Abstract Background: The purpose of this study is to verify the improvement of remote qigong intervention on the quality of life and physical fitness of breast cancer patients after surgery by means of a randomized controlled trial, and to compare it with the conventional exercise combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training.Methods/design: The research approach applied in this study is a randomized controlled trial. After completing the baseline questionnaire and physical fitness test, participants were randomly assigned to either the qigong group or the combined exercise rehabilitation group. Patients in the qigong group performed Qigong-Baduanjin twice a week for 30 minutes each time under remote guidance and practiced Baduanjin by themselves at other times. Patients in the combined exercise rehabilitation group were given resistance training twice a week for 30 minutes under remote guidance, and walking the rest of the time. At the end of the 12-week intervention, outcomes testing and data collection were carried out. The primary outcomes are quality of life, measured using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FATC-B). The secondary outcomes include cardiopulmonary endurance, upper limb strength, lower limb strength and skinfold thickness.Discussion: The importance of postoperative exercise rehabilitation for breast cancer has been gradually accepted by more and more doctors and patients, but further research and development of simple and practical means of exercise rehabilitation are necessary. Purpose: This paper reports the methodology for undertaking a randomized controlled trial to assess the combined effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and activity pacing on fatigue experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Method: Fifty-eight patients experiencing severe fatigue will be randomized to a CBT group or usual care group. The intervention will be given for 6 sessions by a trained oncology nurse. Primary and secondary outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, the sixth week of intervention and at the third month post intervention. The primary outcome measure is fatigue (Brief Fatigue Inventory) and secondary outcome measures include depression (Patient Health Questionnaire) and quality of life (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire). The protocol is designed using the SPIRIT guidelines which is one of the EQUATOR checklists. Discussion: This is the first RCT that will determine the efficacy of CBT by integrating with activity pacing to reduce fatigue among breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The intervention design is novel in addressing multiple precipitating and perpetuating factors of fatigue and integrated with activity pacing in CBT. Conclusion: If the intervention is effective, this therapeutic approach can be incorporated into a routine health care for breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Trial registration: The study have been registered in Pan-African Clinical Trial Registry (website) on August 24, 2020. The trial registration number is PACTR202008881026130.

Abstract Introduction: While up to 60% of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy experience skin side effects reducing quality of life, it was unclear which individual product was beneficial. To evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored moisturizer with a high content (1.5%) of pseudo-ceramides on skin dryness due to chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. Methods: Randomized controlled trial conducted from February 2015 to October 2018. 204 breast cancer patients experiencing skin dryness after 1 cycle of chemotherapy were randomly assigned to 3 groups (tailored moisturizer with high pseudo-ceramide content; general moisturizer; and usual care). Skin dryness, dullness, quality of life, and changes in sebum level were assessed at baseline, 3 weeks, and 1 month after completion of chemotherapy. The primary objective of the trial was to compare the tailored moisturizer group to usual care.Results: At 1 month after completion of chemotherapy, the tailored moisturizer group was significantly less likely to report severe skin dryness compared to the usual care group (8.5 vs. 27.9%, respectively, P < 0.01). The tailored moisturizer group reported significantly lower levels of skin dullness and lower levels of impairment of dermatological quality of life compared with the other two groups. Conclusions: A tailored moisturizer with a high content of pseudo-ceramides improved skin dryness, dullness and dermatological quality of life compared to usual care in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
