The paper summarizes the results of a laboratory study of the separate and combined effects of bed proximity and large velocity gradients on the frequency of vortex shedding from pipeline spans immersed in the thick boundary layers of tidal currents. This investigation forms part of a wider project concerned with the assessment of span stability. The measurements show that in the case of both sheared and uniform approach flows, with and without velocity gradients, respectively, the Strouhal number defining the vortex shedding frequency progressively increases as the gap between the pipe base and the bed is reduced below two pipe diameters. The maximum increase in vortex shedding Strouhal number, recorded close to the bed in an approach flow with large velocity gradients, was of the order of 25 percent.

A study was made to determine effects of trailing-edge geometry on the vortex-induced vibrations of a model blade designed to simulate the conditions at the trailing edge of a hydraulic-turbine blade. For the type of trailing-edge flow encountered, characterized by a thick boundary layer relative to the blade thickness, the vortex-shedding frequency could not be represented by any modification of the Strouhal formula. The amplitude of the induced vibrations increased with the strength of a vortex in the von Karman vortex street of the wake; one exception was provided by a grooved edge, which is discussed in some detail. For a particular approach velocity, the vortex strength is primarily a function of the ratio of distance between separation points to boundary-layer thickness, the degree of “shielding” between regions of vortex growth, and frequency of vortex shedding.

A passive, self-agitating method which takes advantage of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is presented to disrupt the thermal boundary layer and thereby enhance the convective heat transfer performance of a channel. A flexible cylinder is placed at centerline of a channel. The vortex shedding due to the presence of the cylinder generates a periodic lift force and the consequent vibration of the cylinder. The fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) due to the vibration strengthens the disruption of the thermal boundary layer by reinforcing vortex interaction with the walls, and improves the mixing process. This novel concept is demonstrated by a three-dimensional modeling study in different channels. The fluid dynamics and thermal performance are discussed in terms of the vortex dynamics, disruption of the thermal boundary layer, local and average Nusselt numbers (Nu), and pressure loss. At different conditions (Reynolds numbers, channel geometries, material properties), the channel with the VIV is seen to significantly increase the convective heat transfer coefficient. When the Reynolds number is 168, the channel with the VIV improves the average Nu by 234.8% and 51.4% in comparison with a clean channel and a channel with a stationary cylinder, respectively. The cylinder with the natural frequency close to the vortex shedding frequency is proved to have the maximum heat transfer enhancement. When the natural frequency is different from the vortex shedding frequency, the lower natural frequency shows a higher heat transfer rate and lower pressure loss than the larger one.

Abstract As a result of rapid changes in surface conditions when a landfalling hurricane moves from ocean to land, interactions between the hurricane and surface heat and moisture fluxes become essential components of its evolution and dissipation. With a research version of the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model (HWRF), this study examines the effects of the vertical eddy diffusivity in the boundary layer on the evolution of three landfalling hurricanes (Dennis, Katrina, and Rita in 2005). Specifically, the parameterization scheme of eddy diffusivity for momentum Km is adjusted with the modification of the mixed-layer velocity scale in HWRF for both stable and unstable conditions. Results show that the change in the Km parameter leads to improved simulations of hurricane track, intensity, and quantitative precipitation against observations during and after landfall, compared to the simulations with the original Km. Further diagnosis shows that, compared to original Km, the modified Km produces stronger vertical mixing in the hurricane boundary layer over land, which tends to stabilize the hurricane boundary layer. Consequently, the simulated landfalling hurricanes attenuate effectively with the modified Km, while they mostly inherit their characteristics over the ocean and decay inefficiently with the original Km.

Flow-induced noise from the sail hull, which is induced by the horseshoe vortex, the boundary layer separation and the tail vortex shedding, is a significant problem for the underwater vehicles, while has not been adequately studied. We have performed simulations and experiments to reveal the noise generation mechanism from these flows using the scaled sail hull with part of a submarine body. The large eddy simulation and the wavenumber–frequency spectrum are adopted for simulations. The frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 2000 Hz. The simulation results show that the flow-induced noise with the frequency less than 500 Hz is mainly generated by the horseshoe vortex; the flow-induced noise because of the tail vortex shedding is mainly within the frequency of shedding vortex, which is 595 Hz in the study; the flow-induced noise caused by the boundary layer separation lies in the whole frequency range. Moreover, we have conducted the experiments in a gravity water tunnel, and the experimental results are in good accordance with the simulation results. The results can lay the foundation for the design of flow control devices to suppress and reduce the flow-induced noise from the sail hull.
