Results of a molecular analysis on the European hermit beetles (the <em>Osmoderma</em> <em>eremita</em> species-complex), recently published in a companion paper, are shortly dis- cussed and commented. These results indicate a clear-cut distinction between two clades. The first one includes the W-European <em>O. eremita</em> Scopoli, 1763, and the two Italian endemic taxa <em>O. italicum</em> Sparacio, 2000 and <em>O. cristinae</em> Sparacio, 1994, from southern peninsular Italy and Sicily, respectively. The second one includes the widespread E-European<em> O. barnabita</em> Motschulsky, 1845 (<strong>nom. resurr</strong>.), and the southern Balcanic <em>O. lassallei</em> Baraud &amp; Tauzin, 1991 from Greece and European Turkey. Within the two clades, molecular data well support a specific rank for <em>O. lassallei</em> and <em>O. barn­abita</em> on one side, and of <em>O.</em> <em>eremita</em> and <em>O. cristinae</em> on the other side, while the taxonomic position of <em>O. italicum</em>, more closely related with <em>O. eremita</em>, is still uncertain, waiting for analysis of additional specimens of this very rare taxon. Current geographical distribution, interspecific genetic diversification, and relatively low levels of intraspecific genetic divergence in <em>O. eremita</em> sensu stricto, are hypothesized to be the result of multiple speciation events (mainly occurred in refugial forest areas of the Italian and Balkan peninsulas and Sicily before and during the Pleistocene glacial peaks), followed by fast post-glacial northward and westward expansion of some species. The need of further genetic data on the rare and threatened hermit beetle species and the importance of more detailed information on their distribution ranges are emphasized and discussed, in order to plan conservation strategies in the near future. An updated worldwide checklist of the species of the genus <em>Osmoderma</em> is finally presented.

The authors describe the macro- and microscopic features of Inocybe cervenianensis, a new taxon belonging to the genus Inocybe sensu stricto. The description is illustrated with photographs of the basidiomes in their natural habitat and photographs of the main microscopic features. Molecular data (nrITS and RPB2) support the recognition of this new species.

In 2004, Costa-Santos and cols. reported 24 patients from 19 Brazilian families with 17α-hydroxylase deficiency and showed that p.W406R and p.R362C corresponded to 50% and 32% of CYP17A1 mutant alleles, respectively. The present report describes clinical and molecular data of six patients from three inbred Brazilian families with 17α-hydroxlyse deficiency. All patients had hypogonadism, amenorrhea and hypertension at diagnosis. Two sisters were found to be 46,XY with both gonads palpable in the inguinal region. All patients presented hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, with high levels of ACTH (> 104 ng/mL), suppressed plasmatic renin activity, low levels of potassium (< 2.8 mEq/L) and elevated progesterone levels (> 4.4 ng/mL). Three of them, including two sisters, were homozygous for p.W406R mutation and the other three (two sisters and one cousin) were homozygous for p.R362C. The finding of p.W406R and p.R362C in the CYP17A1 gene here reported in additional families, confirms them as the most frequent mutations causing complete combined 17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency in Brazilian patients.

Biodiversity management in Ghana has been largely driven by scientific conservation models. The time-tested and useful traditional conservation ethos in the Ghanaian cultural and artistic elements such as festivals, proverbs, cosmological belief systems and taboos are often watered down by conservationists in biodiversity conservation schemes. This is due to conservationists’ lack of clear-cut guidelines on how to effectively utilize the traditional knowledge systems in complementing the scientific conservation models they are well versed. The developed traditional biodiversity strategy was based on the findings from a robust phenomenological study conducted among purposively and randomly sampled key stakeholders in biodiversity management in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The document aims at offering comprehensive information and guidelines to conservationists on effective ways of implementing traditional knowledge systems in biodiversity conservation issues in Ghana. It ultimately aims at filling the dearth in traditional knowledge systems that have been an age-long problem for the conservation ministries and agencies in Ghana. The informative directions in the developed traditional biodiversity strategy would offer another lens to addressing conservation issues in Ghana while acting as a viable complement to the scientific models. This would ultimately maximize and enrich the conservation strategies for managing Ghana’s biodiversity.

