Time Domain FE Seismic Analysis of Mat-Supported Jack-Up Structure on Soft Clay

Soil-structure-interaction (SSI) analyses are essential to evaluate the seismic performance of important structures before finalizing their structural design. SSI under seismic condition involves much more complex interaction with soil compared to the dynamic loads having source on the structure. Seismic SSI analysis requires due consideration of site-specific and structure-specific properties to estimate the actual ground motion (scattered motion) experienced at the base of the structure, and subsequently the effects of the scattered motion on the structure. Most challenging aspect of seismic SSI analysis is to implement transmitting boundaries that absorb the artificial reflections of stress waves at the truncated interface of the finite and infinite domains, while allowing the seismic waves to enter the finite domain. In this paper, the time domain implementation of seismic analysis of a soil-structure system is presented using classical discrete models of structure and interactive force boundary conditions for soil. These models represent typical SSI systems- a single Degree of Freedom (DOF) of a spherical cavity with mass attached to its wall, a two DOF system consisting of a mass attached by a nonlinear spring to a semi-infinite rod on elastic foundation, and a three DOF system with additional DOFs for modelling the structural stiffness and damping. The convolution integral representing the force boundary condition on the truncated interface, is evaluated interactively using UAMP user-subroutine in ABAQUS and applied as concentrated forces at the interface (truncated interface) nodes of the bounded domain or generalized-structure domain. The verification problems presented in the paper show the satisfactory performance of the developed MATLAB code and ABAQUS implementation with FORTRAN user-subroutines. The classical phenomena associated with the dynamic soil-structure systems are discussed through the present work.

The rapid penetration of one or more of the foundations of a mobile jack-up rig into the seabed is an ongoing major problem in the offshore industry, with the potential to cause major damage to the structure and endangering any personnel on board. A recent example is the jack-up drilling rig Perro Negro 6 incident happened near the mouth of the Congo river in July 2013 with one of the rig’s crew of 103 reported missing and six others injured. This uncontrollable displacement is due to a form of failure known as punch through failure and commonly occurs on stratified seabed profiles. It has been reported that unexpected punch-through accidents have resulted in both rig damage and lost drilling time at a rate of 1 incident per annum with consequential costs estimated at between US$1 and US$10 million [1]. This paper presents the bearing capacity profiles and associated soil flow mechanisms of a common spudcan foundation penetrating into a three layer soft-stiff-soft clay soil through the use of large deformation finite element (LDFE) analysis. The Remeshing and Interpolation with Small Strain (RITSS) [2, 3] technique was implemented in the software package AFENA [4] to conduct the LDFE analysis. Both soil layer thickness and soil layer strength ratios were varied to study their effect on the spudcan penetration responses. The LDFE results of spudcan penetration into the soft-stiff-soft clay soils were calibrated by existing centrifuge test data. A parametric study was then conducted to study the bearing capacity responses and soil flow mechanisms during spudcan large penetrations by varying the soil layer strength ratio and relative layer thickness to the diameter of spudcan. It was found that there were three types of bearing responses during continuous penetration of spudcan: (a) when the top soft layer is relatively thin, the spudcan bearing response was similar to that of two layer soils with stiff over soft clays; (b) when the top soil layer thickness is medium, a peak resistance is observed when spudcan penetrates into the middle stiff layer followed by reduction; (c) when the soil layer is thick, the peak resistance occurs when spudcan gets into the bottom soft soil layer. The critical thickness of top soil layer is a function of soil strength ratio and middle stiff soil layer thickness. The bearing response types were also corresponding to the soil cavity formations during spudcan initial penetration.

The shear modulus and damping ratio of undisturbed Bangkok clay samples were measured using a cyclic triaxial apparatus. Although abundant literature on this topic exists, selection of the most suitable empirical correlation for a seismic analysis cannot be done unless site specific data are obtained. The apparatus used in this research can measure the stress–strain relationships from strain levels of about 0.01%. The equivalent shear modulus measured at these strains was about 80% of the value obtained from the shear wave velocity measurements. The degradation curves of the equivalent shear modulus fell into the ranges reported in the literature, for clay having similar plasticity. The damping ratios varied from about 4–5% at small strains (0.01%) to about 25–30% at large strains (10%). The effects of load frequency and cyclic stress history on the shear modulus and damping ratio were also investigated. An increase in load frequency from 0.1 to 1.0 Hz had no influence on the shear modulus characteristic, but it did result in a slight decrease in the damping ratio. The effects of the small amplitude cyclic stress history on the subsequently measured shear modulus and damping ratio were almost negligible when the changes in void ratio were taken into account.Key words: soft clay, shear modulus, damping ratio, cyclic triaxial test, cyclic stress history.

