Abstract Fast-track engineering to expeditiously deploy new technologies in upstream oil and gas heavily relies on timely agreement and synergy between the engineering team and stakeholders on (1) tool architecture (2) operational envelope and wellbore environment (3) qualification criteria(s) and overall verification & validation (V&V) strategy, among others which lead to the product specifications. Here we present a "Case Study" where two new technologies, were engineered to order for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions: a first-generation Pressure-Temperature (P-T) flowable sensor from our "Teleo" product line, and a multilayered water reactive plug for multi-stage stimulation (MSS) and acid frac, designed from bulk ultrafine-grained light alloys and water reactive, nanocomposites.

The subject of the research is the current state of the fuel and energy complex (FEC) that ensures generation of a significant part of the budget and the innovative development of the economy.The purpose of the research was to establish priority directions for the development of the FEC sectors based on a comprehensive analysis of their innovative and investment activities. The dynamics of investment in the fuel and energy sector are considered. It is noted that large-scale modernization of the fuel and energy complex requires substantial investment and support from the government. The results of the government programs of corporate innovative development are analyzed. The results of the research identified innovative development priorities in the power, oil, gas and coal sectors of the fuel and energy complex. The most promising areas of innovative development in the oil and gas sector are the technologies of enhanced oil recovery; the development of hard-to-recover oil reserves; the production of liquefied natural gas and its transportation. In the power sector, the prospective areas are activities aimed at improving the performance reliability of the national energy systems and the introduction of digital technologies. Based on the research findings, it is concluded that the innovation activities in the fuel and energy complex primarily include the development of new technologies, modernization of the FEC technical base; adoption of state-of-the-art methods of coal mining and oil recovery; creating favorable economic conditions for industrial extraction of hard-to-recover reserves; transition to carbon-free fuel sources and energy carriers that can reduce energy consumption and cost as well as reducing the negative FEC impact on the environment.

Abstract The deterioration of the reservoir properties of potential oil and gas bearing areas on mature and green fields, as well as the increase in the volume of hard-to-recover reserves on low-permeable reservoirs set us new challenges in searching and using effective development technologies to maintain and even increase the oil production levels. Based on successful international experience, Russian oil and gas companies use horizontal wells (HW) with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing (MSHF) for the cost-effective development of low-permeable reservoirs. Thus, since the first pilot works of drilling technologies and completion of HW with MSHF in 2011, at the beginning of 2020, over 1,200 HW with MSHF were drilled and came on stream at the fields of LLC RN-Yuganskneftegaz, about half of which are at the exploitation play AS10-12 of the northern license territory (NLT) of the Priobskoye field. In searching the best technologies and engineering solutions, the company tested different lengths of horizontal section of HW, the number of hydraulic fracturing (HF) stages and distances between hydraulic fracturing ports, as well as different specific mass of the proppant per frac port. Recently, there has been a tendency in design solutions to increase the length of the HWs and the number of hydraulic fractures with a decreasing distance between the frac ports and a decreasing specific mass of the proppant per frac port. This work studies the actual and theoretical efficiency of HW with MSHF of various designs (different lengths of horizontal section of HW and the number of HF stages) and to assess the viability of increasing the technological complexity, as well as to analyze the actual impact of loading the proppant mass per port on performing HW with MSHF. The study is based on the results of the analysis of the factual experience accumulated over the entire history of the development of the exploitation play AS10-12 of the NLT of the Priobskoye field of the Rosneft Company. In studying the viability of increasing the technological complexity, especially, increasing the length of horizontal section of HW, increasing the number of HF stages, and reducing the distance between the frac ports: we discovered the typical methodological errors made in analyzing the efficiency of wells of various designs; we developed the methodology for analysis of the actual multiplicity of indicators of wells of various designs, in particular, HW with MSHF relative to deviated wells (DW) with HF; we carried out the statistical analysis of the actual values of the multiplicity of performance indicators and completion parameters of HW with MSHF of various designs relative to the surrounding DW with HF of the exploitation play AS10-12 of the NLT of the Priobskoye field; we performed the theoretical calculation of the multiplicity of the productivity coefficient for the HW with MSHF of various designs relative to DW with HF for the standard development system of the exploitation play AS10-12 of the NLT of the Priobskoye field; we compared the actual and theoretical results. The paper also presents the results of studying the actual effect of changes of proppant's mass per port on performance indicators of HW with MSHF of the same design and with an increase in the number of fractures of the hydraulic fracturing without changing the length of horizontal section of HW. As for performance indicators, being the basis for estimating the efficiency of HW with MSHF of various designs, we used the productivity index per meter of the effective reservoir thickness and the cumulative fluid production per meter of the effective reservoir thickness per a certain period of operation. And as the completion parameters, we used the length of the horizontal section of HW, the number of HF stages, the distance between the frac ports, and the specific mass of the proppant per meter of the effective reservoir thickness per frac port. The results of this work are the determining vector of development for future design decisions in improving the efficiency of HW with MSHF.

