SUPPLEMENTAL VALUE OF ASCORBIC ACID DURING LATE GESTATION ON PIGLET SURVIVAL AND EARLY GROWTH

Twenty-six pregnant sows were included in four different dietary treatments as follows: (1) Control group with no vitamin C supplementation; (2) vitamin-C-supplemented group receiving 1 g/day ascorbic acid provided in a gelatin capsule; or (3) vitamin-C-supplemented group receiving 1 g/day ascorbic acid in a powder form spread on the top of the pelleted meal; (4) as (3) but receiving 10 g/day ascorbic acid. Vitamin-C-supplemented sows in treatments 2 and 4 showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in blood plasma vitamin C prefarrowing. Pregnant sows receiving 10 g/day vitamin C supplement showed a significantly (P < 0.05) higher concentration of this vitamin in the urine than either control or sows receiving 1 g/day vitamin C supplementation. Sows in treatment 4 showed a significantly higher (P < 0.05) vitamin C content in colostrum than control animals. During lactation, no significant difference in vitamin C content in milk was observed between control and animals receiving 10 g/day vitamin C supplement. The vitamin C content in the plasma of the piglets at birth indicated that supplementing vitamin C to the mothers, significantly (P < 0.05) increased the concentration of this vitamin in the newborn piglet compared to control animals. However, the piglet survival and growth up to weaning at 3 wk of age was not significantly affected by dietary vitamin C supplementation of the mothers' diet. The concentrations of ascorbic acid in several tissues of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are significantly influenced by various dietary treatments. Ascorbic acid was taken up readily by erythrocytes, kidney, liver, intestine, spleen, and brain in fish fed an ascorbate supplemented diet (AA group), the concentration being from 1.5 to 14.8-fold higher than in fish fed a diet lacking ascorbate (control group). In fish fed a diet supplemented with an equimolar amount of ascorbic acid in the form of ascorbic sulfate (AS group) the ascorbic acid concentrations in kidney, intestine, and erythrocytes were significantly elevated above those of the control group. Ascorbic sulfate was found in kidney, liver, and intestine of the AS group, but not in other groups. In fish fed a diet devoid of vitamin C the ascorbic acid concentrations in kidney, liver, intestine, and spleen were signficantly lower than in fasting fish over the same period of time (28 d), suggesting a high demand for vitamin C in an actively feeding animal. Salmonid fish are therefore probably unable to utilize ascorbic sulfate sufficiently to prevent the appearance of vitamin C deficiency, and thus resemble scurvy-prone mammals in this respect.

Although the role of vitamin C in common cold incidence had been studied extensively, the level of vitamin C intake has not been unequivocally shown to affect the incidence of colds. In the present study the six largest vitamin C supplementation (≥ 1 g/d) studies, including over 5000 episodes in all, have been analysed, and it is shown that common cold incidence is not reduced in the vitamin C-supplemented groups compared with the placebo groups (pooled rate ratio (RR) 0·99; 95% CI 0·93, 1·04). Consequently these six major studies give no evidence that high-dose vitamin C supplementation decreases common cold incidence in ordinary people. Nevertheless, the analysis was continued with the hypothesis that vitamin C intake may affect common cold susceptibility in specific groups of people. It was assumed that the potential effect of supplementation might be most conspicuous in subjects with low dietary vitamin C intake. The average vitamin C intake has been rather low in the UK and plasma vitamin C concentrations are in general lower in males than in females. In four studies with British females vitamin C supplementation had no marked effect on common cold incidence (pooled RR 0·95; 95% CI 0·86, 1·04). However, in four studies with British male schoolchildren and students a statistically highly significant reduction in common cold incidence was found in groups supplemented with vitamin C (pooled RR 0·70; 95% CI 0·60, 0·81). Thus, these studies with British males indicate that vitamin C intake has physiological effects on susceptibility to common cold infections, although the effect seems quantitatively meaningful only in limited groups of people and is not very large.