This paper focuses in the natural and economic effects of renewable energy sources in the developing countries using a case of Azerbaijan. Traditional fuel supplies dependent on gas, oil, and coal are highly useful for the development of a country’s economy. However, certain detrimental effects of these commodities on the environment have limited us to use these resources under clear cut-off points. As a result, we were able to turn our intuition into renewable energy sources. By using renewable energy sources, social, natural, and financial challenges can be ignored because these sources are considered harmless to the atmosphere, as there are little or virtually no fumes discharged, and toxic gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. Renewable electricity would be a major advantage for power generation in the near future so we will reuse these assets to generate useful electricity. The paper discusses these and other issues with the implementation of renewable energy and assess the potentials of Azerbaijan in adapting this type of energy in the future.

Abstract:As the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, Oncomelania hupensis plays an irreplaceable role in the prevalence of schistosomiasis japonica. Several living subspecies of Oncomelania hupensis are found in Asia, especially in China, Japan,the Philippines, and Sulawesi of Indonesia. The existing geographical distribution pattern of O. hupensis has been influenced by geological events. This study used existing mitochondrial gene data for O. hupensis in the GenBank database and the molecular clock method to estimate the divergence time of each subspecies of O. hupensis. For the first time, the timing and causes of the distribution pattern of the different O. hupensis subspecies were studied by combining molecular data with data on geologic events. The results showed that the uplift and isolation of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau caused Oncomelania hupensis robertsoni to differentiate 4.76 Ma(Million anniversary), while Oncomelania hupensis guangxiensis was affected by the third Himalayan orogenic movement, differentiating 1.10 Ma. Oncomelania hupensis nosophora was influenced by the formation of the Yonaguni Strait and diverged 1.43 Ma. Influenced by ice ages and interglacial periods, Oncomelania hupensis tangi and Oncomelania hupensis formosana diverged 0.57 Ma. The link of the ancient Yangtze River promoted the spread of O. hupensis to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the developed water network facilitated gene exchange among Oncomelania hupensis hupensis in the area. Eventually, 0.62 Ma, O. h. hupensis differentiated.Author summaryPhylogenetic analysis of Pomatiopsidae species showed that Oncomelania was isolated from other genera and clustered independently in phylogenetic trees. Further analysis of the species Oncomelania hupensis and its subspecies was performed. The snail species O. hupensis has multiple subspecies that exhibit certain differences. These subspecies are distributed across Asia, from China’s Yunnan Province in the west to Japan in the east and south to the Philippines and Indonesia. In addition, the subspecies are widespread in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and the distribution ranges of the different subspecies do not overlap. The formation of this distribution pattern of each subspecies of O. hupensis has a profound impact on the prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum. Therefore, the authors analyzed molecular data and geological historical events to investigate the timing and causes of the distribution pattern of each subspecies of O. hupensis.

Odisha being the coastal state of Indian sub-continent records a rich medicinal plant diversity in general and orchids in particular. Since time immemorial, these important plant resources remains in a neglected state leading to an alarming situation in near future. Virgin forests of Odisha spreading in areas like Gandhmardan Hills, Niyamgiri Hills, Deomali Hills, Mahendragiri Hills and Similipal Biosphere Reserve hoards rich orchid diversity enduring luxuriant growth. Out of 137 species of Orchids recorded so far, Similipal area alone harbours about 94 orchid species possessing high aesthetic and medicinal value. Unfortunately, the medicinal importance of orchids of this region has drawn least attention from both the scientific fraternity as well as general populace compared to their role in horticulture field. Orchid species of Odisha like Acampe carinata (Griff.) Panigr., A. praemorsa (Roxb.) Blatt. & McCann, Geodorum recurvum (Roxb.) Alston, Habenaria marginata Coleb., Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Bl. and Vanda testacea (Lindl.) Rchb.f. are used to cure rheumatism, arthritis, dysentery, asthma and snake bite etc. However, the medicinal potentialities of these orchids are not so well exploited though they possess immense curative values. Further, as the forests of Odisha are experiencing various anthropogenic as well as abiotic pressures, many of the orchid populations are fast shrinking leading to their mass depletion. Realizing this, the current communication highlights the importance of 26 medicinal orchids very often used by the tribal populace of Odisha to get relief from various ailments. Concurrently, some major conservational strategies have also been projected.

