Background: The patients’ criteria of preference for inhalation devices can affect the extent of their adherence to treatment and outcomes. Aim of this study was to assess and compare the patients’ preference and acceptability (PPA) for Breezhaler and Genuair (both Dry Powder Inhalers), and for Respimat (a Soft Mist Inhaler) in asthma and COPD out-patients by means of the Handling Questionnaire. Methods: The Handling Questionnaire is a validated instrument which allows the investigation of different domains of PPA; it also takes into account the patients’ age and gender, together with their previous experience with the inhalation devices and their previous education approach to them. Differences in terms of preference, acceptance and usability were assessed by linear and logistic regressions in order to evaluate factors influencing the proper actuation. Results and Discussion: Data from 333 patients were collected: Genuair and Respimat were the most liked and perceived as the easiest to use at glance by patients, but also as the least problematic according to the patients’ and nurse’s judgments. Mean number of attempts for achieving the first effective actuation was the highest with Breezhaler (2.6 vs 1.6; p <0.0001). Linear regressions showed that longer the explanation, higher was the number of attempts to the first proper actuation (0.58 additional attempts every 10 s increase in the first explanation, p <0.0001). Devices requiring less manoeuvres for the actuation were used properly after less attempts (0.38 increase in the number of attempts every additional manoeuvres, p <0.0001). Respimat proved to be the most indicated in COPD patients since it was the most liked and its successful rate at first attempt was the highest. Logistic regressions confirmed these data. Previous experience with DPIs and/or MDIs did not affect the patient preference and acceptability, independently whether suffering from asthma or COPD. Conclusions: Substantial differences are existing in patient’s preference and acceptability for inhalation devices, mainly related to the handling and the understanding of the different devices.

Using a sample size of 200 R&D employees, this paper examines the relationship between the current salary and starting salary, previous experience, education, employees’ age and gender. The results provided by this study show that current salary is positively associated with employees’ salary at the beginning of the career and years of education. The author finds strong evidence that current salary is negatively associated with employees’ age, previous experience and gender. Furthermore, conducting cluster analysis, results provide two different groups. The first group consists of employees who are more likely to be included in the clerical type of jobs and the second group is specific to the other types of job.

Abstract Due to the demographic changes such as longevity and low birthrates, the proportion of workers over 55 years old is expected to rise more than twice in the coming years. As the age diversity in the workplace is increasing, ageism needs more attention in every context. This study aims to explore relationships of the workplace intergenerational climate scale with other ageism and sexism scales in workplace and non-workplace contexts. Data came from a pilot online survey conducted in South Korea in December 2019 (N=74; average age=46.8 years old ranged from 20 to 76), and the data was analyzed using a series of ANOVAs and logistic regressions. The results showed that chronological age did not have a linear relationship with ageist attitudes in the workplace although relatively younger groups tend to have more ageist attitudes compared to their counterparts. In particular, those in their thirties were most reluctant to work with different generations. Conspicuously, negative attitudes towards working with different generations in the workplace were statistically significantly related to ageist attitudes towards older adults in non-workplace contexts as well as sexist attitudes in the workplace. The findings imply that prejudice and stereotypes towards different age and gender groups in workplace and non-workplace contexts might be intertwined, and interventions reducing ageism in the workplace might also have positive impacts on alleviating other types of ageism and sexism while promoting diversity.

Self-ratings of satisfaction with appearance and accomplishment of psychosocial tasks were examined by age and gender among school aged children with visible defects (cleft lip and/or palate, n = 272), or Invisible defects (cleft palate only, n = 159), and dental patients (n = 128) without clefts. Using weighted least squares ANOVA and logistic regressions, the results revealed that subjects with visible defects expressed greater dissatisfaction with their appearance than those subjects with invisible defects (p < .001). Subjects with Invisible defects consistently expressed lower problem solving ability than subjects with visible defects (p < .001) and dental patients with no defects (p < .05). Both groups with clefts expressed less social independence (p < .001); and subjects with clefts reported having more friends than other children (p < .01). Implications for clinicians and further research are discussed.