In total thirty pigs (Slovak Meaty) defined by DNA based test as not susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (non-mutant on RYR1) were used in the experiment. Treatment consisted in supplementation of vitamin E (500 mg &alpha;-tocopherol/kg diet as &alpha;-tocopherol acetate) (group E) and the same doses of vitamin E plus vitamin C (200 mg L-ascorbic acid/kg diet) (group E + C) to finishing pigs for the last 30 days before slaughter. The higher dietary vitamin E level resulted in higher levels of &alpha;-tocopherol in fresh (24 h), chill-stored (5 days, 4&deg;C), chill-stored and cooked (80&deg;C) and frozen meat (3 months, &ndash;25&deg;C), (P &lt; 0.05). Higher dietary vitamin C resulted in higher levels L-ascorbic acid in fresh and chill-stored meat (P &lt; 0.05) but no significant differences vs. control pigs were observed in cooked and frozen meats. Supplementation with vitamins E and C (group E + C) had positive effects on pH (45 min) (P = 0.06) and on drip loss (P &lt; 0.05) values as compared to control group. The rate of oxidation (malondialdehyde-MDA production) by stimulation with Fe<sup>2+</sup>/ascorbate (incubation of muscle LD for 0 and 30 min) was higher in control group as compared to both experimental groups (P &lt; 0.05). Positive effects of vitamin E on oxidative stability measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS, MDA) were observed mainly in chill-stored meat (P &lt; 0.05). Using TBARS method, no additional effect of vitamin C on oxidative stability of fresh, chill-stored, cooked and frozen meat was found. In conclusion, supplementation of the combination of vitamin E (500 mg &alpha;-tocopherol/kg diet) and vitamin C (200 mg L-ascorbic acid/kg diet) for 30 days before slaughter improved meat quality values (drip loss, pH), however, it seems to depend on the genetic background of animals (occurrence of mutation on RYR1). Oxidative stability of meat lipids measured as TBARS value can be improved by vitamin E supplementation to feed. &nbsp;

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of VêO® premium and vitamin C (Vit. C) supplementation on lipid profile before and during pregnancy in local Iraqi ewes during heat stress. The study was conducted in a private field in Fallujah city, west Iraq, during the period from 6/8/2019 to 8/2/2020. Twenty local Iraqi ewes were divided randomly into four equal groups (5 for each group) The first group (T1) was given VêO® premium (4 g/ ewe/ day), the second group (T2) was given VêO® premium (2 g/ ewe/ day), and the third group (T3) was given Vit. C (40 mg/ ewe/ day), and the fourth group (T4) was left without treatment, as a control group. After 14 days of treatment, vaginal sponges were inserted for 14 days and, after their withdrawal, the rams were introduced for 6 days. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein into vacutainer tubes (10 ml) at 4 periods (periods 1 and 2 before pregnancy; periods 3 and 4 during pregnancy). Lipid profile parameters were also estimated, which includes cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and malondialdehyde (MDA). There were no significant difference in the serum levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, and LDL among the various treatments before and during pregnancy. The level of VLDL was significantly higher in T2 group as compared to the other treatments (P≤0.05) at the fourth periods. There was a significant difference in the level of MDA (P≤0.05) in treatment T3 in the first period compared with the treatments T1, T2, and T4, whereas treatment T4 showed significantly higher level (P≤0.05) in the second, third, and fourth periods as compared to treatments T1, T2, and T3. In conclusion, different effects of VêO® premium and Vitamin C supplementation were noticed on the lipid profile before and during pregnancy in local Iraqi ewes during heat stress.

Atherosclerosis is a pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory disease state, which is the underlying cause of most cardiovascular events, estimated to affect 5.2% of the Australian population. Diet, and specifically vitamin C, through its antioxidant properties can play a role in impeding the development and progression of atherosclerosis. This systematic review conducted comprehensive searches in Medline, Emcare, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane using key search terms for vitamin C, plasma vitamin C, supplementation, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The results demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation resulted in a significant increase in vitamin C levels in populations with or without CVD, except for one study on the CVD population. It was also seen that the healthy population baseline and post-intervention vitamin C levels were high compared to the CVD population. However, further research is indicated for CVD population groups with varying baseline vitamin C levels, such as low baseline vitamin C, within a more representative elderly cohort in order to formulate and update vitamin C repletion guidelines.

The ascorbic acid (vitamin C) content of fresh imported field tomatoes and Nova Scotia greenhouse and field tomatoes was determined on a bi-weekly basis during the period of availability of each type of tomato to the Nova Scotia consumer in 1984. The average ascorbic acid contents of imported and Nova Scotia field and greenhouse tomatoes were 13.3, 16.7 and 17.7 mg 100 g−1 fresh weight, respectively. A study of nine recommended or promising field tomatoes for the Atlantic region showed significant differences in ascorbic acid content among the cultivars. The cultivar Quick Pick had the highest ascorbic acid content of 22.5 ± 1.5 mg 100 g−1, the cultivar Campbell 18 had the lowest content, 12.0 ± 2.9 mg 100 g−1. In Dombito greenhouse tomatoes the stage of maturity and the effect of cluster location were tested against ascorbic acid content. The lowest ascorbic acid content of 9.1 ± 1.0 mg 100 g−1 was found with the small green tomatoes while others from mature green to overripe contained 14.0–16.7 mg 100 g−1. Tomatoes from different cluster locations showed no significant difference in ascorbic acid content.Key words: Vitamin C, L-ascorbic acid, tomatoes

