Abstract Many commercially available English-language materials do not provide natural, or even pragmatically appropriate, conversational models for learners. This paper argues for increasing the role of pragmastics in English-language instruction. Classroom teachers can integrate pragmatics into the language curriculum by drawing on natural conversations, students' observations, and incomplete dialogues in textbooks. The paper provides guide-lines for pragmatically-centred lessons, as well as examples of specific activities, using closings in American English to illustrate these examples.

Ferromanganese nodules are an important mineral resource in the seafloor; however, the genetic mechanism is still unknown. The biomineralization of microorganisms appears to promote ferromanganese nodule formation. To investigate the possible mechanism of microbial–ferromanganese nodule interaction, to test the possibility of marine microorganisms as deposition template for ferromanganese nodules minerals, the interactions between Jeotgalibacillus campisalis strain CW126-A03 and ferromanganese nodules were studied. The results showed that strain CW126-A03 increased ion concentrations of Fe, Mn, and other metal elements in solutions at first. Then, metal ions were accumulated on the cells’ surface and formed ultra-micro sized mineral particles, even crystalline minerals. Strain CW126-A03 appeared to release major elements in ferromanganese nodules, and the cell surface may be a nucleation site for mineral precipitation. This finding highlights the potentially important role of biologically induced mineralization (BIM) in ferromanganese nodule formation. This BIM hypothesis provides another perspective for understanding ferromanganese nodules’ genetic mechanism, indicating the potential of microorganisms in nodule formation.

<p class="Affiliation">The purposes of this study are: First, to know how the role of supervisors in supervising learning administrations and academic supervision to Islamic education teachers at school. Second, to know supervisors’ performance based on standard. Third, to know the handicaps in doing supervisors’ duties. Fourth, to know supervisors’ strategy in solving the problems. The Method used in this research is descriptive analysis with qualitative approaches. Based on the research goals above, it can be conluded: First, based on document analysis and teachers’ administration observation that teachers have had complete documents as guide lines in doing teaching learning process. However, most of teachers still adopted lesson planning they made from other schools. Second, that the supervisors of Islamic Relegious Education in doing their tasks is not maximum yet, such as monitoring eight national standards of education and assessing teachers’ performance. There are even other tasks, such as the activity of guiding and evaluating professional teachers which were not carried out. Third, the handicaps faced by supervisors were (1) the teachers who were absent in teachers’ forum, (2) the difficulties of changing teachers’ mindset in arranging program, and (3) the weakness of mastering Information Communication Technology. Fourth, the solutions offered are (1) the supervision goal is supposed to be communicated and comprehended by teachers, principals, and supervisors, (2) the supervision should be well-planned, constructive, and democratic, (3) the teachers should be involved in the process of planning and implementing supervision so that they understand procedures and advantages of supervision in developing their professionalism, (4) the supervision program should motivate to the changes in the teaching learning activity.</p><p class="Affiliation"><strong><em>Kata kunci</em></strong><em>: supervisi, akademik, PAI, profesionalisme.</em></p>

In 1958, the Chinese Communist leadership agreed on a revised set of basic principles governing the relationship between the Party and the Army, These principles, which involved a move away from the professionalisation of the Army, became summarised in the slogans “politics in command” and “the Party commands the gun. The changes reflected a decision to continue to rely on a revolutionary strategy based on people's war despite the decision to devote substantial resources to nuclear weapons. After a bitter dispute between the Party and the Army, Mao decided to reject Khrushchev's proposals for a unified nuclear command and to rely on an expanded military force to deter an American attack. Moreover, the Party emphasised the need to put military units to work in the economy. It thus turned the Army away from increased professionalism and technical training towards organising the militia and participating in economic construction work. Like other salient features of the Maoist view revealed at that time the 1958 guide lines for Party-Army relations assumed that a satisfactory balance could be achieved between professional modernisation and the role of the expert, on the one hand, and political mobilisation or “revolutionisation” (ideological “redness”), on the other. It was the Army's resistance to these moves that led to the purge of major military leaders, including P'eng Teh-huai in 1959.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

AbstractIntuitions guide decision-making, and looking to the evolutionary history of humans illuminates why some behavioral responses are more intuitive than others. Yet a place remains for cognitive processes to second-guess intuitive responses – that is, to be reflective – and individual differences abound in automatic, intuitive processing as well.
