A taxonomic revision of the southern African native and naturalized species of Silene L. (Caryophyllaceae)

The native and naturalized species of Silene L. in southern Africa are reviewed, with full synonomy and the description of two new species from the West Coast of Western Cape. Eight native species and three naturalized species are recognized, including the first identification in southern Africa of the Mediterranean S. nocturna L. The identity of S. aethiopica Burm., which has remained unknown since its description, is established and is found to be the oldest name for S. clandestina Jacq. Patterns of morphological variation within each species are discussed and subspecies are recognized for geographically segregated groups of populations that are ± morphologically diagnosable. The following new names or combinations are made among the southern African taxa: S. aethiopica subsp. longiflora; S. burchellii subsp. modesta, subsp. multiflora, and subsp. pilosellifolia; S. crassifolia subsp. primuliflora; S. saldanhensis; S. rigens; and S. undulata subsp. polyantha. Each taxon is described, with information on ecology and distribution, and most species are illustrated, including SEM micrographs of the seeds.

This study is a revision of the poorly known genus Pseudochitinopoma Zibrowius, 1969 (Annelida, Serpulidae), erected for Hyalopomatopsis occidentalis Bush, 1905 from the West Coast of North America. Subsequently, an unnamed Pseudochitinopoma sp. nov. from the Seychelles (ten Hove 1994) (described herein as P. amirantensis sp. nov.) and P. pavimentata Nishi, 1999 were added to the genus. Ficopomatus capensis Day, 1961 is herein referred to Pseudochitinopoma, based on examination of the type material. Finally, Pseudochitinopoma beneliahuae sp. nov. was described from Western Australia and the Red Sea. Reproductive patterns and phylogenetic affinities of Pseudochitinopoma spp. are discussed.

The Brazilian land planarians Cratera crioula, C. joia, Geoplana hina, and G. taxiarcha (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Geoplanidae) are revised taxonomically from type material and additional specimens. Geoplana hina sensu Carbayo et al. (2013) was found to be an undescribed species and therefore is described and named as Cratera picuia sp. n. A new species of the genus is also described and named as Cratera arucuia sp. n. G. hina and G. taxiarcha are transferred to Cratera. The most remarkable morphological feature of Cratera—a dilated terminal portion of the ejaculatory duct—is either absent, inconspicuous, or variable in C. hina, C. joia, C. picuia sp. n., and C. arucuia sp. n. Based on the monophyletic status of Cratera inferred elsewhere, an emendation of the genus is here proposed to encompass the morphological variation observed in the genus.

Two new deep-living species of the genus Bargmannia (Siphonophorae, Physonectae, Pyrostephidae) are described based, almost exclusively, on the nectophores of single specimens collected by ROVs off the west coast of California. The nectophores of B. stenotes sp. nov. were relatively small, up to 11.4 mm in length and, in the preserved condition had very narrow nectosacs. There was a marked bend in the distal part of the preserved nectophore, resulting in the ostium opening upwards. The mature nectophores of B. profunda sp. nov. were almost twice as long as those of B. stenotes and were characterised by the fact that the lower lateral ridges did not join, distally, with the meso-lateral ones. This feature also was present in smaller nectophores of B. amoena but those of B. stenotes, at that stage, did not have a mouth-plate.

Occigamasus n. gen., O. lindquisti n. sp. and O. makarovae n. sp. from Vancouver Island (Canada) and Oregon (U.S.A.) are described. Five other new species and their sites are noted but not enough specimens were available for adequate descriptions. Cycetogamasus californicus (Banks) sensu Hennessey and Farrier, 1988 is transferred to Occigamasus as a new combination.

Two new species with spinose spores are described from the Western Cape.  F. elsieae Perold is quite a large plant, generally with almost entire leaves, its spores on the distal face having relatively few, rather coarse spines, which often appear broken and are occasionally linked to form abbreviated ridges.  F. spinosa Perold is a smallish plant with irregularly lobed leaves, its spores on the distal face having numerous, fine spines, which sometimes coalesce to form short ridges. A table which com­pares F. glenii Perold,  F. leucoxantha Lehm. and F. montaguensis S.W.Arnell with the two new species, is supplied.

A taxonomic account is given of the monotypic genus Maurocenia Mill. Maurocenia frangula Mill, has a restricted range and is endemic to the Cape Peninsula and the West Coast National Park. Western Cape. Maurocenia frangularia (L.)Mill., the species name and author citation widely used in the past, is incorrect. It is characterized by. among others, pendulous ovules and gynodioecy, rare states in the Celastraceae. Maurocenia is apparently most closely related to the southern African genus Lauridia Eckl. Zeyh.

A new genus Loveninema gen. n., with two new species L. tubulosa gen. n., sp. n. and L. unicornis gen. n., sp. n. is de-scribed from bottom sediments collected in Skagerrak off the west coast of Sweden. Loveninema gen. n. is unique amongother genera of Plectida by possessing a midventral labial projection located on the ventral edge of the oral opening andprotruding anteriorly. Other diagnostic characters include: sclerotised labial framework in the shape of a conoid ring withthree projections extending posteriorly: one mid-dorsal, one left-subventral and one right-subventral; papilliform outer la-bial and cephalic sensilla; amphidial fovea a transverse slit located anterior to cephalic sensilla bases; excretory pore open-ing on the ventral side of the labial region; pharynx uniformly muscular, cylindrical; female reproductive systemdidelphic, amphidelphic; male reproductive system monorchic, with reflexed testis; spicules present; gubernaculum pres-ent or absent; either alveolar or tubular supplements present in males, absent in females; caudal glands and spinneret pres-ent. L. tubulosa gen. n., sp. n. is particularly characterised by the 0.66–1.12 mm long body; short midventral labialprojection; straight vagina without sclerotisations; male without alveolar and with 12–15 tubular supplements, 15.0–21.5µm long spicules, and with gubernaculum. L. unicornis gen. n., sp. n. is particularly characterised by the 0.65–0.98 mmlong body; long midventral labial projection; straight vagina without sclerotisations; male with up to 20 alveolar and without tubular supplements, 11.5–14.0 µm long spicules, and without gubernaculum.

Two new species of hydroid, Sarsia pinforma and Sarsia striata, Family Corynidae, have been found near Oban, west coast of Scotland. Their life-histories have been worked out and their medusae have been reared to maturity in the laboratory. Medusae of striata have also been found in the sea and hydroids have been reared from them. The hydroids and the stages of development of the medusae are fully described and figured, with observations on habits and comparisons with other species of Sarsia. Observations on the development of the gonophores of Sarsia occulta and comments on Sarsia densa are added.

This paper examines the alpha level taxonomy of the genus Holohalaelurus Fowler 1934 (Chondrichthyes: Carcharhiniformes: Scyliorhinidae), which is endemic to southern and east Africa. A novel species identification key is presented for Holohalaelurus, and a comprehensive review of the taxonomy (including type material and synonyms) and distribution of all taxa is presented. Holohalaelurus regani (Gilchrist 1922) is restricted to southern Africa and the taxa that occur in tropical east Africa are discrete taxonomic units, resulting in the resurrection of H. melanostigma Norman 1939, and two new species, which are described here. Holohalaelurus polystigma (Regan 1921) is shown to be a junior synonym of H. punctatus (Gilchrist 1914), the validity of the type series for H. regani is discussed, and neotypes are designated for H. regani and H. punctatus. The genus Holohalaelurus contains the contemporary taxa H. punctatus (Gilchrist 1914), H. regani (Gilchrist 1922), H. melanostigma Norman 1939, H. favus sp. nov., and H. grennian sp. nov.
