The Duck Pond tin prospect is a vein- and strata-bound cassiterite prospect that is located 2 km west of the East Kemptville open-pit tin mine in southwestern Nova Scotia. The host rocks of the Duck Pond prospect are interbedded metawacke and meta-argillite that belong to the transition unit of the Meguma Group. These rocks contain quartz, sericite, chlorite, hematite, rutile, manganese oxides, feldspar, and porphyroblastic garnet, but not detrital cassiterite. The prospect is structurally controlled and contains several cross-cutting vein sets that have alkalic, chloritic, or argillic alteration assemblages. Muscovite is the main indicator mineral for alkalic alteration and occurs in veins that contain anorthoclase or quartz. Cassiterite is associated with chloritic alteration and occurs as subhedral to euhedral grains, acicular needles, and colloform layers in veins in meta-argillite and as strata-bound disseminations in metawacke. Most cassiterite precipitated under externally buffered conditions with respect to oxygen. Fe, Cu, Zn, and As sulphide minerals and quartz were deposited during argillic alteration. Late-stage processes such as recrystallization, sulphidation, and oxidation also occurred. Chalcopyrite is replaced by bornite and covellite; pyrite is replaced by marcasite.Unlike the F-rich East Kemptville deposit, fluorine-rich and tin-sulphide minerals are not present in the Duck Pond prospect. Trace tourmaline, absent at East Kemptville, is found at Duck Pond. However, the source of tin-mineralizing fluids at Duck Pond and East Kemptville was likely the granitic magma of the Davis Lake complex, which also hosts the East Kemptville deposit. From the mineral assemblages and textural relationships, it appears that as the temperature dropped from 425–405 °C to less than 200 °C at Duck Pond, the pH dropped from 5.2 to no lower than 3. Log [Formula: see text] dropped from at least −19 to −43. Log [Formula: see text] rose from < −15 to > −10. Cassiterite precipitated at the higher ends of the temperature and pH ranges and the lower end of the log [Formula: see text] range.

AbstractMore than 30 years ago, Cox and Singer (1986) suggested that magmatic platinum-group element (PGE)-Ni-Cu deposits are amongst the best understood of ore deposits, yet the origin of PGE mineralization in the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) remains controversial after a century of study. In the northern limb of the BIC, the unravelling of ore formation proved particularly difficult due to relatively poor outcrop, which is typically affected by contamination of the intruding magmas with the host rocks and expressed in the form of abundant xenoliths, footwall rafts and disturbance of magmatic stratigraphy. In this thematic issue, we present contributions on the Flatreef, a recently discovered world-class PGE-Ni-Cu deposit constituting a downdip extension of the mineralized unit of the Platreef of the northern limb. Two deep shafts are currently being sunk, making the Flatreef one of the most significant new mine development on the Bushveld in several decades.

Fission tracks in detrital apatites from the Cambro-Ordovician metasedimentary basement in the vicinity of the Carboniferous-hosted Gays River Pb–Zn deposit, Nova Scotia, provide a record of final cooling during uplift and erosion of the Meguma Zone and constrain the timing of ore formation. Apatite fission track ages range from 203 to 241 Ma, with typical uncertainties of ± 10 Ma. Mean confined track lengths generally vary between 12.0 and 13.4 μm and indicate that the apatites record "apparent" ages only. An inferred thermal history involving regional heating to paleotemperatures > 110 °C during late Paleozoic burial followed by cooling to ~ 110 °C prior to 240–220 Ma is suggested. A more recent phase or regional heating to paleotem-peratures probably in the range of 60–80 °C during Late Cretaceous – early Tertiary (ca. 100–50 Ma) burial is also indicated by the track length data. Apatite fission track ages and mean track lengths from drill-core samples immediately beneath the Gays River orebody are similar to those for regional outcrop samples. At minimum temperatures > 200 °C estimated for ore formation, sulphide mineralization must either have preceded or accompanied regional heating to paleotemperatures > 110 °C during the late Paleozoic. Sulphide mineralization at Gays River must therefore have taken place at some time after ca. 330 Ma (the stratigraphic age of the lower Windsor Group host rocks) but before ca. 240–220 Ma (the last cooling of Meguma Group basement below 110 °C). These constraints on the timing of ore formation at Gays River are compatible with previous suggestions that Pb–Zn mineralization of Carboniferous strata in Nova Scotia occurred at ca. 300 Ma.

Geochronology of detrital muscovite from the Lower Cretaceous of the central Scotian Basin has shown predominant supply of Meguma terrane detritus, including muscovite with Alleghanian (mid-Carboniferous to Permian) ages from the inner Scotian Shelf. In this study, 87 detrital muscovite grains from five wells in the eastern Scotian Basin, representing depositional ages from Tithonian to Early Albian, were dated by single-grain 40Ar/39Ar techniques. Previous work shows that the provenance of this sediment was different from wells in the central Scotian Basin. Compared with the central Scotian Basin, the muscovite age populations from the eastern Scotian Basin have more (20% versus 7%) pre-Devonian ages, derived from inboard terranes of the Appalachians. In both the central and eastern Scotian Basin, most old grains are found in the Tithonian and the Aptian–Albian, with fewer in the Valanginian and almost none in the Kimmeridgian and the Hauterivian–Barremian. These data suggest rapid unroofing of the Meguma terrane in the Kimmeridgian and Hauterivian–Barremian and greater supply of sediment from Newfoundland to the eastern Scotian Basin in the Tithonian and Aptian–Albian. Compared with the central Scotian Basin, which has most ages in the range 340–300 Ma, the muscovite age populations from the eastern Scotian Basin have a higher proportion of 420–340 Ma and in particular 300–260 Ma ages. Such late Alleghanian overprinting of argon ages is very rare on land in Nova Scotia, but in the Maritimes Basin, this was the time of uplift and erosion of strata.

We present the first description of organic-walled microfossils from Cambrian strata of the Bourinot belt, central Cape Breton Island. Age-diagnostic acritarchs have been recovered from the Dugald and MacMullin formations and from probable levels within the upper part of the Eskasoni Formation, which permit detailed correlations with acritarch-based zones in Newfoundland and Spain. The assemblage of acritarchs from the Dugald Formation confirms earlier assignments to the early middle Cambrian eteminicus Zone, but it also indicates that the upper part of the formation belongs to the hicksi Zone of the Drumian Stage. Acritarchs from the MacMullin Formation provide the first biostratigraphic evidence that this unit extends into the forchhammeri Zone of the Guzhangian Stage. These acritarchs are present in the lower part of the MacMullin Formation, putting into question earlier identification of hicksi Zone trilobites in this unit and raising the possibility of an unconformity. The data from the Bourinot belt provide additional evidence for the biostratigraphic utility of acritarchs in the Cambrian Acado-Baltic province.