Abstract Currently, production and exploration drilling has entered a stage of development where one of the highest priority goals is to reduce the time for well construction with new technologies and innovations. One of the key components in this aspect is the utilizing of the latest achievements in the design and manufacture of rock cutting tools – drill bits. This article presents some new ideas on methods for identifying different types of vibrations when drilling with PDC bits using a system of sensors installed directly into the bit itself. In the oil and gas fields of Eastern Siberia, one of the main reasons for ineffective drilling with PDC bits are vibrations, which lead to premature wear of the cutting structure of the bit and the achievement of low ROPs in the dolomite and dolerite intervals. For efficient drilling of wells of various trajectories with a bottom hole assembly (BHA), including a downhole motor (PDM) and a PDC bit, special attention is paid to control of the bit by limiting the depth of cut, as well as the level of vibrations that occur during drilling process. Often, the existing complex of surface and BHA equipment fails to identify vibrations that occur directly on the bit, as well as to establish the true cause of their occurrence. Therefore, as an innovative solution to this problem, a system of sensors installed directly into the bit itself is proposed. The use of such a system makes it possible to determine the drilling parameters, differentiated depending on the lithological properties of rocks, leading to an increase in vibration impact. Together with the Operators, tests have been successfully carried out, which have proven the effectiveness of the application of this technology. The data obtained during the field tests made it possible to determine the type and source of vibration very accurately during drilling. In turn, this made it possible to precisely adjust the drilling parameters according to the drilled rocks, to draw up a detailed road map of effective drilling in a specific interval. Correction of drilling parameters based on the analysis of data obtained from sensors installed in the bit made it possible to reduce the resulting wear of the PDC bit cutting structure and, if necessary, make changes to the bit design to improve the technical and economic indicators. Thus, the use of a system of sensors for measuring the drilling parameters in a bit ensured the dynamic stability of the entire BHA at the bottomhole when drilling in rocks of different hardness, significantly reduced the wear of the drilling tools and qualitatively improved the drilling performance.

Can fossil-based fuels become carbon neutral or carbon negative? The oil and gas industry is facing pressure to decarbonize, and new technologies are allowing companies and experts to imagine lower-carbon fossil fuels as part of a circular carbon economy. This paper draws on interviews with experts, ethnographic observations at carbontech and carbon management events, and interviews with members of the public along a suggested CO2 pipeline route from Iowa to Texas, to explore: What is driving the sociotechnical imaginary of circular fossil carbon among experts, and what are its prospects? How do people living in the landscapes that are expected to provide carbon utilization and removal services understand their desirability and workability? First, the paper examines a contradiction in views of carbon professionals: while experts understand the scale of infrastructure, energy, and capital required to build a circular carbon economy, they face constraints in advocating for policies commensurate with this scale, though they have developed strategies for managing this disconnect. Second, the paper describes views from the land in the central US, surfacing questions about the sustainability of new technologies, the prospect of carbon dioxide pipelines, and the way circular carbon industries could intersect trends of decline in small rural towns. Experts often fail to consider local priorities and expertise, and people in working landscapes may not see the priorities and plans of experts, constituting a “double unseeing.” Robust energy democracy involves not just resistance to dominant imaginaries of circular carbon, but articulation of alternatives. New forms of expert and community collaboration will be key to transcending this double unseeing and furthering energy democracy.

Abstract Historically, the oil and gas industry has been slow and extremely cautious to adopt emerging technologies. But in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the industry has broken from tradition. It has not only embraced AI; it is leading the pack. AI has not only changed what it now means to work in the oil industry, it has changed how companies create, capture, and deliver value. Thanks, or no thanks to automation, traditional oil industry skills and talents are now being threatened, and in most cases, rendered obsolete. Oil and gas industry day-to-day work is progressively gravitating towards software and algorithms, and today’s workers are resigning themselves to the fact that computers and robots will one day "take over" and do much of their work. The adoption of AI and how it might affect career prospects is currently causing a lot of anxiety among industry professionals. This paper details how artificial intelligence, automation, and robotics has redefined what it now means to work in the oil industry, as well as the new challenges and responsibilities that the AI revolution presents. It takes a deep-dive into human-robot interaction, and underscores what AI can, and cannot do. It also identifies several traditional oilfield positions that have become endangered by automation, addresses the premonitions of professionals in these endangered roles, and lays out a roadmap on how to survive and thrive in a digitally transformed world. The future of work is evolving, and new technologies are changing how talent is acquired, developed, and retained. That robots will someday "take our jobs" is not an impossible possibility. It is more of a reality than an exaggeration. Automation in the oil industry has achieved outcomes that go beyond human capabilities. In fact, the odds are overwhelming that AI that functions at a comparable level to humans will soon become ubiquitous in the industry. The big question is: How long will it take? The oil industry of the future will not need large office complexes or a large workforce. Most of the work will be automated. Drilling rigs, production platforms, refineries, and petrochemical plants will not go away, but how work is done at these locations will be totally different. While the industry will never entirely lose its human touch, AI will be the foundation of the workforce of the future. How we react to the AI revolution today will shape the industry for generations to come. What should we do when AI changes our job functions and workforce? Should we be training AI, or should we be training humans?

