ABSTRACT Objective: To measure conceptual oral health knowledge among school teachers using comprehensive measure of oral health knowledge (CMOHK) instrument. Materials and Methods: A total of 240 school teachers drawn through cluster random sampling from across Sullia taluk. Conceptual knowledge was assessed using Comprehensive measure of oral health knowledge questionnaire. Oral health status was recorded on a World Health Organization oral health assessment Proforma. Results: Overall distribution of CMOHK scores revealed that 106(44%) subjects had good conceptual oral health knowledge, 81(33.7%) subjects had fair and 53(22%) subjects were categorized under poor conceptual knowledge respectively. Statistically significant difference was observed for mean scores for conceptual knowledge in relation to gender (12.8v/s 15.3), in terms of type of school teachers (14.4 v/s 11.2) and in relation to age of the subjects. Primary school teachers exhibited a consistently better CMOHK scores 0.003(0.001-0.011) compared to their high school counterparts 0.003(0.001-0.012). Conclusion: The mean CMOHK score of this group was 12.5±1.3 and is considered to be fair. There is an inverse association between age, educational levels and income in relation to CMOHK scores.

Health-related behaviors are influenced by knowledge and awareness, with oral health being no exception. It is well-known that oral diseases are influenced by social determinants. There is an association between the oral health knowledge of mothers and the status of their children’s oral health. In Qatar, the knowledge and practices of oral health in preschool children have not been previously reported. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and related practices of mothers of preschool children about oral health in Qatar. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed by the principals of kindergarten to mothers of children attending 16 government kindergartens in Qatar. The questionnaire included 38 close-ended questions grouped into nine categories, addressing different aspects of knowledge and practices related to early childhood oral health. The questionnaire was constructed in English, before being translated into Arabic, which is the local language in Qatar. The questionnaire instrument was pre-tested on mothers with demographic characteristics matching the main population. These participants were not included in the main study. The questionnaire study was associated with a clinical epidemiological study to assess dental caries and enamel defects of the sampled children. The dmft caries index (decayed, missing and filled teeth) was used for that purpose according to the World Health Organization criteria. For the questionnaire administered to mothers with clinical survey variables, a binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associations between the measures of oral health status (dmft, Dental index) and mothers’ oral health knowledge and practices. A total of 48% mothers thought that children should have their teeth brushed from the age of three years and 42% chose younger than two years as a starting age for brushing. More than half (54%) of the mothers thought that children should not have their teeth flossed. In general, no significant statistical association was found between dmft and any other variables, except for whether or not the child had visited the dentist. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association between the measures of oral health status (dmft, DI) and mothers’ oral health knowledge and practices. After controlling for the other independent variables included in this model, the test of the model was not statistically significant, which indicated that none of the variables represent a significant risk for occurrence of caries. The only exception was whether or not the child had visited the dentist (odds ratio = 2.51, 95% confidence interval 1.091–5.774). Despite the existence of good knowledge of oral health care, there were deficiencies in the oral health care provided to children. This may reflect that seeking dental care is either not very important or it is challenging to obtain access to a child-friendly dentist in the public health system in Qatar. The results of this study suggest that there is a need for an oral health promotion program to fill the gaps in knowledge for mothers regarding oral health care for young children.

Background. Oral health is dependent on the knowledge and awareness of the individuals. Teachers as individuals influence the children in every aspect including oral health maintenance. The objective of this study was to assess the oral health knowledge, attitude, practices, and oral health status among school teachers in Chitwan District, Nepal. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 550 school teachers of private and government schools in Chitwan District, to assess the knowledge, attitude, practices, and oral health status. Descriptive analysis was done and data were analyzed using chi-square. A five-point Likert Scale was applied to compute knowledge, attitude, and practices of the school teachers. Results. Most of the school teachers had good knowledge about periodontal diseases in comparison to dental caries. Private school (20.7% : 57) teachers had higher good oral health knowledge as compared to government school teachers (9.8% : 27). An almost equal percentage of private and government teachers (73.5% : 202 and 74.2% : 204, respectively) were found with fair knowledge about oral health. Males had a higher percentage for good oral health knowledge as compared to females. Conclusion. There is an incredible need to improve oral health knowledge and attitude among school teachers concerning different problems of the oral cavity and the avoidance of dental diseases. These enhancements can be applied through regular training of teachers by oral health seminars, materials, and other such types of methods.

This study assessed self-reported oral health status, knowledge, and behaviours of people living with diabetes along with barriers and facilitators in accessing dental care. A cross sectional survey of 260 patients from four public diabetes clinics in Sydney, Australia was undertaken using a 35-item questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS software with descriptive and logistic regression analyses. More than half (53.1%) of respondents reported having dental problems which negatively impacted their related quality of life. Less than half (45%) had adequate oral health knowledge. Only 10.8% reported receiving any oral health information in diabetes care settings, which had higher odds of demonstrating adequate oral health knowledge (AOR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.06–6.34). Similarly, 62.7% reported seeing a dentist in the last 12 months. Having private health insurance (AOR, 3.70; 95% CI, 1.85–7.40) had higher odds of seeing a dentist in the past 12 months. Dental costs were a major contributor to avoiding or delaying dental visit. Patients living with diabetes have unmet oral health needs particularly around the awareness of its importance and access to affordable dental services. Diabetes care providers can play a crucial role in this area by promoting oral health to their patients.

