A new engineering practice in modern buildings is to use beams with web openings to allow the passage of services within the depth of the beam instead of underneath the beam. As the web post failure may occur before the section reaches the limiting temperature, usually an increase in the fire protection may be required for members with web openings in comparison to its equivalent solid section. The aim of this work is to present an experimental study of unloaded solid and cellular beams with circular holes in fire conditions with and without intumescent fire protection. These preliminary tests results are the basis for generating an elemental multi-temperature analysis needed to assess cellular beams with intumescent protection and give experimental results for calibration of further numerical simulations. The experimental results show that, considering the same nominal fire protection thickness, one can obtain a higher fire resistance time for solid beams when compared with cellular beams. The tests performed, with different hole diameters and web-post widths, points that to achieve the same fire resistance time, a cellular beam will need a higher fire protection compared to an equivalent solid beam. Also, a special care is needed when the intumescent coating is applied around the hole to avoid the intumescent contraction, applying for example an over coating.

This article discusses one of the methods of fire protection, namely, the coating of metal structures with fire retardant paints. Intumescent coatings are currently the most widely used. Fire retardant coatings based on epoxy paints have high performance characteristics and are promising. As the foaming component, the system of ammonium polyphosphate - pentaerythritol - melamine (in a ratio of 2: 1: 1) was selected. The fire retardant properties of the developed material were investigated. Coatings on the base of the developed fire retardant paint allow us to increase own level of fire resistance of metal constructions up to three (90 minutes).

The basic problems of the theory such as principle of assigning classes of fire resistance, reliability issues, alternative approach to calculation methods, mathematical models of concrete and reinforcement deformation diagram, numerical modelling techniques, temperature analysis and calculation of mechanical work of structural system in fire conditions have been considered. It is revealed that the real practical problem is the lack of professional training of civil engineers in Ukraine and abroad.

Composite beam using asymmetric H-shaped steel is one of the constructional structures developed in the advanced countries in Europe since early 1990s. The purpose of this study on composite beams where H-shaped steel is partially laid in concrete slabs was to find how to design fire protection and improve fire-resistance to make deep deck plates provide the beams with advantages upon a fire and to improve stiffness in structural aspect. Only lower flange which is directly exposed to a fire was included in fire-resistance design in order to decide optimal fire- protection design condition and test was conducted for spray-coating and paint-coating. In the fire resistance test, web thickness and lower flange thickness were varied to derive the optimum condition for improving fire-resistance performance. It was observed from the test that 90-minute-protection employed to lower flange provided fire resistance for 3 hours. It was also observed that the basic shape resisted fire for 89 minutes, while web reinforcement and lower flange reinforcement provided fire-resistance for 112 and 157 minutes, respectively. The result showed that lower flange reinforcement is the most effective way to improve fire-resistance.

A composite cellular beam may offer much advantage by using its web openings, but it could lose some fire resistance capacity. The paper studies the influence of HVAC ducts to composite cellular beam while the ducts’ weight is supported by the web holes.

A simulation describing the fiber movement during the condensation was conducted, and the effect of the condensation in the carding machine was studied. The simulation results showed that the condensation has the blending and the evening effect on the condensed sliver, which can be explained by the fiber rearrangement. Moreover, the increasing web width and the decreasing condensing length can result in a more uniform sliver. Further, the evening effect of the web width on the web was verified by experiments. The simulation results were in general agreement with the experimental results.

These days there are undeniably unique materials that, however, must also meet demanding safety requirements. In the case of vehicles, these are undoubtedly excellent fire protection characteristics. The aim of the work is to experimentally verify the proposed material compositions for long-term heat loads and the effect of thickness, the number of laminating layers (prepregs) as well as structures with different types of cores (primarily honeycomb made of Nomex paper type T722 of different densities, aluminum honeycomb and PET foam) and composite coating based on a glass-reinforced phenolic matrix. The selected materials are suitable candidates for intelligent sandwich structures, usable especially for interior cladding applications in the industry for the production of means of public transport (e.g., train units, trams, buses, hybrid vehicles).
