AbstractThe oribatid mite genusCeratozetesBerlese is represented in America north of Mexico by 21 previously described species known from forest, grassland, subarctic and arctic soils and litter, and canopy habitats. The closely related genusCeratozetoidesShaldybina is represented in America north of Mexico only byC. cisalpinus(Berlese). Three new species ofCeratozetesfrom North America are described:C. biporosussp. nov.from forest habitats of southeastern North America,C. cyclopeasp. nov.from montane habitats in western North America, andC. pseudomediocrissp. nov.from forest habitats of western North America. An analysis of the systematic relationships of 23 of these species based on adult characters indicates thatCeratozetes, excludingCeratozetoides, is paraphyletic. The clade that includesCeratozetoides cisalpinusand 15 species ofCeratozetesincludes most species for which immatures are known. One sister clade includesCeratozetes cyclopea,C. enodis, andC. fjellbergiand another includesC. kutchin, C. parvulus, andC. thienemanni.The decision whether or not these 6 species should be retained inCeratozetessensu strictoawaits discovery of their immatures and molecular analysis.

AbstractThe oribatid mite family Mycobatidae is represented in America north of Mexico by the eight genera, Cyrtozetes Behan-Pelletier, Ceresella Pavlitshenko, Guatemalozetes Mahunka, Minunthozetes Hull, Mycobates Hull, Pelopsis Hall, Punctoribates Berlese, and Zachvatkinibates Shaldybina. Species occur in forests, grasslands, and arctic soils, in canopy habitats, and in the marine and freshwater littoral zone. Three new mycobatid species from North America are described: Ceresella reevesisp. nov. from forest habitats of western North America, Cyrtozetes lindoaesp. nov. from canopy habitats of western Canada, and Punctoribates weigmannisp. nov. from forest litter in eastern North America. The descriptions of Pelopsis bifurcatus (Ewing) and Punctoribates punctum (C.L. Koch) are expanded based on specimens from North America. Punctoribates palustris (Banks) is redescribed based on specimens from throughout North America. Punctoribates armipes (Banks) is considered a junior subjective synonym of P. palustris (Banks). New distribution records are given for Guatemalozetes danos Behan-Pelletier and Ryabinin and Minunthozetes semirufus (Koch). Diagnoses are given for each genus discussed, and keys are provided to the eight genera of Mycobatidae of North America and to species of Cyrtozetes and Punctoribates, genera not recently revised.

Four new species of the oribatid mite genus Carabodes from western North America are described, based on adult specimens: Carabodes california known from California, C. colorado from British Columbia, Alberta, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, C. dickinsoni from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California, and C. hoh from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. We provide an expanded diagnosis of the genus, including information on integumental birefringence, chaetotaxy, palptarsal setation, and position of lyrifissure iad. We present a table of character states and a diagnostic key for the 28 species, as well as a summary of their distributions.

Review of recently collected material of Eohiodon from North America suggests that there are two valid species, E. rosei (Hussakof) and E. woodroffi Wilson. Eohiodon falcatus Grande is identical to E. woodruffi in known skeletal features and nearly all meristic features and is treated as a junior synonym of the latter. The fossil genus Eohiodon Cavender differs from Hiodon Lesueur, which is known from both fossil and extant species, in numerous meristic and osteological features. The caudal skeleton in Eohiodon is nearly identical to that in Hiodon.The traditionally accepted Notopteroidei, containing Lycopteridae, Hiodontidae, and Notopteridae, is a polypheletic group. The Asian fossil family Lycopteridae is not more closely related to Hiodontidae than it is to other taxa in the Osteoglossomorpha, but is sister to all other Osteoglossomorpha. The Hiodontiformes sensu stricto, including only the family Hiodontidae, is the sister-group of the Osteoglossiformes. This family is not more closely related to notopterids than to other taxa in Osteoglossiformes. The Notopteridae are most closely related to the Mormyroidea; together they and the fossil family Ostariostomidae constitute the sister-group of the Osteoglossoidei.Fossil records of Hiodontiformes sensu stricto and Notopteroidei indicate a widespread pre-Neogene biogeographic range of these freshwater teleosts, suggesting that extinction must have been involved in the Cenozoic evolution of these two osteoglossomorph sublineages.

