HEALTH EDUCATION — THE NEED TO MAKE IT WORK It is increasingly apparent that the major health problems in the world today — ranging from malnutrition and communicable diseases; many forms of mental ill-health and cardiac conditions; accidents and alcoholism, are primarily attributable to unsatisfactory living conditions, lack of knowledge and harmful practices on the part of individuals, families and communities. Advances in the field of science and technology can do no more towards the promotion of the health of the population unless it is accompanied by fundamental changes in the way of life and behaviour patterns of the people themselves.

Spirituality and a new religious awakening, are seen by religious elites as a stage of religious directness in carrying out religious traditions and rituals. New civilizations can instead be a threat to conventional religious traditions and rituals. Without the willingness of religious elites to criticize and re-interpret conventional ritual traditions and patterns, the functions of the world's major religions could fade. The world's major religions are increasingly alienated from the objective world and awareness of the lives of the people and their people. It seems that there will be a new form of religion or a new religion that is completely different from the tradition of religious rituals that have been carried out by the major religions of the world. While the religious elite is still attached to classical religious interpretations. But on the other hand, the emergence of modern society, encouraging the argument of secularization is part of modernization. The values underlying socio-political and economic relations also appear to be beginning to enter an irregular stage, when viewed conventionally, the spiritulitas of global civilization, rather than lies in the format of values, traditional systems and structures or modern rationality. New civilizations in social systems and Science and Technology (SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY) began to be directed at a more intuitive spirituality stage. Then came the act of social piety that proved impartiality over the duafa wal mustad'afin, workers and the poor who were oppressed by the economic system. The emergence of the term left theology only wants to explain about righteousness and belief based on the ability to perform acts of liberation of the proletariat. This action is not only done after the reality of the proletariat appears, but creates a social and economic system that has impartiality towards the proletariat.Keywords: Spirituality, Secularization, Social Piety

Abstract– Most of the people in the district of Sungai Kunyit are engaged in the business of seafood including udang ebi. Udang ebi's monthly production in this district reached 5000 kg. Although the potential of udang ebi processing in Sungai Kunyit dsitrict is quite large, it's benefits still not improve the lives and welfare of the local fishermen. The low of education level may directly affect welfare of society that in general are still categorized as underprivileged families. Partners in this community service activities are the drying group of udang ebi in the territory of Sungai Kunyit district. The partners were Usaha Bahari Terpadu and Karya Bersama. These drying groups of udang ebi are generally running their business still use the traditional way by relying on the natural sunlight for drying udang ebi catches. So that during the rainy season, where the sun shines not too good and often cloudy, their income declined up to 40%. The above problem encouraged the team Community Services in the Sungai Kunyit district to conduct socialization and pilot project in construction drying oven for udang-ebi. Through this science and technology for Society (Ibm) program funded by Directorate of Research and Community Service (DP2M), it is expected to give significant effect on improvement in live and welfare of the local fishermen, especially drying group of udang-ebi, and finally increases the health, education and economic levels of society in general. The Tiv people right from the time of old possessed a handsome knowledge about their origin, way of life or traditions, science and technology including means of cultivating crops and ways of trapping or killing animals for food, medicinal uses of different plants, methods of making shelters to lay their heads and tactics of making cloths to cover their nakedness among others in a well-defined manner. Essentially, the knowledge the people possessed, which culminated into the Tiv Indigenous Knowledge (TIK) was orally transferred from one descent to another for documentation and continuity. However, the interplay of colonialism, Christian religion and intellectual property laws, constituted factors militating against the development of this crucial indigenous knowledge. This chapter therefore, describes the Tiv indigenous knowledge and the factors militating against it as well as attempt to figure out strategies that could be useful in curtailing these problems.

Our world has numerous cultures. It represents the nation’s way of life and the values they have. It is the typical of every nation to try its best to protect its culture and colure other nations in its own culture. Due to such intentions there is always a war between these nations to ruin the culture of another and to make its culture prominent everywhere, however the world doesn’t allow another culture to enter in, by force. It needs that the ruler culture must have high values to admit others to follow it. If we have an analytical study of various cultures, we can find that there were many cultures that tried to dominate the entire world but due to many faults in them, they were not accepted by human being. It was only Islamic culture that was accepted whole heartedly by all. Because it was the first culture that brought prosperity to the people. It gave them recognition and strengthened them. The cultural values that are covered in the way of life is manifested in men’s activities. The cultural values themselves are symbolized through the proverbs. As the expression, the proverb is basically the principle guideline of behavior. Within the proverb is contained a profound experience of the world view as well as the life wisdom that is tightly integrated to the society to which the language belongs. The proverb - known as misil-masal, liat daliat and sukat sarang - is still well recorded and used by Kei community as Kei language speaker.  The people who live in the coastal area especially at the Kei Besar Island are generally the fishermen and farmers.  However, in this research it will  focus on the Kei Besar people’s view in managing their coastal area through the proverbs they use. The uses of words as the expression is closely related to the sea and their way of life especially in connected with fish and boat.  The proverbs which are used by the people in Kei is the summary of their way of thinking about the values of life.  The cultural values in these proverbs are firmness, strength, simplicity, mutual assistance, respect for the elders and leaders, wisdom, thinking before doing, and obedience.<br /><br />Keywords: Nilai Budaya, Peribahasa, Wilayah Pesisir<br /><br />

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the major health problems in the world and Indonesia. The prevalence is more increasing and also shows the trend of events is shifting to young age. Diabetes mellitus treatment requires high costs and also a lifetime. Most of the people of Indonesia still use traditional methods of treatment, especially herbs from various biological substances that are available in the environment. Undur-undur (myrmeleon sp.) is believed to have the effect of anti-hyperglycemia, and also anti-viscosity. The aim of this study was to determine anti-hyperglycemia and anti-viscosity of myrmeleon sp. extract in diabetic rats. The design of study is randomized experiment. Diabetic rats were induced by streptozocin 100mg/ kg BW intraperitoneal. Fifty rats were divided into 2 groups administered by Myrmeleon sp. extract dose 0,01ml/ 200 gram BW (100%) and 0,005ml/ 200 gram BW (50%). Myrmeleon sp. shows the effect of anti-hyperglycemic and anti-viscosity in diabetic rats. There was a difference between 50% and 100% doses. The effect of anti-hyperglycemia and anti-viscosity occurs after the second day. Conclusion: the extract of myrmeleon sp. could be considered as one of the traditional treatments of diabetic patients.

The British Birth Cohort Study (BCS70) is a cohort study which follows all the people born in England, Scotland and Wales in the week of 5–11 April 1970. The data described here were from the postal questionnaires returned by 2181 young women aged between 16 and 16½ in 1986. Thirty-nine per cent of the respondents had never smoked, 39% had smoked at some time and 22% were regular smokers. Most of the respondents indicated that they had one or more of the following symptoms associated with menstruation: pain, depression, irritability, headaches, cramps. Analysis of the data showed that regular smokers were significantly more likely than those who had never smoked to have all these symptoms. Whilst the percentage of ‘sometime smokers’ experiencing pain, depression and headaches fell between smokers and ‘never-smokers’, the percentage experiencing unpleasant symptoms in general, irritability and cramps was the same as for regular smokers. If causality could be demonstrated, messages about immediate health problems such as these might be more powerful health education to young women than information about long-term risks.
