THE ACCUMULATIVE EFFECT OF FINNSHEEP BREEDING IN CROSSBREEDING SCHEMES: REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE

Reproductive performance and body weight were studied on 361 ewes, representing Finnsheep (F), DLS (a population of 1/2 Dorset, 1/4 Leicester, 1/4 Suffolk) and seven combinations ranging from 1/8 to 7/8 Finnsheep breeding. Conception rate in yearlings was 61.5% for DLS compared to 89.0% for F with the crosses being intermediate. Conception rate in older ewes was similar in the different genetic groups (avg. 94%). Ovulation rate and litter size at birth of DLS ewes were 1.72 and 1.44 lambs, which was less than half those of F ewes (3.51 and 2.86 lambs, respectively). Both traits increased progressively with an increase in F breeding in crosses and with advances in age. DLS ewes weaned 1.22 lambs compared to 2.03 lambs for F ewes and 1.84 lambs for 4/8 F ewes. The heaviest litters at weaning (31.7 kg) were raised by 4/8 F ewes, followed by 7/8 F (30.8 kg) while those raised by DLS ewes weighed 23.0 kg and F ewes 29.1 kg. Percentage of ova lost per ewe mated averaged 24% and ranged between 18% (DLS and 1/8 F) and 29% (6/8 F). About 3.6% of lambs were born dead and a further 13.8% died before weaning. Preweaning mortality rate was highest in F (22.9%) and lowest in 3/8 F (9.4%). Average kilograms of lambs weaned per ewe exposed was highest in 4/8 F (27.6 kg) followed by F (26.0 kg), whereas that of DLS was the lowest at 18.1 kg. The 4/8 F cross showed 25% heterosis in kg of lambs weaned per ewe exposed and 52.5% increase over DLS. Significant positive linear regressions were calculated for ovulation rate, litter size and preweaning mortality rate on proportion of Finnsheep breeding in crosses. The relation was quadratic for percent ova lost and lamb mortality at weaning. Yearling DLS females weighted 36 kg compared to 44 kg for F yearlings. However, at 5 yr of age DLS ewes weighed 62 kg, 5 kg heavier than F ewes. The heaviest ewes at all ages were the 4/8 F (45 kg at 1 yr, 65 kg at 5 yr). Eighteen mature nulliparous rabbit does with initial body weight between 1600g-2500g were used to evaluate the effect of body weight at first mating on reproductive performance of rabbit does. These rabbits were assigned into three treatments, with T1, T2 and T3 weighing (1600-1900), (1901-2200) and (2201-2500) respectively. The study lasted for 5weeks. The does were mated with buck at ratio 1:3. The reproductive parameters evaluated were number of does that kindled, litter size at birth, breeding efficiency, litter size at weaning, pre-weaning loss. All data collected were subjected to descriptive statistical representation. The highest number of kindled does was 5 in T2 and T3; T1 had the lowest number (3). Breeding efficiency of 83.33% was recorded in T1 and T2 while T3 had 50.00%. T3 had highest average birth weight (49.51g) and T2 had the least (41.51g); litter size at birth and weaning ranged from 18 -28kits and 15-24kits, respectively. T2 does recorded highest value in both parameters, T3 does recorded same value (28kits) for litter size at birth. Highest pre-weaning loss of 7kits was recorded from does in T3 while T1 and T2 recorded 4kits. It was therefore concluded that does with weight range 1901g – 2200g had better reproductive performance with highest breeding efficiency and lower pre-weaning loss.

ABSTRACTThe reproductive performance of does of New Zealand White (N) and Californian (C) strains of rabbit was compared with that of the two reciprocal crosses, C × N and N × C (sire × dam). Both types of crossbred doe showed a reproductive performance superior to the purebred strains, having both a higher conception rate and mean litter size at birth. C × N, N × C, N and C does reared on average 6·6, 7·4, 5·0 and 4·9 pups to weaning age respectively. Expressed in terms of an estimated annual production of weanlings the N × C does produced nearly twice as many progeny to 4 weeks of age as the purebreds N and C (37 pups cf. 21 and 19 pups respectively). Total losses prior to weaning were approximately 25% in all breeds, largely from stillbirths, and subsequent chilling and/or starvation in the nest (36% and 38% of diagnosed deaths respectively). Other contributory factors are discussed.

