This paper attempts to describe several general educational potentials that are assumed to facilitate adequate pedagogical response to the recent economic and social paradigm shifts that have resulted in marked changes in the requirements for the labour force on the global job market. The article describes the most powerful pedagogical trends of the 20th century, selectively concentrating on the assessment of their contribution to and share in the preparation of the inevitably forthcoming paradigm shift in education.Topic related issues of language teaching in an academic setting are then discussed, focusing particularily on English for Specific Purposes, followed by a more thorough analysis of the major types of ESP syllabi. This analysis attempts to identify those properties that empower ESP teaching to give a more sophisticated answer (as compared to general language teaching) to issues raised by the appearance of new trends and needs in theglobal job market. The paper offers conclusions for consideration as to the responsibility of language teachers and strategy makers in higher education, acting in an intercultural environment.

Palavras-chaveAteli vazio. In recent years, with the historiographic revisions on the modernist approach, researchers have valued the nineteenth-century production and consequently opened the field to new possibilities of studying art in the early 1900s. The present article intends to contribute to this research, proposing a reading beyond the aesthetic transformations that occurred in this period, taking as a starting point the representations of the empty studio. Thus, considering the empty studio a theme par excellence in 19th century art, we investigate its persistence in the 20th century despite the paradigm shifts in painting. To this end, we gathered some works from approximately 1880 to 1950, in which we observed aspects about the position of the artist as a professional, the conception of art and the reality that surrounds them. Keywords:Empty studio. 19th and 20th centuries. This article concerns itself with the development of a missional ecclesiology and the practices that may accept the challenge of conducting pastoral ministry in the context of South African, middleclass congregations adapting to a rapidly changing, post-apartheid environment. Some practical theological perspectives on pastoral counselling are investigated, whilst Narrative Therapy is explored as an emerging theory of deconstruction to enable the facilitating of congregational change towards a missional understanding of church life in local communities. Subsequently, the theological paradigm of missional ecclesiology is investigated before drawing the broad lines of a theory for pastoral ministry within missional ecclesiology.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: In this article, a missional base theory is proposed for pastoral counselling, consisting of interdisciplinary insights gained from the fields of Missiology, Practical Theology, Narrative Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The implications of this proposal for the development of a missional pastoral theory focus on the following three aspects: re-establishing pastoral identity: exploring Christ pastoral development: intentional faith formation pastoral ministry: enabling Christ-centred lives. In such a missional pastoral theory four practices should be operationalised: first of all, a cognitive approach to increasing knowledge of the biblical narrative is necessary. This provides the hermeneutical skills necessary to enable people to internalise the biblical ethics and character traits ascribed to the Christian life. Secondly, a pastoral theory needs to pay close attention to development of emotional intelligence. Thirdly, this should be done in the context of small groups, where the focus falls on the personality development of members. Finally, missional pastoral theory should also include the acquisition of life coaching skills, where leaders can be adequately mentored in their roles as coaches of nonequipped people. In taking the research to a further level of normative reflection, attention should be turned to developing specific areas of pastoral care: formal clinical education and subsequent accreditation of pastors (in the South African context pastoral care is not legally recognised as a valid area of psychological therapy) specifically pertaining to Narrative Therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy basic counselling skills for non-theologically trained congregational leaders qualitative and quantitative research methods organisational theory for congregational ministry crisis counselling skills for congregation members serving in a community context marriage and family therapy emotional intelligence as outcome of a spiritual growth cycle leadership development and personality assessment personal growth by confronting and crossing emotional and cultural boundaries.

The aim of this article is to illuminate the political dimensions of modern waste disposal practices by comparing the representation of garbage, filth, hygiene, health and efficiency during the emergence of the modern kitchen at the beginning of the 20th century with today’s discourse of ecology, recycling and global responsibility. At issue will be mechanisms of identifying, collecting and handling trash in modern homes as well as the implied hierarchical order of decay and growth, that are set in very specific contexts of normalization and deviance. With regard to the notion of an ‘aesthetic regime’ as developed by Jacques Rancière, an assumption the paper both works with and tries to make plausible is that political matters not only emerge in the realm of deliberate action and public debate, but are fundamentally played out in the realm of sensual perception, notably through everyday ways of seeing as embedded in mundane practice and discourse.

In the light of a number of paradigm shifts that have taken place in practical theological methodology, this article proposes an integrative approach that takes the fundamental role of embodiment into account. A brief discussion of the theological understanding of embodiment is followed by a reflection on certain liturgical implications, inter alia liturgical embodiment as immediate participation; as multi-sensory interpretative act; and as broken presence and celebrated absence.

A graduate-level course in dysphagia is an integral part of the graduate curriculum in speech-language pathology. There are many challenges to meeting the needs of current graduate student clinicians, thus requiring the instructor to explore alternatives. These challenges, suggested paradigm shifts, and potential available solutions are explored. Current trends, lack of evidence for current methods, and the variety of approaches to teaching the dysphagia course are presented.
