AbstractBaronia brevicornisSalvin (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) is one of the most enigmatic butterflies in the world and possibly represents the most ancient lineage among the superfamily Papilionoidea. Its geographic distribution is remote from that of all its potential close relatives and many of its biological and ecological characteristics are unique among the suborder Rhopalocera. One of its particularities is that the occurrence plots of this species seem to be independent, each representing individual populations, despite the fact that the host plant:Acacia cochliacanthaHumboldt and Bonpland ex Willdenow (Fabaceae), is one of the most common Mexican Fabaceae species. Our results show that noB. brevicornispopulations occur if the host plant does not cover at least two-thirds of the locality. Even in the most favourable zones, the landscape occupancy of the butterfly does not exceed 2.5% of the available habitat even when its host plant covers 50% of the area. The average density of adults was 840 individuals/ha in favourable habitats, frequently on areas of around 3 ha, below of 1400 m. Using the BIOMOD2 package and the largest available set of abiotic conditions for Mexico implemented in the WorldClim database, we propose a revised potential distribution and discuss the results of our model with field occurrence data. Evolutionary and conservation issues are discussed in the light of our results.

In this study we attempted to access further information on the geographical distribution of the endangered lizard Liolaemus lutzae, estimating its potential distribution through the maximum entropy algorithm. For this purpose, we related its points of occurrence with matrices of environmental variables. After examining the correlation between environmental matrices, we selected 10 for model construction. The main variables influencing the current geographic distribution of L. lutzae were the diurnal temperature range and altitude. The species endemism seemed to be a consequence of a reduction of the original distribution area. Alternatively, the resulting model may reflect the geographic distribution of an ancestral lineage, since the model selected areas of occurrence of the two other species of Liolaemus from Brazil (L. arambarensis and L. occipitalis), all living in sand dune habitats and having psamophilic habits. Due to the high loss rate of habitat occupied by the species, the conservation and recovery of the remaining areas affected by human actions is essential.

Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. (Lygaeidae, Hemiptera) are small insects that is found in many parts of the world. They are beneficial because they eat a multitude of insect pests in agriculture. Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. are insects that receive research attention in Florida and elsewhere because of the benefits that this species give to plants (Mead, 2001). Big-eyed bugs reproduce many generations in a year on weeds, perennial crops, bushes. In spring the female big-eyed bugs start laying eggs on the bud, the leaves of the host plant. Understanding the biology and the role of predator Geocoris spp. in ecosystem will provide an alternative method in sustainable agriculture development. In this short review, we discuss some convenient diets for the application of mass rearing Geocoris spp.

The Peruvian Peppertree (Schinus molle L.) is an evergreen tree native to semiarid environments of Peru and Bolivia in South America. This tree has been introduced and widely planted for ornamental and forestry purposes in several semiarid regions of the world because its seedlings are easily established and have a high survival rate; it also grows quickly, and it is tolerant of dry climates. We compared the global and regional niches of naturalized and planted populations of S. molle in order to examine the invasive stages and potential distribution of this species in four regions of the world. This work provides a novel approach for understanding the invasion dynamics of S. molle in these areas and elucidates the ecological processes that bring about such invasions. Most naturalized and planted populations were found to be in equilibrium with the environment. In its native range as well as in Australia and South Africa the models of the coverage area of habitat suitability for natural populations were the highest, whereas the coverage area of planted populations was lower. For planted populations in Australia and South Africa, a large percentage of predicted presences fell within sink populations. The invasion stages of S. molle vary across regions in its adventive range; this result may be attributable to residence time as well as climatic and anthropic factors that have contributed to the spread of populations.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão sistemática da produção científica do uso da modelagem de distribuição de espécies para restauração florestal. As buscas de artigos científicos nas bases de dados Scopus e Web of Science para os últimos 15 anos foram realizadas no mês de dezembro de 2020 utilizando os termos: “ecological modeling” OR “biodiversity modeling” OR “predictive models” OR “niche modeling" OR "habitat models" AND “species distribution” OR "geographic distribution" OR “potential distribution” AND “forest restoration” OR “restoration ecology”. Para as análises estatísticas e gráficos dos dados brutos foi utilizado o pacote Bibliometrix do software R. Os dados brutos foram refinados por meio da seleção dos estudos que atenderam aos seguintes critérios: (i) estudos publicados em revistas científicas com fator de impacto igual ou superior a 2,0; (ii) estudos em que o título ou resumo mencionasse as palavras restauração florestal ou restauração ecológica; (iii) estudos que avaliaram o uso de modelagem de distribuição de espécies como auxílio aos projetos e programas de restauração florestal ou restauração ecológica. Foram encontrados 44 documentos publicados em 30 periódicos científicos com média de 3,91 publicações por ano; 18,55 citações por documento; 197 autores, sendo 3 documentos com autoria única. Assim pode-se concluir que o uso de modelagem de distribuição de espécies para restauração florestal no mundo é muito recente, e no Brasil é incipiente com baixos números de artigos publicados, mas apresenta tendência de crescimento por conta da sua significativa contribuição para melhorar as taxas de sucesso dos projetos de restauração.

AbstractInformation on the Aphis species that feed on evening primroses (Oenothera spp.) has been summarized in the catalogue of the aphid species inhabiting herbaceous plants of the world (Blackman & Eastop, 2006). Recent descriptions of the European species, A. holoenotherae (Rakauskas, 2007), that appeared to be a sibling of the American A. oenotherae, demonstrated the need of reexamining the current state of knowledge of the Aphis species inhabiting evening primroses in Europe. The present study, based on published original data, revealed nine aphid species of the genus Aphis which are capable of living on Oenothera plants in Europe. Only two of them are really dependent on Oenothera species during their life cycle: A. oenotherae Oestlund and A. holoenotherae Rakauskas. They have different life cycles and host plant spectrum, although they are very close in their morphology. Processus terminalis length appeared to be the most reliable morphological character in distinguishing between apterous and alate viviparous females, and males of A. oenotherae and A. holoenotherae at the present time. A. grossulariae is not a typical Oenothera-feeder in Europe, occurring on evening primroses only by chance. Other Aphis species (epilobiaria, fabae, sambuci, praeterita, frangulae, nasturtii), are opportunistic inhabitants of Oenothera plants. Information about host specificity and morphology of the Oenothera-inhabiting European Aphis species is summarized, and a key for the entire range of species found living on European Oenothera is provided.

<em>Abstract.</em>—The Chilean fishes of the family Macrouridae have historically been of little interest to the fisheries community in the SE Pacific. Landings of these fishes have only been officially recorded since 2000. Nevertheless there is evidence that macrourids have been incidentally caught as by-catch since the middle of the 20<sup>th</sup> century. Species of the genera <em>Coelorinchus </em>(formerly known as <em>Caelorinchus</em>), <em>Coryphaenoides</em>, <em>Lucigadus</em>, <em>Macrourus </em>and <em>Nezumia </em>are common as by-catch. It now appears important to apply fisheries management to these species, recording them as a unit, but obtaining objective data for each species. This should include an overall perspective on the species having a wide geographic distribution.