Objective: To assess the oral health knowledge of mothers of children with cleft lip and/or palate, analyzing the practical application of this information on the basis of the oral hygiene of the children and caries prevalence of mothers and children. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Pediatric Dentistry sector of the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies. Patients: Mothers (n = 300) and their children with cleft lip and/or palate, ages 3 years to 5 years 6 months. Materials and Methods: An interview with questions related to dietary habits and oral health knowledge and habits was conducted. Children and their mothers also were evaluated by intraoral clinical examination. Results: Of the mothers, 47.3% displayed poor oral health status (Group A) and 52.7% had a satisfactory oral health status (Group B). Children in Group A presented a mean dmft of 6.0, whereas children in Group B had a mean dmft of 5.6. No significant differences were observed between groups. Mothers demonstrated a reasonable knowledge on prevention of dental caries and oral hygiene. Conclusion: Even though the mothers interviewed had some knowledge on the causes and prevention of dental caries, other factors should be regarded as relevant in the caries process.

ABSTRACT Introduction Teacher plays pivotal role in any educational system and if they are well educated, intellectually alive and take keen interest in their job, then only success is ensured. Present study was done with an aim to know the knowledge, attitude and practices among school teachers regarding oral health. Methods Closed ended questionnaire was filled by 500 school teachers chosen by stratified random sampling. Results Response rate is 100 % with 250 school teachers from Govt and privates schools. No statistical significant results were found based on age, sex, type of school and income when it comes to knowledge and attitude, but statistical significance was found based on income (p<0.05) when compared with behavior of school teachers with better practices on oral health seen as the monthly income increases. Conclusion Overall oral health knowledge attitude and behavior is poor among school teachers

Abstract Background Oral care is acknowledged as an integral component of general health and plays an essential role in establishing the desired level of quality of life for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Purpose To investigate oral health knowledge and dental behaviors in individuals with ASD in comparison with individuals without ASD in Jordan. Methods A case–control study was carried out among 296 caregivers of individuals with ASD (n = 147) and control (n = 149) groups. A closed ended, validated self-designed questionnaire was distributed. The questionnaire included questions addressing participant’s oral health knowledge and behaviour. Data were analyzed using SPSS® software Version 22 with a 0.05 level of significance. A Chi-square test and contingency-table analysis were performed. Results Individuals with ASD in Jordan were significantly less knowledgeable about different oral health aspects than individuals without ASD (p < 0.05). Fewer individuals in the ASD group brushed their teeth once or twice daily (89%), compared to the control group (93%). Only 15% of the ASD participants could brush their teeth without help. The use of fluoridated toothpaste and the frequency of using mouth rinse demonstrated a significant difference between groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion ASD individuals in Jordan suffer from a significant lack of oral knowledge comparing to their controls, leading to a misunderstanding of the basic and highly important dental health aspects. Indicating that the knowledge was not enough to influence their dental behaviors. Children with ASD and their families should receive appropriate education in special need oral health care given by oral health professionals to reduce the risk of having dental problems and oral disease and enhance their quality of life.

ABSTRACT Aim To assess the oral health status and felt needs of patients admitted to medical/surgical wards. Materials and methods The cross-sectional study included 346 patients who were recruited from medical/surgical wards. Dental parameters were recorded using the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Assessment Form for Adults, 2013. Results Mean age of patients was 40.77 [standard deviation (SD) ± 14.4] years; 36.4% aged > 45 years and 32.9% educated beyond 10 years of education. 77.2% used toothbrush and 75.7% toothpaste for cleaning of teeth. 91% brushed their teeth at least once a day and 77.7% performed tongue cleaning. Greater number of decayed teeth (3.43 ± 3.38) were seen in those educated ≤ 10 years when compared with those educated beyond this level (2.43 ± 2.55). Participants with low education attainment and higher age group (>45 years) had significantly more teeth missing due to caries/other reasons, and with deeper periodontal disease. Conversely, higher educated and younger aged group (<45 years) participants had significantly greater mean number of sound teeth and teeth without gingival and periodontal abnormalities. There was no significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers, those who ever visited a dentist or not, practicing or not practicing oral hygiene, using tobacco or not, those with diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension or without these conditions. Nearly 80% of the patients felt no requirement for dental treatment. Conclusion Despite adherence to oral hygiene practices, the oral health status of patients admitted to medical/surgical wards was poor. How to cite this article Avasthi A, Sogi GM, Veeresha KL. Aim: To assess dental caries knowledge, DMFT status and oral hygiene practices among Science and Non-science University students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted through a questionnaire that contained sociodemographic information, questions about oral health knowledge (OHK) assessed on Likert scale (strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree). Questions about dental caries, teeth extracted due to caries, and filled teeth while the fourth section questions were about oral hygiene practices (OHP). Data were processed using SPSS (version 21) with significance level of p≤0.050. Results: Four hundred (400) students participated in current study in which 190 students were from science (medicine and pharmacy) and 210 from non-science (education and arts) colleges. Male and female ratio were 185(46.3%) and 215(53.8%) respectively. Overall, oral health knowledge status was demonstrated as non-significant by both science and non-science students except for question regarding transmission of dental caries. A significant difference was observed between gender (p=0.016) for all questions except question 2 (bacteria is the cause of tooth decay). In addition, a significant difference were observed between urban and rural students (p=0.037) for question 2. No significant difference were observed for decayed, extracted teeth and oral hygiene practices between science and non-science students.. Conclusion: Statistically no significant difference in status of knowledge, decayed and missing teeth and oral hygiene practices was observed between science and non-science students, except for filled teeth.
