AbstractThe life cycle of the avian parasitic fliesPhilornisMeinert (Diptera: Muscidae) is poorly known, limiting the understanding of the ecology of these flies, including interactions with their hosts. We provide data on length and survival of pupal and adult stages and the duration of the pre-oviposition period ofPhilornis torquansNielsen. Specimens were collected at larval and pupal stages from infested broods. The pupal stage lasted on average 10.5 days and adults lived up to 100 days in the laboratory. At least 90.2% of larvae pupated and 85.7% of the latter emerged as adults. For individuals collected as larvae, pupal mortality was 3.5 times higher than for those collected as pupae. Females laid from 1–8 clutches in their lifetime and deposited, on average, 41 eggs per female (range: 1–148). Females collected as pupae were larger and had shorter pre-oviposition periods and lifespans than females collected as larvae, but there were no differences in the total eggs laid by these females. This is the first information on reproductive parameters of a subcutaneous species ofPhilornis, and forms the basis for studies on conditions required for reproduction of this species in captivity.

Some effects on the adult of environmental conditions during the larval and pupal stages ofSpodoptera littoralis(Boisd.) were investigated in the laboratory in Israel. The conditions studied were temperature during larval life, temperature and humidity during pupal life and the density at which larvae were kept, and their effects were found by varying one of them at a time. Except for such variations, larvae were reared in batches of 30–50 at 22–24°C. and 60–70 per cent, relative humidity, pupae were kept at 23–24°C. and 70–80 per cent, relative humidity, and adults were kept in pairs at 20–21 °C. and 75–85 per cent, relative humidity. Larvae were fed on clover leaves and adults on sugar solution.High temperature during the larval stage reduced fecundity; whereas at 22°C. the resultant females laid about 1,200 eggs each and 12·5 per cent, produced non-viable ones only, at 30°C. they averaged about 700 eggs each and 50 per cent, produced non-viable ones only. Temperature during the pupal stage affected fecundity similarly and life-span to a lesser extent; at 20 and 34°C., 40 and 5 per cent, of the resultant adults lived 15 days or more, the percentages of females laying only non-viable eggs were nil and 70 and the mean numbers of eggs laid were about 1650 and 700, of which about 60 and 2 per cent, were viable, respectively. High temperatures were directly inimical to pupae, less than half of which survived at 26°C. or over.The effects of humidity during the pupal stage were in general less than those of temperature. The mean life-span was longest in adults from pupae kept at an intermediate humidity of 76 per cent., as also were the proportion of barren females and the mean number of eggs laid; the percentage of viable eggs was reduced only amongst those from females kept as pupae at over 95 per cent, relative humidity. Pupal mortality was affected only by low relative humidities, which raised it.Larvae reared singly tended to be brighter in colour than those reared in batches of 30–50; fewer died and the subsequent pupae were heavier and longer. The mean life-span of the resultant adults was longer, and they laid more eggs.The results are compared with those of other workers onS. littoralisand other insects.

The stick-insect Graeffea crouanii (Le Guillou) is a pest of coconuts of local and sporadic importance in the south Pacific and there have been recent outbreaks on Taveuni Island, in the Fiji group. As there appear to be virtually no parasites of the nymphal stages, a preliminary search was made in 1960 for parasites of other palm-feeding Phasmatids in Melanesia. This revealed the presence of Tachinidae parasitising species of the genera Ophicrania and Megacrania, and in 1963–64 these were studied in the Solomon Islands. The Tachinidae comprise at least two species of Mycteromyiella: M. laetifica (Mesnil) attacking both O. leveri Günth. and a species of Megacrania in the western Solomons, and M. phasmatophaga Crosskey attacking 0. leveri and some other Phasmatid hosts on Guadalcanal. The early stages of both species of Mycteromyiella are briefly described and compared, with notes on their bionomics. There was no evidence of any egg parasite attacking Ophicrania in the Solomons.O. leveri, which is very closely related to G. crouanii, has never caused significant damage to coconuts in the Solomon Islands, except on the small island of Savo, from which its Tachinid parasites appear to be absent. It is concluded that Mycteromyiella, especially M. laetifica, which appears to be fairly specific, may be an important factor in the control of O. leveri in the Solomons.The principal hosts of O. leveri are the sago palm (Metroxylon salomonense) and species of arecoid palms in the forest, on all of which the insect has better scope for concealment than on coconuts. Collections of nearly 6,000 examples of O. leveri from sago palm on Kolombangara island, in the western Solomons, in August 1963-February 1964 showed an average parasitism by Mycteromyiella laetifica of 28 per cent. Eggs of the Tachinid are laid on nymphs of all instars as well as on adults. The host-survival rate was about 30 per cent, for nymphs and 50 per cent, for adults.A small number of parasitised specimens of O. leveri from Kolombangara were released on Savo, but there was no evidence six months later that M. laetifica had become established there.Breeding trials at Honiara showed that O. leveri could be reared successfully in captivity but not M. laetifica, which shows reluctance to mate in cages and has a narrow range of environmental tolerance in the pupal stage, in which a mortality of at least 70 per cent, seems unavoidable under the conditions practicable for transportation of this stage by air.Between October 1963 and March 1964 nearly 960 puparia of M. laetifica were sent to Fiji. About half of them were used for breeding trials, which showed that the Tachinid could be reared through G. crouanii in captivity but could not be maintained. The rest were released on Taveuni, but a further outbreak of G. crouanii during 1965 yielded no evidence that M. laetifica had become established.Material of M. phasmatophaga, which has a more restricted choice of environment than M. laetifica, but also a somewhat greater potentiality for killing its host, was obtained by exposing O. leveri on seedling coconut palms planted in the forest at Honiara. Quantities were insufficient for transmission to Fiji; 150 parasitised hosts were released on Savo but samples of O. leveri collected there six months later gave no indication of its establishment.Despite this initial failure, it is considered that Mycteromyiella could bring about the control of G. crouanii in Fiji and other affected Pacific islands, and the means by which this might be achieved are discussed.

