Data from 290 grade Corriedale sheep, ranging from 1 to 428 days of age, were used to study the relationships between age and the following characteristics: body weight, staple length, fibre thickness, and clean fleece weight. The difference between means and regressions for sex and type of birth also were evaluated.Body weights increased during the growth period from 50 to 428 days of age but, after 300 days, approached constancy asymptotically. The body weights of single lambs were greater (p <.01) than those of twins; also, wethers were heavier than females at all ages. The average daily rate of gain was higher, though not significantly, for singles and wethers than for twins and females, respectively. However, in the single lambs, the difference in rate of gain between wethers and ewes was significant (p <.05).Staple lengths snowed a declining growth rate with progressing age whereas fibre cross-sectional area showed a linear increase. The increase in clean fleece weight with age was expressed by a quadratic function. The difference in fleece weights between sexes were negligible and the rates of increase were essentially the same. However, there were significant differences (p <.01) in means and regressions between singles and twins.

The relative importance of variation in the components of wool production to variation in wool production itself was estimated by two methods of analysis. About 30% of the attributable variation in total fleece weight was found to be due to variation in surface area and 70% was due to wool production per unit skin area. Between 50 and 60% of the variation amongst sheep in the latter character was found to be due to variation in fibre weight, the rest being attributed to variation in number of fibres per unit area (fibre density). The variation in mean fibre weight was further partitioned into 50 to 70% due to variation in mean cross-sectional area and the remainder to variation in mean fibre length.Variation in wool production per unit skin area was also analysed according to growth period and position on the body. The results are discussed in relation to the partition of variance in wool production of other breeds.

Abstract: Routine blood examination is the earliest blood test or screening test to determine the diagnosis of an abnormality. Blood easily froze if it is outside the body and can be prevented by the addition of anticoagulants, one of which Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA). Currently available vacuum tubes containing EDTA anticoagulants in the form of K2EDTA and K3EDTA. K3EDTA is usually a salt that has better stability than other EDTA salts because it shows a pH approaching a blood pH of about 6.4. The purpose of this research is to know the difference of erythrocyte index results include MCH, MCV and MCHC using K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA. This research is a cross sectional design. This study used venous blood samples mixed with K2EDTA anticoagulant and venous blood mixed with K3EDTA anticoagulants, each of 30 samples. Data were collected and analyzed using paired different test. Based on data analysis that has been done on MCH examination, p value <0,05 then there is a significant difference between samples with K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA to erythrocyte index value. Then on the examination of MCV and MCHC obtained p value <0.05 then there is no significant difference between samples with K3EDTA anticoagulant with K2EDTA to erythrocyte index value.

SummaryBlood samples were taken at 9, 10 and 11 weeks of age from 230 male Hereford × Friesian calves, the progeny of 12 Hereford bulls. Concentrations of blood glucose, serum albumin, inorganic phosphate and sodium were measured and correlated with body weights and growth rates until slaughter at 19½ months of age.Correlations between growth rates and glucose concentrations (0·44) and between growth rates and albumin concentrations (0·38) were observed until 4 months of age. Similar correlations between body weights and blood glucose or albumin concentrations persisted until 6 months of age. By 10 months, however, the correlations had begun to decline, and by slaughter they had become insignificant.Correlations between growth rates and inorganic phosphate or sodium concentrations were smaller, and also decreased with age.The effect of hypoglycaemia on growth rate was compared with the effect of enzootic pneumonia. Although the 10% of calves with the lowest glucose concentrations were growing 24% more slowly than the other calves at the time of sampling, this growth depression was not related to pneumonia, and they subsequently made up for most of the early loss of growth.Three blood samples were also taken from 22 Hereford bulls. No significant correlations were observed between the blood composition of the bulls and the body weights or weight gains of their progeny.

Abstract Objective Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are energy sources needed by the body for performing daily activities and generating primary energy substances. In women who have undergone menopause, the function of thyroid hormone in their body begins to decline and thus affects the ability of the body to produce energy. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the intakes of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and random blood sugar levels in menopausal women. Methods This study was a correlational analytical research with a cross-sectional design, which was conducted in 72 menopausal women recruited by the purposive sampling technique. In this study, a 24-hour food recall form was used, and randomized blood sugar levels were measured using a glucometer. The analysis of the data was performed using a Pearson product moment and multiple linear regression. Results Carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels with an F-value of 25.810 and a p-value of 0.000. Meanwhile, adjusted R2 showed the value of 0.411, indicating that the difference in the intake of carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels by 41.1%. Conclusions Intake of carbohydrates and fats affected random blood sugar levels, whereas the rest were influenced by other factors, and protein intake was unrelated to random blood sugar levels in menopausal women.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the cross - sectional area (CSA) of multifidus and Iliopsoas muscles and the lumbar extension muscle strength according to degenerative spinal diseases (LHI; lumbar herniation of intervertebral disc group, SS; spinal stenosis group, S; spondylolisthesis group).METHODS The CSA of multifidus and Iliopsoas muscles size were measured by PACS(Picture Achiving and Communication System) using MRI at the L4/5 level and lumbar extension muscle strength (72˚, 60˚, 48˚, 36˚, 24˚, 12˚, 0˚) was measured using lumbar extension machine(MedX) in 97 patients of degenerative spinal diseases(male: 57, female: 40). The collected data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA using the SPSS program.RESULTS The results of this study showed that the CSA of total and right multifidus muscle in the LHI was significantly higher than that of the S (p <.05; p <.05) in the male group. The difference between the left and right CSA of multifidus in the LHI group was significantly higher than that of the SS (p <.05) in the male group (p <.05) and total group (p <.05). The CSA of iliopsoas muscle in the S was significantly higher than that of the LHI in the male and total group (p <.05; p <.05). In case of lumbar extension muscle strength, the S showed significantly higher muscle strength at 36 and 48 degrees than that of the SS in the male group. In the total group, LHI showed significantly higher muscle strength at 60 degrees of lumbar extension muscle strength than that of the S.CONCLUSION Multifidus muscle appears to be a key factor in prevention and treatment intervention in low back pain patients. In particular, in the case of S group, exercise therapy for strengthening the multifidus muscle is need for the rehabilitation.