SummaryFemale reproductive performance is reported in mice selected for ten generations for one of three criteria: either appetite (A), fat percentage (F) or total lean mass (P). For each criterion lines were selected for high (H) or low (L) performance, with contemporary unselected controls (C). In the A and P lines, litter size changed in the direction of the selected criterion, the changes being larger and more rapidly established in the A than in the P lines. At generation 10, the differences in litter size between high and low lines were 2·6 live young born in the A lines, and 1·0 live young born in the P lines. The differences in 6-week weight between the high and low lines were 3·5 g in the A lines, 6·5 g in the P lines. Changes in ovulation rate were the primary reason for changes in litter size, the differences between the high and low lines being 3·8 corpora lutea for the A lines, and 3·1 corpora lutea for the P lines. Fitting body weight at mating as a covariate within lines in the analysis of ovulation rate and live foetus number removed the differences between the high and low selected P lines, but not those in the A lines. The high and low selected A and P lines did not differ in prenatal survival. There were no consistent differences in litter size, ovulation rate or pre-natal survival in the F lines.

Ovulation and lambing records of 214 ewes from nine genetic groups varying in ovulation rate (OR) from 1.8 to 3.2 corpora lutea (CL) and number of lambs born (LB) from 1.2 to 2.1 were analyzed to study the relation between OR, LB, ova loss (OL) and their repeatabilities. The nine genetic groups were DLS, Finnsheep (F) and seven crosses from these two breeds ranging from 1/8 to 7/8 Finnsheep breeding. Intrayear repeatability of OR averaged 0.59 for all genetic groups combined. It ranged from −0.20 for DLS to 0.93 for 5/8 F. Interyear repeatability averaged 0.38 and ranged from 0 for DLS to 0.54 for 3/8 F. OR showed a linear increase (b = 0.22 ± 0.02) with increase in Finnsheep breeding whereas repeatabilities showed a significant quadratic relationship. Repeatability of OR was more associated with variability than with mean OR. Repeatability of OR for ewes which had 1, 2, 3 or 4 CL at first record and averaged 2.3 ± 0.5,2.5 ± 0.7,3.4 ± 1.0 and 3.4 ± 1.3 CL at the following two records was, −0.09, 0.33, 0.42 and 0.42, respectively. Lambs born increased with the increase in Finnsheep breeding from 1.2 for DLS to 2.1 for Finnsheep. Ova loss averaged 35% and was fairly constant in the different genetic groups. Repeatabilities for LB and OL for each genetic group were generally small and mostly nonsignificantly different from zero. For the genetic groups combined the estimates were 0.15 and 0.14 for LB and OL, respectively. The correlation between OR and LB (0.25) was lower than that between OR and OL (0.58) and LB and EM (−0.62). ABSTRACTFour groups of does (16 per group) were remated either 1, 7, 14 or 21 days after parturition over a 1-year production cycle. Doe mortality rate was independent of treatment and overall was 0·27. The remating interval after parturition had no effect on conception rate, which was high on all treatments (0·86 to 0·93). The high overall conception rate resulted in more litters being born as the parturition to remating interval decreased. Expressed on a common 365-day experimental period the number of litters per doe was 8·9, 8·5, 7·8 and 6·7 (average s.e. of difference 0·33) for treatments 1, 7, 14 and 21 respectively. Litter size was not significantly affected by treatment and consequently the number of pups born per doe per year increased as remating interval decreased: 75·0, 73·4, 67·4 and 591 respectively. Pup mortality rate at birth and subsequently was high (0·42) on all treatments and the number of pups weaned per doe per year for treatments 1, 7, 14 and 21 was 48·3, 43·5, 40·0 and 33·3 respectively. Pup birth weight, 21-day litter weight and weaning (25-day) weight were all unaffected by treatment, as was doe body-weight change.

