Several specimens of anomuran and brachyuran decapods are reported from the late Pliocene clays (Argille Azzurre Fm.) at localities nearby Faenza (Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna), located in the foothills of Romagna Apennines (NE Italy). The specimens were assigned to species already reported from the Pliocene of Italy, but never previously recorded in this area. This new report enlarges our knowledge on the composition and distribution of the brachyuran decapods along the Pliocene coastline of the Adriatic Gulf of the paleo- Mediterranean Sea.

The decapod crustaceans of the families Tetraliidae and Trapeziidae from the Early Eocene (middle-late Ypresian) of Monte Magrè (Schio, Vicenza, NE Italy), are described. The specimens are assigned to Eurotetralia loerenthey (Müller, 1975) n. gen., Tetralia vicetina n. sp. (Tetraliidae Castro, Ng & Ahyong, 2004); Archaeotetra lessinea n. sp., Eomaldivia trispinosa Müller & Collins, 1991, Paratetralia convexa Beschin, Busulini, De Angeli & Tessier, 2007, and Paratetralia sulcata n. sp. (Trapeziidae Miers, 1886).
The specimens were discovered associated with other decapods, in the coral-rich limestone. This report is the oldest fossil record of both two families. The stratigraphical distribution of the Tetraliidae and Trapeziidae is extended back to the middle-late Ypresian.

Abstract Collections of benthic organisms were obtained during previous Soviet research cruises in the Mediterranean Sea, 1974–1980. Material was collected by bottom grabs or trawls from the depths of 20-500m. Collecting stations were allocated in the Aegean, Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, Balearic, Alboran, and Ionian Seas, and between Sicily and Tunisia. Among decapod crustaceans collected, 8 species of portunid crabs were present, i.e., Liocarcinus. corrugatus (Pennant, 1777), L. depurator (Linnaeus, 1758), L. maculatus (Risso, 1827), L. navigator (Herbst, 1794), L. vernalis (Pennant, 1816), L. zariquieyi Gordon, 1968, Macropipus tuberculatus (Roux, 1830), and Bathynectes longipes (Risso, 1816). For two species, L. maculatus and L. zariquieyi, new distributional records are presented here. An extension of the known depth range is reported here for L. maculatus and L. vernalis.
