The aim of this study is to identify and monitor the presence of <em>Aeromonas</em> spp. strains in stool cultures. We analyzed 5564 stool cultures from September 2012 to August 2013. Sixty-three patients were positive for Aeromonas spp. The most frequent symptoms were: diarrhea (46.0%) and abdominal pain (12.7%). Pediatric subjects were 28. Samples’ microscopic examination showed leukocytes in 38.1% of cases. It is still controversial whether Aeromonas are responsible for human gastroenteritis, but their presence in faecies of symptomatic patients supports their etiologic role. We propose search for toxins by polymerase chain reaction to identify strains that require an antibiotic therapy.

Toxigenic Clostridium difficile infection, causing a Pseudo Membrane Colitis (PMC) and Clostridium Difficile Associated Diarrhea(CDAD) has increased sharply. The largest risk factor is the use of antibiotics. The purpose of this study was to know how to determinethe prevalence and characteristics of subjects with Toxigenic Clostridium difficile and to assess the ability of the toxin rapid test comparedto real-time PCR. Ninety adult subjects with antibiotic therapy more than two (2) weeks were enrolled in this study. The results of toxinrapid test and real-time PCR were presented in a 2x2 table, statistical test used was Chi square. The prevalence of Toxigenic Clostridiumdifficile based on the toxin rapid test and by real-time PCR was 27.3% and 37.5%, respectively. There were significant differences betweenstool consistency and number of antibiotics used with the detection of Toxigenic Clostridium difficile. There was a relationship betweenthe duration of antibiotic therapy with the detection of Toxigenic Clostridium difficile using real-time PCR (p=0.010, RR=2.116). Thesensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, PLR and NLR rapid test against real-time PCR were 69.7%; 98.2%; 95.8%; 84.4%; 39.2 and 0.31,respectively. This study concluded that the prevalence of Clostridium difficile in RSCM was higher compared to that in Malaysia, Thailandand India; the subjects with antibiotic therapy for more than four (4) weeks had a double risk to have Toxigenic Clostridium difficilethan subjects with antibiotic therapy for less than that time (4 weeks). Thus, in this study, toxin rapid test could be used as a tool todetect Toxigenic Clostridium difficile.

Abstract Efforts to recognize SARS–CoV-2 infection have focused on respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath. Although it is also well known that SARS–CoV-2 infection can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, there are emerging reports of SARS–CoV-2 infection causing surgical pathology. We present the first case report of SARS–CoV-2 infection directly causing acute appendicitis, first suspected due to highly atypical histological features and later confirmed as polymerase chain reaction positive appendicular tissue sample.

SUMMARYWe determined the prevalence of Entamoeba (E.) histolytica, E. dispar and E. moshkovskii in patients with chronic diarrhoea associated with abdominal pain or discomfort mimicking irritable bowel syndrome. Stool samples were collected from 161 patients with chronic diarrhoea and from 157 healthy controls. Stool microscopy with modified trichrome stain, culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Entamoeba spp. differentiation was performed. Microscopy demonstrated Entamoeba cysts in 44% (57/129) of patients with diarrhoea compared to 29% (44/151) of controls (P=0·009). In patients with diarrhoea, PCR for E. histolytica was positive in 9% (11/129) (P=0·008), E. dispar in 19% (24/129) (P=0·117) and E. moshkovskii in 19% (24/129) (P<0·001). E. histolytica and E. moshkovskii were significantly associated with diarrhoea while E. dispar was found equally in both groups.

Abstract: Malaria is still a public health problem worldwide, especially in economically underdeveloped and undeveloped countries. There are several laboratory diagnostic tests for malaria inter alia microscopic examination (thick and thin stained blood smear), rapid diagnostic test (RDT), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This study was aimed to compare the effectivity of RDT with of microscopic examination as the gold standard of malaria diagnosis. This was a diagnostic test study. Blood samples were obtained from 38 people of clinical malaria who lived at Likupang Barat from October 2015 to January 2016. The RDT results were compared with the microscopic examination to obtain the sensitivity and specifity levels. The results showed that of the RDT, the sensitivity was 67%, the specifity was 97%, the positive predictive value was 67%, and the negative predictive value was 97%. Conclusion: Rapid diagnostic test was nearly as effective as the microscopic examination of malaria.Keywords: RDT, microscopic examination, sensitivity, specificityAbstrak: Malaria masih menjadi masalah kesehatan di dunia terutama di negara yang secara ekonomis masih tertinggal dan belum berkembang. Diagnosis laboratorik malaria dapat dilakukan dengan beberapa cara antara lain pemeriksaan mikroskopik yaitu hapusan darah tebal dan hapusan darah tipis, rapid diagnostic test (RDT), dan polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan tingkat efektifitas antara RDT dengan pemeriksaan mikroskopik yang merupakan baku emas diagnostik malaria. Jenis penelitian ialah uji diagnostik. Sampel darah diambil dari 38 orang dengan klinis malaria di Likupang Barat sejak Oktober 2015 - Januari 2016. Hasil pemeriksaan RDT dibandingkan dengan hasil pemeriksaan mikrsokopik untuk mengetahui tingkat sensivitas dan spesifisitasnya. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan tingkat sensivitas RDT secara umum sebesar 67%, spesifitas sebesar 97%, nilai duga positif sebesar 67%, dan nilai duga negatif sebesar 97%. Simpulan: Pemeriksaan RDT menunjukkan efektivitas dan akurasi yang hampir sama dengan pemeriksaan mikroskopik.Kata kunci: RDT, pemeriksaan mikroskopis, sensitivitas, spesifitas