Reproductive performance of Booroola × Finnish Landrace (BFL, n = 19) and Booroola × Suffolk (BS, n = 18) ewe lambs heterozygous for the F gene were compared to Finnish Landrace (FL, n = 14) and Suffolk (S, n = 26) purebred controls. FL lambs reached puberty earlier (211.3 d, P < 0.001) than the other genetic groups (237.8, 233.0 and 232.9 d for S, BS and BFL, respectively) whereas weight at puberty was lower (P < 0.001) for BFL, FL and BS (36.8, 36.7 and 47.0 kg, respectively) than for S (61.1 kg). About 95% of BFL and BS ewe lambs had at least one record of three ovulations or more over the first three estruses, including puberty. Mean ovulation rates at breeding (second estrus after puberty) to a Hampshire (H) ram were 3.8, 3.3, 2.2 and 1.7 for BFL, BS, FL and S, respectively (BFL and BS vs. FL and S, P < 0.001). The corresponding litter sizes at birth were 2.5, 2.1, 1.6 and 1.3 (BFL and BS vs. FL and S, P < 0.001) which reflected a higher embryonic loss in the Booroola crosses. Percentage ova loss ranged between 32.8% (BFL) and 12.8% (S) and was related to the level of prolificacy. Lamb mortality at birth was high in BFL (23.7%) compared to BS, FL and S (6.5, 0.0 and 0.0%, respectively, P < 0.001). Litter size at weaning (50 d of age) averaged 1.9, 1.8, 1.5 and 1.3 for BS, BFL, FL and S ewe lambs (BS vs. S, P < 0.02). Growth performance of H-sired progeny from the four genetic groups of ewes showed that H × S lambs had the highest average daily gain in both preweaning and postweaning periods (preweaning ADG: 349.9 g d−1; postweaning ADG: 332.1 g d−1) while the other genotypes of lambs performed equally (preweaning ADG: 267.4, 249.5 and 246.8 g d−1 for H × FL, H × BFL and H × BS, respectively; postweaning ADG: 281.2, 276.8 and 281.8 g d−1 for the same genetic groups). Overall productivity of ewe lambs in terms of kilograms of lamb produced showed a slight, nonsignificant, advantage for Booroola-cross ewe lambs (55.8 and 54.5 kg for BS and BFL) over purebred S (51.6 kg) and FL (44.9 kg). These results indicate that ovulation rate and litter size can be increased by incorporating F gene in both prolific (FL) and nonprolific (S) background genotypes without resulting in any significant difference in total weight of lamb produced per ewe. <p>In order to establish a lighting regime suitable for rabbit farms in East China, the effects of lighting schedule, intensity and colour on the reproductive performance of rabbit does were evaluated by three experiments, respectively. In experiment 1, does were exposed to different lighting schedules: 16L:8D-continuous, 16L:8D-18d (6 d before artificial insemination (AI) to 12 d post-AI), 16L:8D-6d (6 d before AI to the day of AI) and 12L:12D-continuous. In experiment 2, does were exposed to different light intensities: 40 lx, 60 lx, 80 lx and 120 lx. In experiment 3, does were exposed to different light colours: white, yellow, blue and red. For all experiments, conception rate, kindling rate and pre-weaning mortality were calculated; litter size at birth, litter weight at birth, litter size at weaning, litter weight at weaning and individual kit weight at weaning were recorded. Results showed that none of the reproductive parameters of does were affected by the application of 16L:8D-18d lighting schedule compared with the continuous 16L:8D group(<em>P</em>&gt;0.05). Moreover, rabbits does exposed to 80 lx light performed as well as those under 120 lx light in conception rate, kindling rate, litter size (total and alive) at birth and litter weight at birth (<em>P</em>&gt;0.05). Furthermore, the exposures of 60 lx and 80 lx light were beneficial for litter weight at weaning. In addition, red light had a positive effect, as it led to a larger litter size and litter weight at weaning and lower pre-weaning mortality than white light (<em>P</em>&lt;0.05). In summary, a 16L:8D photoperiod with 80 lx red light from 6 d before AI to 12 d post-AI is recommended for use in breeding of rabbit does according to our results.</p>

The effect of rebreeding interval on the reproductive performance and body weight changes of does during pregnancy was investigated using 24 multiparous crossbred (New Zealand White X California) does. The does were placed on three treatments comprising mating at 14, 21 and 28 days postpartum. The docs were served 250g-concentrate meal (23% CP und 2600 kcal ME/kg) daily, while water was given ad libitum. Parameters monitored were doe willingness to mate, doe weights during pregnancy, feed intake, pregnancy rate, litter size and weight at birth, alive at birth and up to 21 days postpartum and stillbirth rate. Kits were weaned at 4 weeks of age. Results obtained showed that does mated 14 days postpartum lost more weight in the second week of pregnancy than the other groups. Rebreeding interval did not significantly (P>0.05) affect doe weight gain in the 19, 3" and 4th weeks of pregnancy. Does mated 14-d postpartum had significantly (P<0.05) higher feed intake during the l", 2nd and 3rd weeks of pregnancy. Feed:guin ratio was higher for does mated 21 d postpartum than for other treatments. Pregnancy rate was higher in the 14-d group and lowest in the 28-d group. Willingness to mate also decreased with increasing rebreeding interval. Litter size at birth, number of kits alive at birth and up to 28 days postpartum were not affected (P>0.05) by rebreeding interval as was the case for litter birth weight and percent stillbirths. Does mated 14 days postpartum however, had numerically more kits alive at birth and up to 28 days postpartum than the other groups. Litter weights were slightly higher for does mated 14 and 21 days postpartum than 28 days. It is concluded from this study that mating does 14 days postpartum under tropical conditions could increase the number of kits weaned per doe and hence increase profitability of the rabbit production enterprise.

