Thickness and distribution of Late- and Post-glacial sediments in an Eastern Jutland valley system have been mapped, and their sedimentogenetic and diagenetic relations have been studied. The chemical and sedimentological methods used are discussed in detail. Post-glacial marine sediments formed in a tidal fjord environment are the most important deposits in the area, and it is shown that river supplies of freshwater control the salinity of the environment and were responsible for the rather high content of allochthonous material in the sediment. The marine sediments rest on Late-glacial sand, whose surface topography indicates that the valleys were formed by subglacial erosion. Local occurrences of dead ice were present at least until the Littorina sea (Atlantic) transgression. Depth conditions for Early Post-glacial peat are used to estimate the groundwater level and the course of the river Gudenå in the Continental Period. Sedimentary facies in the Atlantic Littorina sea are discussed, including salinity, tidal activity, water depth, nutrient conditions, and exchange of stagnant bottom water from the deepest parts of the fjord area. The sequence seems to have been influenced only by minor syndiagenetic and weathering processes.With the intention of providing supplementary information to that obtained from mapping of the Post-glacial sediments of the region 161 electric soundings have been carried out in the Randers fjord area. The specific resistivity of the sediments has been determined and the principle limitations of the methods applied have been investigated. Interpretation of the electric soundings has been done using a new system of computer programs. Maps showing the thickness relationships and variations in specific resistivity in the uppermost, largely Post-glacial deposits in the area have been prepared, and a map showing the location of the surface of the Danian limestone and occurrence of Tertiary clay is also presented.

Abstract This note reports the geological contexts and radiocarbon and calibrated ages of whalebone and bivalve recovered from emerged deglacial marine sediments at Trout River, Newfoundland (49°28.6’ N, 58°07’ W). The rate of sea-level fall is calculated for the first deglacial millennium, and discrepancies are noted between calibrated ages of bone and shell.

The Baltic Sea is an ideal natural laboratory to study the methane cycle in the framework of diagenetic processes. In this paper we present preliminary geological mapping results from project Baltic Gas, a research project with the overall aim to contribute to the development of a scientific basis for long term sustainable use and protection of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The Baltic Sea is a marginal sea with a strong permanent haline stratification, which leads to oxygen-poor bottom waters, and which is sometimes interrupted by oxygen- rich saltwater flowing in from the North Sea. The history of the Baltic Sea has resulted in deposition of organic-rich Holocene marine sediments that overlie glacial, late-glacial and early Holocene organic-poor sediments.

A lithostratigraphic model of Weichselian tills and inter-till deposits in Denmark is erected. Deposits comprise 1) Till, other diamicts and meltwater sediments deposited during glaciated stadials and 2) Interstadial and stadial fluvial, lacustrine and marine sediments deposited under climatic ameliorations and ice free conditions. Stratigraphic successions are correlated using lithological and palaeoecological evidence and they are linked to the marine sequences in northern Denmark named the Skærumhede series. Three stadials with one or more glaciation events succeeding Eemian interglacial conditions have been recognized. The oldest, Ristinge stadial, is most likely from the early Middle Weichselian situated between the Odderade and Moershoofd interstadials. It comprises The Ristinge, Ringshøj and Lovns tills of Baltic origin is found in the eastern and central parts of Denmark. The post-Hengelo, Klintholm stadial from the late Middle Weichselian, is represented by the Baltic Klintholm till found in the easternmost part of the country and possibly the Esrum diamicton in the buried Esrum valley belong to this stadial. The post-Sandnes interstadial, Late Weichselian Jylland stadial comprise the Kattegat Till of Norwegian provenance is found in northern Denmark. It is followed by the Mid Danish, Grenå, Fårup, Store Klinthøj, Himmerland tills of middle Swedish origin, and deposited by the ice-stream which reached the Main Stationary Line from northeasterly directions. The East Jylland and North Sjælland tills of respectively Baltic and Swedish provenance overlie the former tills in eastern Denmark. These are succeeded by the Bælthav Till of Baltic origin which is confined to the Danish islands. Late glacial deposits from the Bølling-Allerød oscillation comprises the upper boundary for Weichselian deposits. The compilation of the stratigraphic model serves the purpose of combining and bringing forward regional and local stratigraphic studies from the past decades and to set up a frame-work for dating the age and duration individual glaciation events and interstadials.

ABSTRACT An unusual large teeth, finding from time to time in marine sediments of Muschelkalk, Silesia, Poland indicate the superpredators occurrence. According to size and morphological features the teeth are similar to archosaurs or giant marine reptiles.
