In situ digestibility and nutritive value of maize straw generated after Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation

The cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus on maize straw enhanced the nutritive value and the in situ digestibility of the straw. The addition of maize straw generated after mushroom cultivation to the diets of sheep increased the liveweight gain of the sheep and the efficiency of feed conversion of the straw. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of sugarcane silage with or without inoculation with P. acidipropionici or L. buchneri, over three fermentation periods. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 x 3 inoculant by fermentation period factorial arrangement (without inoculant, inoculant 1, inoculant 2; x three fermentation periods, 10, 60, 90 days). Values of pH, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose (HEM) and lignin were determined and in situ DM degradability profiles were modelled for parameters a, b and c, potential degradation (A) and effective degradability (ED). The 90 day fermentation yielded a lower pH for both inoculants. There was an interaction between inoculant and fermentation period (P < 0.05) for DM content, with a reduction in silage DM without the additive at 90 days. The CP, HEM, ADF and lignin contents of sugarcane were not influenced by the treatments. The addition of P. acidipropionici provided the lowest NDF content at 10 days and presented a higher fraction a, potential degradation and ED. At 60 days, there was no variation in soluble fraction, the control silage showed a higher fraction b, higher potential degradation and ED. At 90 days of fermentation, L. buchneri silages presented a higher fraction a, degradation rate and DE and a higher b value was obtained in the silage without inoculant. Inoculants are effective in maintaining the silage DM content and nutritional value during prolonged fermentation periods.

The fresh weight, dry matter (DM) contents and nutritional quality in maize vary considerably with variation in varieties, stages at which harvested, climatic conditions and agronomic factors. Recently, agronomists, nutritionists, and dairy producers have placed increased emphasis on factors affecting the nutritive value of maize. However, very little information is available on quantitative variability of the feed value of maize fodder as affected by such factors. This study was, therefore, carried out to assess the effect of harvesting of six different maize varieties at two stages (dates) of grain maturity on quality of both the stover and cobs.

The effect of adding 5% calcium lignosulfonate (LSO3) and heat to canola screenings on in situ ruminal and intestinal dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) disappearance in Holstein cows was investigated. Treatments consisted of untreated canola screenings, canola screenings that had been heated to 100 °C for 30 or 60 min and canola screenings that had 5% (wt wt−1) LSO3 added and were subsequently heated at 100 °C for 0, 30 or 60 min. Results indicate that treatment of canola screenings with 5% LSO3 and heated to 100 °C for 60 min was effective in reducing rumen degradation of DM and CP with a corresponding increase in disappearance in the lower gastrointestinal tract when compared to untreated and heat-treated canola screenings. The in vitro and in situ nutrient degradabilities of fenugreek hay and straw relative to late-cut alfalfa hay and barley straw were determined. Results indicated that the nutritive value of fenugreek hay was comparable to late cut alfalfa hay while that of genugreek straw was lower than barley straw. Key words: Fenugreek, hay, straw

An in situ study compared mature, frost-damaged safflower to full-bloom safflower and mid-bloom alfalfa-grass hay, with the full-bloom safflower and alfalfa-grass hay also used in a ewe (n = 40) feeding study. Feed refusals were higher (P < 0.05) for ewes fed the safflower, but feed conversion efficiency was improved (P < 0.05) for the safflower-fed sheep. Ewes were bred shortly after the 9-wk feeding trial and the proportion of ewes lambing was higher (P < 0.05) in the safflower-fed ewes. Sheep were able to utilise the safflower forage as thorough chewing of spines likely prevented mouth ulceration and the ewes selectively consumed the most nutrient-dense parts of the forage. Differences in in situ dry matter degradabilities occurred at all incubation times when 22 cultivars of barley gram grown at three locations were examined. Rapidly and slowly degradable fractions ranged from 25 to 40% and from 49 to 65%, respectively. Rates of degradation ranged from 23 to 35% h−1 (P = 0.03). Tall fescue (TF) and orchardgrass (OG) were fertilized with 0, 294 or 882 kg NH4NO3/ha and 0 or 833 kg K2SO4/ha to determine the effect on rates of apparent ruminal disappearance of herbage dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) using the in situ nylon bag technique. Losses of water-soluble and filtrable DM, N and S differed significantly due to herbage species, NH4NO3 and K2SO4 fertilization levels. After 24-h ruminal incubation, there was no difference between herbages in residual DM, N or S expressed as a proportion of original nutrient. Increasing level of NH4NO3 fertilization reduced (P < 0.001) 24-h residual DM and N and increased (P < 0.001) residual S. Potassium sulfate fertilization reduced (P < 0.001) residual herbage S after 24-h incubation. Rates of insoluble herbage DM and N disappearance (kd) did not differ between herbages but increasing level of NH4NO3 fertilization increased (P < 0.001) insoluble DM and N disappearance rates. Rate of insoluble S disappearance was lower (P < 0.05) for TF than OG but unaffected by fertilization. Effective ruminal degradability (ERD) of DM (P < 0.01) and release (ERR) of N (P < 0.001) and S (P < 0.05) were lower for OG than TF. Increasing NH4NO3 fertilization increased (P < 0.001) ERD and ERR of DM and N, respectively. Furthermore, NH4NO3 fertilization reduced (P < 0.001) while K2SO4 application increased (P < 0.001) ERR of herbage S. Simple correlation coefficients between kd of DM, N and S and original herbage total N concentration were r = 0.59 (P < 0.001), r = 0.51 (P < 0.001) and r = 0.36 (P < 0.05), respectively. The relationships between ERR of herbage S and total N or nonprotein S concentration in herbage were r = −0.74 (P < 0.001) and r = 0.70 (P < 0.001), respectively.