Of 19 Romanov ewe lambs exposed to ram lambs up to 90 d of age, 11 lambed at 233 ± 2.8 d of age and 39.2 ± 0.74 kg body weight. They lambed 1.54 and weaned 1.18 lambs. Of these 11 ewes, 73% lambed again at 16 mo compared to 100% for less precocious ewes. Litter size was 2.50 and 3.25 at birth and 2.00 and 2.38 lambs at 70 d for the two groups, respectively. By 16 mo of age, both groups of ewes weighed about 53 kg, the ewes which lambed twice produced slightly more lambs; however, the weight of lambs produced at 70 d was similar in both groups (53.5 vs. 52.6 kg). This study aimed to evaluate study the influence of cattle hypophysis extract (HE) on the reproductive performance of post partum sows. Twenty landrace sows, 45 days after partum were divided into four groups, five sows each. All were injected with HE intramuscularly. Group I (P0) was injected with 3 ml of saline solution, Group II (P1) was injected with 3 ml contain of 10 mg/EH/Kg body weight (BW), Group III (P2) was injected with 3 ml contain of 20 mg/EH/Kg BW, Group IV (P3) was injected with 3 ml contain of 40 mg/EH/Kg BW. Every sows that showed the estrus symptom were inseminated artificially on the second days, twice each in the morning and evening. The intensity of estrus, length of estrus, number of service preconception (S/C), conception rate (CR), litter size, weight of piglet and milk production were recorded. The result showed that the score of estrus intensity in Group I, II, III and IV were 1.40; 2.40; 2.80 and 2.80 respectively with the length of estrus in each group were 4.40; 5.00; 5.00; 5.60 days respectively. The number of service in Group I, II, III and IV of each pregnancy were 4.40; 1.40; 1.00 and 1.20 with the CR were 0; 60; 100; and 80% respectively. The litter size produced of Group I, II, III and IV were 4.00; 6.00; 10.60; 8.40 respectively. The average of piglet body weight of Group I, II, III and IV were 1.20; 1.36; 1.56 and 1.35 kg respectively. The milk production of each sows of Group I, II, III and IV were 13; 41; 93; 88 g respectively. It can be concluded that cattle hypophysis extract improves the performance of post partum sows with the best level was 20 mg EH/kg of body weight. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan mempelajari pengaruh pemberian ekstrak hipofisis terhadap performans reproduksi induk babi betina post partum. Penelitian ini menggunakan 20 ekor induk babi betina jenis landrace, dibagi kedalam empat kelompok perlakuan masing-masing terdiri atas lima ekor induk babi. Babi betina yang baru 45 hari menyapih anaknya diinjeksi dengan ekstrak hipofisis (EH) secara intramuskuler. Kelompok I (P0) diinjeksi dengan 3 mL NaCl fisiologis; Kelompok II (P1) diinjeksi dengan 3 mL NaCL mengandung 10 mg EH/kg bobot badan (BB); Kelompok III (P2) diinjeksi dengan 3 mL NaCl mengandung 20 mg EH/kg BB: Kelompok IV (P3) diinjeksi dengan 3 mL NaCl mengandung 20 mg EH/kg BB. Setiap induk babi yang menunjukkan gejala estrus diinseminasi pada hari kedua dengan interval dua kali, pagi dan sore. Peubah yang diamati adalah intensitas estrus, lama estrus, jumlah perkawinan per kebuntingan (S/C), angka konsepsi (conception rate/CR), litter size, bobot lahir anak, dan produksi susu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan skor intensitas estrus kelompok I, II, III, dan IV masing-masing 1,40; 2,40; 2,80; 2,80 dengan lama estrus masing-masing kelompok secara berturut-turut 4,40; 5,00; 5,00; 5,60 hari. Nilai S/C masing-masing adalah 4,40; 1,40; 1,00; 1,20 dengan CR masing-masing 0; 60; 100; dan 80%. Total jumlah anak yang dihasilkan kelompok I, II, III, dan IV masing-masing adalah 4,00; 6,00; 10,60; dan 8,40 ekor. Rataan bobot lahir anak per ekor pada kelompok I; II; III; dan IV masing-masing adalah 1,20; 1,36; 1,56; dan 1,35 kg. Produksi susu per induk pada kelompok I, II, III, dan IV masingmasing adalah 13; 41; 93, dan 88 g. Simpulan dari penelitian ini adalah ekstrak hipofisis dapat meningkatkan performans induk babi post partum. Dosis terbaik adalah 20 mg EH/kg BB.