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd (KHI) has started a comprehensive program to further improve performance and availability of existing Kawasaki gas turbines. In the program, one of the Kawasaki’s existing gas turbine was selected from the broad product line and various kinds of technology were investigated and adopted to further improve its thermal performance and availability. The new technologies involve novel film cooling of turbine nozzles, advanced and large-scale numerical simulations, new thermal barrier coating. The thermal performance target is combined cycle efficiency of 51.6% and the target ramp rate is 20% load per minute. The program started in 2015 and engine testing has just started. In this paper, details of the program are described, focusing on design procedure.

The use of multi-stage centrifugal compressors carries out a leading role in oil and gas process applications. Green operation and market competitiveness require the use of low-cost reliable compression units with high efficiencies and wide operating range. A methodology is presented for the design optimization of multi-stage centrifugal compressors with prediction of the compressor map and estimation of the uncertainty limits. A one-dimensional (1D) design tool has been developed that automatically generates a multi-stage radial compressor satisfying the target machine requirements based on a few input parameters. The compressor performance map is then assessed using the method proposed by Casey-Robinson [1], and the approach developed by Al-Busaidi-Pilidis [2]. The off-design performance method relies on empirical correlations calibrated on the performance maps of many single-stage centrifugal compressors. An uncertainty quantification study on the predicted performance maps was conducted using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and generalized Polynomial Chaos Expansion (gPCE). Finally, the design procedure has been coupled to an in-house optimizer based on evolutionary algorithms. The complete design procedure has been applied to a multi-stage industrial compressor test case. A multi-objective optimization of a multi-stage industrial compressor has been performed targeting maximum compressor efficiency and flow range. The results of the optimization show the existence of optimum compressor architectures and how the Pareto fronts evolve depending on the number of stages and shafts.

Abstract Norwegian industries are constantly assessing new technologies and methods for more efficient and safer maintenance in the aqua cultural, renewable energy, and oil and gas industries. These Norwegian offshore industries share a common challenge: to install new equipment and transport personnel in a safe and controllable way between ships, farms and platforms. This paper deploys the Moving Frame Method (MFM) to analyze ship stability moderated by a dual gyroscopic inertial device. The MFM describes the dynamics of the system using modern mathematics. Lie group theory and Cartan’s moving frames are the foundation of this new approach to engineering dynamics. This, together with a restriction on the variation of the angular velocity used in Hamilton’s principle, enables an effective way of extracting the equations of motion. This project extends previous work. It accounts for the dual effect of two inertial disk devices, it accounts for the prescribed spin of the disks. It separates out the prescribed variables. This work displays the results in 3D on cell phones. It represents a prelude to testing in a wave tank.

T The possibilities of attraction of investments for efficient removal of hydrocarbon reserves, which belong to hardrecoverable and mechanisms for attracting investments in the further development of oil and gas deposits in Ukraine, are presented. The main principles of the ranking of hydrocarbon reserves are considered, deposits structure analysis is needed to evaluate the prospects of transferring their parts to cost-effective ones if some economic conditions will change, as well as the appearance of new methods and technologies for attracting these reserves into development. For oil and gas companies information about the qualitative characteristics of profitable reserves and their distribution in the collectors is very important. The main advantages of using intelligent oil and gas field technologies, which enable real-time realization of fast processing of large volumes of geological information, modeling of various extraction scenarios, and the adoption of rational management decisions for optimizing oil and gas production are described. Hydrodynamic modeling, as an instrument for the search and growth of hydrocarbon reserves, its quantitative and qualitative assessment and a detailed comprehensive study of productive collectors based on modern achievements in geological and geophysical sciences is one of the main ways of development of hardrecoverable reserves. The application of existing and the creation of new technological solutions for the efficient production of oil and gas with positive economic indicators, is a logical continuation of a complex of works on low-yielding hydrocarbon deposits. The main source of growth of hydrocarbon reserves in deposits with a long history of development are: unidentified reserves outside the productive part of the deposit and missed oil-saturated intervals; oil-saturated intervals in the productive section, which aren’t attracted in the development. The development of hardrecoverable reserves is associated with considerable complexity, but the engineering approach, using development monitoring, hydrodynamic modeling, attracting international experience and new technologies, will increase profitability and obtain additional extraction of significant volumes of hydrocarbons, which will ensure not only the achievement of maximum investment efficiency, but also full usage of natural resources of hydrocarbons.