Diadiplosis multifila was recently discovered feeding on Planococcus citri eggs in vineyards in the semi-arid northeast region of Brazil. The objective of the present paper was to study the biology of D. multifila in P. citri under constant temperatures of 22, 25, 28, and 31 °C. We evaluated its embryonic stage, egg viability, development period, survival of larva and pupa, longevity, average number of eggs, and sex ratio. D. multifila completed its life cycle in all temperatures except for 31 °C. The length of the embryonic period ranged from 4 to 7 days. The larval stage was longer at a temperature of 22 °C (8.6 days) and shorter at 28 °C (6.4). The pupal stage exhibited durations of 12.9, 10.4, and 8.2 days for temperatures of 22, 25, and 28 °C, respectively. The average viability in the larval stage was 97% and 83% in the pupal stage. The total life cycle took 16.7 (28 °C), 20 (25 °C), and 27 (22 °C) days to complete. The adults lived for approximately 2 days and the females produced on average 34, 25, and 19 eggs at temperatures of 22, 25, and 28 °C, respectively. The sex ratio varied from 0.46 to 0.54.

The study aimes to investigate the effects of leaves & fruits ethanolic extract of Duranta repens L. on biological performance for all stages of life cycle of the mosquito Culex pipiens piepiens L., For this purpose the mosquitoes were reared in the laboratory till the fourth generation .Different concentrations of leaves (800,1000,1200,1400ppm) and fruits (800,1000,1200ppm) were tested on (eggs,larval stages,pupal stages and the adult stages). The results revealed that the extracts gave highest mortality rate for the eggs at(100%) compared with control,fruits extract shown highest mortality rate of the four larval instars (100%)at 1200ppm compared with leave extract at(80,50,33.33,20%).Also the extract caused a high mortality rate for pupal stage compared with fruits extract at(76.66,53.33%)respectively.Also ethanolic extract caused a 83.33,76.66% for male &femail. Developmental deformation was observed.. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicate that the leaves &fruits extracts of Duranta repens L., , can be widely and effectively used in the control of mosquito.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the development and reproduction of the zoophytophagous predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed kale, broccoli and cabbage affects its. Nymphs and adults of this predator were fed on larvae of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) as prey with kale, cabbage, or broccoli. In the nymph period, the duration and prey consumption were similar with all the Brassicacea cultivar. However, nymph viability was higher for predators with broccoli leaves. The mean weight of 5th-instar nymphs, newly emerged females and the sex ratio were similar among the Brassicacea cultivars, while newly emerged males were heavier with kale and broccoli leaves. The supply of broccoli leaves resulted in greater oviposition, higher number of eggs per egg mass and longer longevity of P. nigrispinus males and females. Furthermore, the consumption of P. xylostella larvae by adult predators was higher with these cultivars. The net reproductive rate (R0) and mean generation time (T) were highest for predators with prey and broccoli leaves. The reproductive parameters of P. nigrispinus were enhanced when fed on P. xylostella larvae with and broccoli leaves, which can be an alternative diet in laboratory rearing of this predator.

AbstractOllarianus balli (Van D.), a leafhopper vector of disease-associated mycoplasma-like organisms, was found to be rare in Jamaica. Its distribution and frequency were governed primarily by the distribution and density of its specific field host, the wild legume Rhynchosia minima on which it completes its life-cycle. Under suitable temperature conditions, O. balli was easily reared in captivity on R. minima and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), although the latter is not a natural host. It oviposited into the hypodermal tissues covering veins of sterns, petioles and the abaxial surfaces of older leaves. Eggs hatched 10–15 days after oviposition and there were five nymphal instars. Instar 1 was distinct from instars 2–5 which, except for size, were similar in appearance. The first adults matured some three weeks after the final moult. There appeared to be little difference in the average life-span of males and females of O. balli.

Amblyomma rotundatum is an ixodid tick that infests ectothermic animals and reproduces exclusively by parthenogenesis. This tick has been frequently reported to infest reptiles and amphibians, under natural conditions and sometimes in captivity. It was described in Brazil and several other countries of South, Central and North America. Although many studies have reported aspects of its biology, none of them has used regularly either ophidian as hosts, or controlled temperature, humidity and luminosity for parasitic stages. The objective of this experiment was to study the life cycle of A. rotundatum feeding on Viperidae snakes under room controlled conditions at 27 ± 1 ºC temperature, 85 ± 10% relative humidity and 12:12 hours photoperiod for parasitic stages, and under B.O.D incubator conditions at 27 ± 1 ºC temperature, 85 ± 10% relative humidity and scotophase for non-parasitic stages. The total duration of the life cycle ranged from 56 to 163 days (mean of 105 days). Two-host life cycle was observed for most of the ixodid population studied.
