Effect of Compost on the Distribution of Copper in Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil

Pot experiments were carried out to study the effect of compost application amount on the distribution of copper in heavy metal contaminated soil. The results showed that the total Cu content reduced 11.54%, 11.60%, 22.02%, 25.27%, 7.08% and 3.65% after the amendment of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 g/kg compost to soil with Brassica juncea, respectively. The amount of water-soluble fraction had no correlation with the compost application amount. However, compost amendment decreased the proportion of Cu in the exchangeable and residual fractions, and increased the percentage of Cu in the carbonate bound, Fe-Mn oxide bound and organic-bound Cu. Furthermore, though the mobility factor of Cu decreased slightly only from 16.64% to 16.27-16.52% due to the addition of compost, the addition of compost to soil can immobilize the heavy metal through bound to organic matter and therefore, lowered their mobility and their phytotoxicity.

Located in Teluk Bayur bay the port is of the five biggest and busiest ports in Indonesia. High sea transportation activities and anthropogenic activities may lead to heavy metal pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of Pb and Cu metals, in seagrass (Sargassum sp.) and to analyze the feasibility of consuming Sargassum sp. The method used in this study is a survey method, by analyzing heavy metal at Laboratory Pekerjaan Umum of Riau Province. The water quality temperatures 30-31oC, and salinity of 30-31 ppt, appeared curred velocity 0.06-0.08 m/sec, water transparency 100% with a depth of ± 1 m and pH 7. Pb concentrations the highest is 2.9367 μg/g at stations close to the port and the lowest is 2.2506 μg/g at stations close to tourist areas, and the concentration of Cu metal shows the highest 3.3850 μg/g at stations close to community settlements, and the lowest is 2.7772 μg/g near the port area of ​​Teluk Bayur. Based on the PTWI value, Sargassum sp. those originating from the waters of Teluk Bayur, West Sumatra, are still safe for consumption. Based on the Anova Pb and Cu tests in Sargassum sp. do not different (p> 0.05).

Humic acid characterization and heavy metal behaviour during vermicomposting of pig manure amended with 13C-labelled rice straw

Aiming to reveal the humification process of organic waste and its contribution to the heavy metal behaviour affected by earthworm activity, it was studied about the variation of humic acid (HA) and heavy metal behaviour during vermicomposting of the mixed pig manure and 13C-labelled rice straw. The results showed that earthworms could well adapt to the culturing environment and feed organic matter for its growth and reproduction, the vermicomposting process increased the content of humic substances (HS), HA, and fulvic acid (FA) in substrate residues, but led to less transformation of HA into FA. The elemental, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence excitation–emission matrix (EEM) analysis indicated that vermicomposting led to more aromatic structures and much higher humification degree in HA, whereas less protein, FA-like substances and plastein in HA. Vermicomposting could enhance the total Cu content and decrease Cu/Zn bioavailability in the substrate residues, and vermicomposting especially can help stabilize Cu in the substrate residues by forming more complexed HA–Cu.