Nasal symptoms often are inconsistent with rhinoscopic findings. However, the proper diagnosis and treatment of nasal pathology requires an objective evaluation of the narrow segments of the anterior part of the nasal cavities (minimal cross-sectional area [MCSA]). The problem is that the value of MCSA is not a unique parameter for the entire population, but rather it is a distinctive value for particular subject (or smaller groups of subjects). Consequently, there is a need for MCSA values to be standardized in a simple way that facilitates the comparison of results and the selection of our treatment regimens. We examined a group of 157 healthy subjects with normal nasal function. A statistically significant correlation was found between the body surface area and MCSA at the level of the nasal isthmus and the head of the inferior turbinate. The age of subjects was not found a statistically significant predictor for the value of MCSA. The results show that the expected value of MCSA can be calculated for every subject based on anthropometric data of height and weight.

A neutrally buoyant slender body of arbitrary sectional form, submerged beneath a free surface, is free to respond to an incident plane progressive wave system. The fluid is assumed inviscid, incompressible, homogeneous and infinitely deep. The first-order oscillatory motion of the body and the second-order time-average vertical force and pitching moment acting on the body are obtained in terms of Kochin's function. By use of slender-body theory for a deeply submerged body, the final expressions for the mean force and the moment are shown to depend on the longitudinal distribution of sectional area and added mass and on the amplitude and the frequency of the ambient surface waves. The magnitude of the mean force for various simple geometric cylinders is compared with that of a circular cylinder of equal cross-sectional area. The mean force on a nonaxisymmetric body is often approximated by replacing the section with circular profiles of equivalent cross-sectional area. A better scheme of approximation is presented, based on a simple way of estimating the two-dimensional added mass. It is expected that the effect of the cross-sectional geometry on mean vertical force and moment will be more significant when the body is very close to the free surface.

Background. Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, and multifactorial dermatosis that impairs quality of life (QoL). Health-related QoL has become an important element in medical decision-making along with the effectiveness and the harmlessness of the treatments. Objective. To assess the impact of psoriasis in the QoL of patients with psoriasis by using the DLQI scales. Methods. A cross-sectional study from January to June 2018 was conducted in the Department of Dermatology of the University Hospital Joseph Raseta Befelatanana, Antananarivo, Madagascar, including patients more than 18 years old with mild to severe psoriasis. The severity of psoriasis was assessed using the “Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI)”. QoL of patients with psoriasis was evaluated by using the DLQI scales. Results. 80 patients were included, their mean age was 36.5 years, and the male to female was 1.5 : 1. The mean DLQI score was 13.8. Symptoms, feelings, and psychic were the most altered dimensions. QoL was impaired in young patients, single, having medium level education. Even though patients with disease duration more than 5 years had higher DLQI score than other patients, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.36). Furthermore, the clinical presentation of psoriasis did not influence the patient’s QoL (p=0.73). Patients with nail involvement had QoL impaired but the difference with another localization was not statistically significant (p=0.2). The quality of life was influenced by body area involved. The higher the body surface area involved, the more QoL is impaired (p=0.002). Furthermore, the higher the PASI, the more QoL is altered (p=0.002). Conclusion. Psoriasis has a negative impact in the quality of life in Malagasy patients with psoriasis, especially in younger and single patients. Worse quality of life is correlated to severity of psoriasis.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of functional overload (FO) combined with growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor I (GH/IGF-I) administration on myonuclear number and domain size in rat soleus muscle fibers. Adult female rats underwent bilateral ablation of the plantaris and gastrocnemius muscles and, after 7 days of recovery, were injected three times daily for 14 days with GH/IGF-I (1 mg/kg each; FO + GH/IGF-I group) or saline vehicle (FO group). Intact rats receiving saline vehicle served as controls (Con group). Muscle wet weight was 32% greater in the FO than in the Con group: 162 ± 8 vs. 123 ± 16 mg. Muscle weight in the FO + GH/IGF-I group (196 ± 14 mg) was 59 and 21% larger than in the Con and FO groups, respectively. Mean soleus fiber cross-sectional area of the FO + GH/IGF-I group (2,826 ± 445 μm2) was increased compared with the Con (2,044 ± 108 μm2) and FO (2,267 ± 301 μm2) groups. The difference in fiber size between the FO and Con groups was not significant. Mean myonuclear number increased in FO (187 ± 15 myonuclei/mm) and FO + GH/IGF-I (217 ± 23 myonuclei/mm) rats compared with Con (155 ± 12 myonuclei/mm) rats, although the difference between FO and FO + GH/IGF-I animals was not significant. The mean cytoplasmic volume per myonucleus (myonuclear domain) was similar across groups. These results demonstrate that the larger mean muscle weight and fiber cross-sectional area occurred when FO was combined with GH/IGF-I administration and that myonuclear number increased concomitantly with fiber volume. Thus there appears to be some mechanism(s) that maintains the myonuclear domain when a fiber hypertrophies.
