Reform in the South African healthcare and educational system were characterized by the ideals that the country needs to produce independent, critical thinkers. Nurses need to cope with diversity in a more creative way, defining their role in a complex, uncertain, rapidly changing health care environment. Quality clinical judgement is therefore imperative as an identified characteristic of newly qualified professional nurses. The objective of this study was to explore and describe clinical judgement through various data sources and review of literature to clarify the meaning and promote a common understanding through formulating the characteristics and developing a connotative (theoretical) definition of the concept. An explorative, descriptive qualitative design was used to discover the complexity and meaning of the phenomenon. Multiple data sources and search strategies were used, for the time frame 1982—2013. A concept analysis was used to arrive at a theoretical definition of the concept of ‘clinical judgement’ as a complex cognitive skill to evaluate patient needs, adaption of current treatment protocols as well as new treatment strategies, prevention of adverse side effects through being proactive rather than reactive within the clinical nursing environment. The findings emphasized clinical judgement as skill within the clinical nursing environment, thereby improving autonomous and accountable nursing care. These findings will assist nurse leaders and clinical nurse educators in developing a teaching-learning strategy to promote clinical judgement in undergraduate nursing students, thereby contributing to the quality of nursing care.

Holistic nursing care is widely advocated and is espoused in the philosophy of the South African Nursing Council. This concept is unclear, variously interpreted and poorly understood in paediatric nursing. This study was undertaken to examine the meaning of holistic nursing care and to develop a framework for holistic nursing care, which can be utilised in nurse education settings and in clinical nursing practice in the context of paediatric nursing. A qualitative, interpretive, explorative and contextual research design was used. An evolutionary concept analysis was undertaken to clarify the concept “holistic nursing care” in paediatric nursing in three Johannesburg hospitals. Rodgers’ (1989, 2000) evolutionary method was utilised to analyse the concept.

Although the concept ‘spiritual nursing care’ has its roots in the history of the nursing profession, many nurses in practice have difficulty integrating the concept into practice. There is an ongoing debate in the empirical literature about its definition, clarity and application in nursing practice. The study aimed to develop an operational definition of the concept and its application in clinical practice. A qualitative study was conducted to explore and describe how professional nurses render spiritual nursing care. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit the sample. Individual and focus group interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Trustworthiness was ensured through strategies of truth value, applicability, consistency and neutrality. Data were analysed using the NUD*IST power version 4 software, constant comparison, open, axial and selective coding. Tech’s eight steps of analysis were also used, which led to the emergence of themes, categories and sub-categories. Concept analysis was conducted through a comprehensive literature review and as a result ‘caring presence’ was identified as the core variable from which all the other characteristics of spiritual nursing care arise. An operational definition of spiritual nursing care based on the findings was that humane care is demonstrated by showing caring presence, respect and concern for meeting the needs not only of the body and mind of patients, but also their spiritual needs of hope and meaning in the midst of health crisis, which demand equal attention for optimal care from both religious and nonreligious nurses.

The article presents a theoretical–methodological proposal to research movements and its connections based on the associations they establish. The first investigation focuses on the transformations of the South African Landless People’s Movement, the second on interactions between Brazilian rural movements and the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform, the third focuses on the transnational ties of the Brazilian National Confederation of Agricultural Workers. We produce an ontological definition of movements and the state as collectives whose existence is defined by continuous assemblages of heterogeneous and unstable elements. Those collectives are not enclosed analytical units, but contingent and contextual. Methodologically, we suggest the observation of the processes in the long term to grasp the continuous constructions of those collectives, even before they reach public expression. Controversies are analytical categories for understanding which elements allow things to take the course we analyze.

Higher cognitive skills are essential competencies for nurses joining the technologically and increasingly complex health care environment to provide safe and effective nursing care. Educators and clinical facilitators have recognised that newly qualified nurses do not meet the expectations for entry level clinical judgement and are held accountable for finding adequate learning experiences as preparation for such practice demands. An explorative and descriptive qualitative design was followed in this study to reach an understanding of clinical judgement in the clinical nursing environment from the perspective of professional nurses. Eleven professional nurses (n = 11) working at primary health care clinics, public and private hospitals participated voluntarily. Data was collected by means of the “World Cafe” method, incorporating a combination of techniques such as interviewing, discussions, drawings, narratives and reflection. The focus was on professional nurses' knowledge of the meaning of clinical judgement and factors influencing the development of clinical judgement in the clinical environment. Qualitative thematic content analysis principles were applied during data analysis. The findings were integrated with the relevant literature to culminate in conclusions that should add to the knowledge base of clinical judgement as an essential skill for improving autonomous and accountable nursing care.

Summary The South African Committee for Stratigraphy (SACS) is the official body in South Africa which regulates the nomenclature and definition of lithostratigraphic and lithodemic rock units, unconsolidated deposits and soils. The robust framework set in the existing stratigraphic code and guide for publication by the Council for Geoscience (CGS) have for many years provided leadership in this field, but there are a number of aspects in need of reconsideration. One example is the non-compliance of our nomenclature for high-grade supracrustal rocks with international (and South African) stratigraphic codes and another is manuscript format changes necessitated by publishing SACS descriptions in the SAJG. Any stratigraphic code is a living document that should be able to accommodate changing views and circumstances. This review provides a consensus opinion from experts on how to deal with changing needs.

Drawing on the linguistic landscape material of modified road traffic signs in different areas of South Africa, the article illustrates how modified traffic road signs continue to have situated contextual meanings regardless of altered physical placement or content. Drawing on semiotic repurposing this article argues for an extended definition of situated semiotics that takes into account repurposed signs. A fluid interpretation of ‘situatedness' will broaden the scope of what is perceived as situated semiotics and discourage the use of delinquent categories such as ‘transgressive' semiotics for ‘out of place' semiotics.

BACKGROUND: There is robust literature on spirituality in nursing. Despite the unique needs of those with serious mental illness, there has been little exploration of spirituality in the context of nursing care for this population. Lacking a well-defined concept of spirituality in psychiatric care, mental health nurses often struggle to provide optimal, holistic care. AIMS: The aim of this concept analysis was to review definitions and descriptions of spirituality in the psychiatric nursing literature to synthesize a usable definition to inform practice and provide a basis for future study. METHOD: Beth Rodgers’s evolutionary concept analysis method was followed to inductively derive a definition of spirituality in psychiatric nursing care. Steps included identification of the concept, setting, and sample; synthesis of key attributes, antecedents, and consequences from the literature; and a discussion of implications. A search in the psychiatric nursing literature (1998-2019) included literature reviews, case studies, concept analyses, qualitative interview studies, and quantitative survey research. RESULTS: Spirituality in psychiatric nursing was defined by attributes of a search for life meaning and purpose and a sense of connectedness. Spirituality in the practice of psychiatric nursing was a result of value-influenced thinking and a capability for interaction with others. Consequences included consolation and positive or negative coping. CONCLUSIONS: A clearly defined concept of spirituality in psychiatric nursing can provide a basis for clinical confidence for nurses in identifying patient spiritual needs and choosing appropriate interventions to support those needs.
