Apatite fission-track data from 16 sedimentary and crystalline rock samples indicate rapid regional Early Eocene denudation within the onshore Beaufort–Mackenzie region of northwestern Canada. Rocks exposed in the area of the Big Fish River, Northwest Territories, cooled rapidly from paleotemperatures of >80–110 °C to <6 0°C at ca. 56 ± 2 Ma, probably in response to kilometre-scale denudation associated with regional structuring. The data suggest the region experienced a geothermal gradient of ~28 °C/km prior to rapid cooling, with ~2.7 km of section having been removed from the top of the exposed section in the Moose Channel Formation and ~3.8 km from the top of the exposed Cuesta Creek Member. Farther to the west, rocks exposed in the headwaters of the Blow River in the Barn Mountains, Yukon Territories, were exposed to paleotemperatures above 110 °C in the Late Paleocene prior to rapid cooling from these elevated paleotemperatures due to kilometre-scale denudation at ca. 56 ± 2 Ma. Exposure of these samples at the surface today requires that a minimum of ~3.8 km of denudation occurred since they began cooling below ~110 °C. The apatite analyses indicate that rocks exposed in the northern Yukon and Northwest Territories experienced rapid cooling during the Early Eocene in response to kilometre-scale denudation, associated with early Tertiary folding and thrusting in the northern Cordillera. Early Eocene cooling–uplift ages for onshore sections are slightly older than the Middle Eocene ages previously documented for the adjacent offshore foldbelt and suggest that the deformation progressed toward the foreland of the foldbelt through time.

This article explores embodied encounters with the Sea Empress oil spill of 1996 and their representation in oral narratives. Through a close reading of the personal testimonies collected in the Sea Empress Project archive, I examine the relationship between intense sensory experiences of environmental change and everyday interpretations of the disaster and its legacy. The art­icle first outlines the ways in which this collection of voices reveals sensory memories, embodied affects and narrative choices to be deeply entwined in oral representations of the spill, disclosing a ‘sensory event’ that created a powerful awareness of both environmental surroundings and their relationship to everyday social processes. Then, reading these narratives against-the-grain, I argue that narrators’ accounts tell a paradoxical story of a disaster that most now wish to forget, and reveal an ambivalent legacy of environmental change that is similarly consigned to the past. Finally, I relate this social forgetting of the Sea Empress to the wider history of environmental consciousness in modern Britain.

Two alkaline igneous complexes and three lines of diatreme breccias were emplaced in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake during the lower Proterozoic. Field relationships suggest that those rocks are broadly cogenetic and were emplaced about 2.1 Ga ago.One of the intrusions, the Easter Island dyke, was rotated subsequent to emplacement such that both top and bottom are now exposed. Field and petrographic data are indicative of progressive differentiation along (i.e., up) the dyke and are substantiated by chemical data. The differentiation history of the early gabbros of the Blachford Lake complex is similar. Late differentiates of both complexes closely resemble the igneous matrices of the breccias and petrographic and chemical data support the proposal of cogenesis and contemporaneity.The field data show that there was a period of significant faulting and concomitant alkaline igneous activity in the East Arm area in the lower Proterozoic.

This chapter addresses recent research that identifies migration as a specific form of human movement in which social groups move into new social contexts. Migration is inherently disruptive to people’s lives, and it occurs embedded within political, economic, or social processes that make it highly context-specific. I discuss the history of theory in migration research, including recent shifts away from a concern with ethnicity in favour of communities of practice. Late Mesoamerica is a data-rich environment for the study of migration within its social context. The Classic period saw regional political systems that extended their reach economically or militarily and frequently had a demographic component. The widespread disruption of the Epiclassic or Terminal Classic periods included environmental change, political collapse, and a major reorganization of the social landscape. The Postclassic witnessed the re-emergence of complex societies claiming descent from migrant populations. The contributions to this volume come from many different disciplines and assess the timing, causes, perceptions, and impacts of migrations across a variety of social contexts. Political disruption, environmental change, and migration are frequently interrelated in ways reminiscent of our world today.

Loess deposition within the Loess Plateau of China records the history of environmental change over the last 2.5 Myr. Loess-paleosol sequences of the last 10 ka, which have preserved information of global climate change, relate closely to human occupation of the area. Hence, studies of the deposition and development of Holocene loess are significant for studying environmental change and problems associated with engineering geology. We present here stratigraphic relations among four profiles from the south, west and center of the Loess Plateau. On the basis of 14C radiometric and AMS dates of organic material extracted from the paleosols, together with magnetic susceptibility measurements down each profile, we discuss Holocene stratigraphic divisions within the Loess Plateau, and suggest that the Holocene optimum, characterized by paleosol complexes, occurred between 10 and 5 ka bp. From 5 ka BP to the present, neoglacial activity is characterized by recently deposited loess.

ABSTRACTThis paper reviews the evidence for environmental change during the Lateglacial period (c.14.7–11.7 ka), perhaps the most intensively studied episode in the Quaternary history of Scotland. It considers first the stratigraphic subdivision and nomenclature of the Lateglacial, before proceeding to a discussion of the various lines of proxy evidence that have been used to reconstruct the spatial and temporal patterns of environmental change during this time period. These include pollen and plant macrofossil data; coleopteran and chironomid records; diatom data; stable isotope and geochemical records; and evidence for human activity. The paper then considers the principal methods that have been employed to date and correlate Lateglacial events: radiocarbon dating; surface exposure dating; varve chronology; and tephrochronology. This is followed by an examination of the constraints imposed on environmental reconstructions, an account of the ways in which the evidence can be employed in the development of an event stratigraphy for the Lateglacial in Scotland, and a proposal for a provisional Lateglacial type sequence (stratotype) at Whitrig Bog in SE Scotland. Emphasis is placed throughout on the potential linkages between the Scottish records and the isotopic signal in the Greenland ice cores, which forms the stratigraphic template for the N Atlantic region. The paper concludes with a discussion of the strategies and approaches that should underpin future research programmes on Lateglacial environmental change in Scotland.

History and archaeology have a well-established engagement with issues of premodern societal development and the interaction between physical and cultural environments; together, they offer a holistic view that can generate insights into the nature of cultural resilience and adaptation, as well as responses to catastrophe. Grasping the challenges that climate change presents and evolving appropriate policies that promote and support mitigation and adaptation requires not only an understanding of the science and the contemporary politics, but also an understanding of the history of the societies affected and in particular of their cultural logic. But whereas archaeologists have developed productive links with the paleosciences, historians have, on the whole, remained muted voices in the debate until recently. Here, we suggest several ways in which a consilience between the historical sciences and the natural sciences, including attention to even distant historical pasts, can deepen contemporary understanding of environmental change and its effects on human societies.