The main codes of practice governing jack-up preloading presently do not consider the possibility of beneficial effects of soil resistance generated by leg chord and leg brace members as they move downwards through disturbed soil that has been squeezed past the spudcan to form part of the backfill. This paper argues that these effects can be significant for the special case of deep penetrations in soft clay. An approximate method of estimating the effects is proposed and discussed. Results are found to be broadly consistent with recent centrifuge model tests and numerical analyses. Further work is recommended to explore these potentially important and certainly complex effects.

Abstract Recently, wind farm development has gained more traction in Asian countries such as Taiwan, which are seismically active. Compared to Europe, the offshore wind structures need to be designed for these additional extreme environmental conditions. For monopiles, these calculations can typically be performed in an integrated way in the wind turbine load calculation, but for jackets the superelement (SE) approach remains preferred. At the time of writing different approaches are being applied in the industry to apply the SE approach for seismic time domain analysis. This work explains and compares three different methods, based on calculations performed in offshore strength assessment tool Sesam and aeroelastic tool BHawC. When including additional interface nodes at the foundation model bottom into the SE to which the seismic accelerations can be applied in BHawC similarly as in the re-tracking run in Sesam, the results between BHawC and Sesam are nearidentical. Using a normal SE, which only includes an interface node for the connection to the wind turbine tower bottom, and including the response due to seismic displacements into the SE load file gives a match between BHawC and Sesam, and closely matches the results of the case with additional interface nodes. Doing the same but only including the dynamic response of the interface point relative to a frame of reference moving with the rigid body motions as caused by the seismic accelerations into the SE load file, significant differences occur. This is due to the lack of the loading effect of rigid body motions. The same conclusions on how these methods compare can be drawn when using different wind and wave cases. The presented results give insights into the differences between the methods and how the choice of method may influence the results.

For the purpose of structural health monitoring (SHM), it is beneficial to develop a robust and accurate numerical strategy so as to identify key parameters of offshore structures. In this regard, it is difficult to use time-domain methods as the time history of wave load is not available unless output-only methods can be developed. Alternatively, spectral analysis widely used in offshore engineering to predict structural responses due to random wave conditions can be used. Thus the power spectral density (PSD) of structural response may be more appropriate than time history of structural responses in defining the objective (fitness) function for system identification of offshore structures. By minimizing PSD differences between measurements and simulations, the proposed numerical strategy is completely carried out in frequency domain, which can avoid inherent problems rising from random phase angles and unknown initial conditions in time domain. A jack-up platform is studied in the numerical study. A search space reduction method (SSRM) incorporating the use of genetic algorithms (GA) as well as a substructure approach are adopted to improve the accuracy and efficiency of identification. As a result, the stiffness parameters of jack-up legs can be well identified even under fairly noisy conditions.

The overall bearing capacity of a jack-up rig under horizontal load is conducted using finite element models that consider the deck–foundation–soil interaction. In these models, the simplified horizontal load acts on the deck and increases until the platform loses its stability. The effects of the self-weight of the platform W and load direction α on the ultimate horizontal bearing capacity Hult are investigated, and W- Hult failure envelopes under different α conditions are obtained. Two typical seabed types, including the double-layer seabed of sand overlying soft clay and the single-layer seabed of sand, are considered. The results show that a critical self-weight Wcritical exists in the double-layer seabed. Based on Wcritical, the failure of the platform presents two different modes. When W <  Wcritical, the windward leg is pulled up, and Hult increases with the increase in W. When W >  Wcritical, the failure mode is the leeward leg or legs puncturing the bearing sand layer, and Hult decreases with the increase in W. In the single-layer seabed, the failure mode is the windward leg being pulled up, and Hult increases with the increase in W throughout the whole range. The W- Hult envelopes in these two types of seabeds are basically the same when W <  Wcritical.