Abstract Background Coronary hearth diseases are among the main causes of death in adults. Increase of oxidative stress and defects in antioxidant defense play a major role in endothelium performance and are an effective factor in progress of atherosclerosis. Some studies have also reported different malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity among the atherosclerosis patients.Methods In this case-control study, 44 atherosclerosis patients referring to Shahid Madani treatment-education center were considered as the case group; while 44 healthy peoples were placed in the control group. Demographic data and anthropometric indices were measured. Food frequency questionnaire and international physical activity questionnaires were also completed. After 12 hours of fasting, 10 ml blood was sampled from the participants. Uric acid, vitamin C, TAC and MDA were also measured. The data were finally analyzed by SPSS Ver 22 software.Results A significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of uric acid (P<0.001) and vitamin C (P<0.03). However, mean MDA and TAC showed no significant difference between the two groups. The two groups’ difference in terms of vitamin A, E and beta carotene, zinc and selenium intake was not significant. A significant difference was however detected between the two groups in terms of vitamin C (P<0.047). A significant relationship was also observed between the systolic pressure and CHD (P<0.028).Conclusion Results of this study indicated that the uric acid and vitamin C levels of atherosclerosis patients had significant increase and decrease in comparison with the healthy subjects, respectively. Mean TAC and antioxidant levels of their diets (except for vitamin C) showed no significant difference. Systolic blood pressure of the patients was significantly higher than the controls.

Background: Tooth extraction can cause alveolar resorption, and will reduce the denture retention. The process of bone resorption looks like the process of osteoporosis. Calcium and vitamin D supplementation is the rational therapy for minimizing bone loss. Miacalcic is the drug of choice for osteporotic patient. Purpose: This study is aimed to know whether the combination of miacalcic, calcium lactate, and vitamin C are effective in inhibiting post extracted alveolar resorption. Methods: Thirty three healthy postmenopausal women were chosen as samples and they were classified randomly into control group (without treatment), 1st experiment group (treatment was started 3 months post extraction), and 2nd experiment group (treatment was started at the 2nd day post extraction). The treatment was done by giving miacalcic nasal spray, calcium lactate 500 mg and vitamin C 100 mg tablets every morning in 10 days every month for 3 months. X-ray photo of the post extracted area were taken an hour, 3 months, and 6 months post-extraction. Results: After 6 month, there was significant difference in buccolingual thickness decreasing among three groups (p<0.05). The maximum mean difference of buccolingual thickness decreasing was 0.72 mm, between control and 2nd experiment groups. There was no significant difference about decreasing bone density among them (p>0.10). The maximum difference of the mean of density decreasing was 1,906 g/cm2/mm between control and 2nd experiment groups. The increasing density mostly occurred in the 2nd experiment group. Conclusion: The combination of miacalcic, calcium lactate, and vitamin C are effective for inhibiting alveolar resorption, although statistically there was no significant difference about bone density decreasing. The sooner this treatment is given the better result will be achieved.Latar belakang: Pencabutan gigi menyebabkan resorpsi tulang alveolaris, dan akan mengurangi retensi geligi tiruan. Proses resorpsi tulang alveol pada osteoporosis mirip dengan proses resorpsi tulang pada penyembuhan luka bekas pencabutan. Miacalcic adalah obat utama untuk penderita osteoporosis. Kalsium dan vitamin D merupakan terapi yang rasional untuk meminimalkan resorpsi tulang. tujuan: Membuktikan apakah kombinasi miacalcic, kalsium laktat, and vitamin C juga efektif menghambat resorpsi tulang alveol pasca pencabutan. Metode: Sampel 33 wanita postmenopause yang sehat, terbagi secara acak ke dalam kelompok kontrol (tanpa perlakuan), kelompok eksperimen 1 (perlakuan mulai 3 bulan pasca pencabutan) dan kelompok eksperimen 2 (perlakuan mulai hari kedua pasca pencabutan). Perlakuannya yaitu: pemberian miacalcic semprot hidung, tablet kalsium laktat 500 mg dan vitamin C 100 mg setiap pagi, 10 hari dalam sebulan, selama tiga bulan. Foto sinar-X dari regio pasca pencabutan dibuat satu jam, 3 bulan, dan 6 bulan pasca pencabutan. Hasil: 6 bulan pasca-cabut, ada beda bermakna perihal selisih tebal bukolingual tulang alveol antar ketiga kelompok (p<0,05). Rerata penurunan ketebalan ini maksimal sebanyak 0.72 mm, antara kelompok kontrol dan kelompok eksperimen 2. Penurunan kepadatan tulang antar ketiga kelompok tidak bermakna (p>0,10). Beda maksimum rerata kepadatan tulang antara kelompok kontrol dan kelompok eksperimen 2 sebesar 1,906 g/cm2/mm. Peningkatan kepadatan terbanyak dialami anggota kelompok eksperimen 2. Kesimpulan: Kombinasi miacalcic, kalsium laktat, vitamin C efektif menghambat resorpsi tulang alveolaris, walaupun secara statistik beda penurunan kepadatan tidak bermakna. Makin awal pemberian perlakuan, hasilnya akan lebih baik.
