flow for a three-stand Allis-Chalmers laboratory mill that gives a semolina yield and semolina granulation similar to that of Canadian commercial mills was used to study the relationship between durum wheat test weight, 1000-kernel weight, protein content and semolina milling yield for a series of 174 durum wheat samples. All correlations except the correlation between protein content and 1000-kernel weight were significant. Maximum milling yield was obtained for samples possessing high test weight and high 1000-kernel weight. Increased protein content resulted in a tendency to lower milling yield. For a series of hand-picked samples it was found that as starchy kernel content increased, milling yield was not affected but the proportion of flour increased. Protein content and yellow pigment content decreased with increased starchy kernel content.