A new trechine species Aphaenops parvulus sp. n. (Carabidae, Trechini) is described from Esjamundo cave in the Pyrenees of Huesca, Spain. The new species belongs to the subgenus Aphaenops (sensu stricto), but differs from its closest congeners by the small size—it is the smallest species of the group—and characters of the aedeagus. Molecular data based on fragments of a mitochondrial (COI) and a nuclear (LSU) genes recognised Aphaenops parvulus sp. n. as a sister taxon to A. eskualduna Coiffait. Aphaenops eskualduna is reported from Spain with precision for the first time.

Pugettia quadridens (De Haan, 1837) and its closely similar congener, P. intermedia Sakai, 1938, are redescribed and illustrated and their possible infraspecific variations related to sexual, ontogenetic, and environmental differences are discussed. As a result, a new species, Pugettia ferox, which had long been believed to be a local variant of P. quadridens sensu lato in the northeast Japan, is described. Despite moderate sexual dimorphism and considerable variability related to their ontogeny, the three species can be distinguished from each other by the combination of various morphological characters including the structure of the orbital region and male first gonopods. The patterns of ontogenetic morphological and morphometric changes in the chelipeds, gonopods, and pleons are also differentiated among the three species. The updated distribution ranges of three species greatly overlap in the northeast Asian waters, although P. quadridens sensu stricto is distributed more southward than P. ferox n. sp.. Distinguishing characters between P. quadridens s.s. and P. pellucens Rathbun, 1932, and between P. intermedia and P. vulgaris Ohtsuchi, Kawamura & Takeda, 2014, are revised.

The demarcation of the Old World species in Hordeum L. section Hordeastrum Doell. has been the subject of considerable controversy. The present paper reports the results of a morphometric analysis of the wall and sea barleys (H. murinum L., H. marinum Huds., and their allies). A sample of 227 accessions was scored for 39 characters, and the resulting data matrix was divided into three groups on the basis of lodicules and cpiblast characters. These three groups were then subjected to several aspects of discriminant analysis (stepwise discriminant analysis, linear discriminant analysis, canonical analysis of discriminance, and nearest neighbor discriminant analysis) both on untransformed and log-transformed data. The results indicate that the wall and sea barleys consist of five distinct groups worthy of morphological specific rank. These correspond to H. marinum sensu stricto, H. geniculatum All., H. glaucum Steudel. H. murinum sensu stricto, and H. leporinum Link. Ranges for 37 characters within these five taxa are presented. A key to the five species and one hybrid (reported in the first paper of this series) is supplied. Our conclusions are discussed in the context of various taxonomic treatments of the group.

ABSTRACTFormation flight could greatly assist the air transport industry in tackling the challenges of environmental impact, excessive reliance on fuel and overcapacity. Previous studies have shown drag reductions leading to significant fuel savings for aircraft in formation relative to their solo flight. Safety is guaranteed with the use of extended formation distances, and practical implementation issues could be solved in the near future. Since studies so far have focused on existing aircraft configurations and technology, a case study using a strut-braced wing airliner was carried out to ascertain its applicability to less conventional craft. The present results did not indicate such clear-cut benefits. If formation flight is to be successful and beneficial for the next generations of aircraft, it will be vital to consider its interaction with new technologies developed for highly efficient operation, in particular those aimed at reduction of aircraft drag such as laminar flow, and to do so early in the design of aerospace vehicles and wider systems.