AbstractMost major modern families of Hymenoptera were established in the Mesozoic, but the diversifications within ecologically key trophic guilds and lineages that significantly influence the character of modern terrestrial ecosystems – bees (Apiformes), ants (Formicidae), social Vespidae, parasitoids (Ichneumonidae), and phytophagous Tenthredinoidea – were previously known to occur mostly in the middle to late Eocene. We find these changes earlier, seen here in the early Eocene Okanagan Highlands fossil deposits of western North America. Some of these may have occurred even earlier, but have been obscured by taphonomic processes. We provide an overview of the Okanagan Highlands Hymenoptera to family level and in some cases below that, with a minimum of 25 named families and at least 30 when those tentatively assigned or distinct at family level, but not named are included. Some are poorly known as fossils (Trigonalidae, Siricidae, Peradeniidae, Monomachidae), and some represent the oldest confirmed occurrences (Trigonalidae, Pompilidae, Sphecidaesensu stricto, Peradeniidae, Monomachidae, and possibly Halictidae). Some taxa previously thought to be relictual or extinct by the end of the Cretaceous (Angarosphecidae, Archaeoscoliinae, some Diapriidae) are present and sometimes abundant in the early Eocene. Living relatives of some taxa are now present in different climate regimes or on different continents.

The osmylid subfamily Protosmylinae is revised based on our emended diagnosis: Petrushevskia Martynova, 1958 and Mesosmylidus Jepson et al., 2012 are excluded (both considered Osmylidae incertae sedis), and Sogjuta Martynova, 1958 is transferred to it from the Mesosmylininae. The late Eocene genus Protosmylus Krüger, 1913 is considered a junior synonym of Osmylidia Cockerell, 1908 based on a distinct apomorphy (deeply forked MA in the hind wing), syn. nov. Three new species of Osmylidia from the early Eocene of North America are described: O. donnae sp. nov. from Quilchena, O. glastrai sp. nov. from Republic, Washington, USA, and an unnamed species of Osmylidia is reported from Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park, British Columbia (all localities of the Okanagan Highlands series), and O. taliae sp. nov. from the Green River Formation of Colorado, USA.

AbstractThe oribatid mite genus Zachvatkinibates, found in littoral, forest canopy, and forest litter habitats, includes some species showing distinct sexual dimorphism in the octotaxic system of dermal glands, and others lacking this dimorphism. Three new species in this genus are described on the basis of adults, each of which shows species-specific sexual dimorphism: Z. nortonisp. nov. and Z. schatzisp. nov. from beach debris in British Columbia, Canada, and Z. shaldybinaesp. nov. from the littoral in eastern and northeastern Canada. We discuss the association of sexual dimorphism with the littoral habitat of species in this genus and, more generally, the expression of sexually dimorphic porose areas in Ceratozetoidea. We revise the diagnosis for the genus Zachvatkinibates and present a revised key for adults of Zachvatkinibates species of North America north of Mexico.

AbstractThe oribatid mite genus Ametroproctus, soil and litter inhabitants in the desert, alpine, and montane regions of western North America, is discussed. Two subgenera are recognized, Ametroproctus s. str. and Coropoculia. Their respective type-species, A. oresbios Higgins and Woolley and C. reticulata Aoki and Fujikawa, are redescribed, and newly discovered immatures of both species are described. Four new species are proposed, A. (Ametroproctus) tuberculosus, A. (A.) aridus, A. (Coropoculia) beringianus, and A. (C.) canningsi. A new generic diagnosis is given, as well as a key to subgenera and species known from North America.

Understanding diversity in the genus Xerocomellus in western North America has been obscured by morphological variability, widespread use of species epithets typified by specimens from Europe and eastern North America, misunderstood phylogenetic relationships, and species complexes. We collected extensively and used genetic and morphological data to establish the occurrence of ten Xerocomellus species in western North America. We generated ITS sequences from five type collections and from vouchered representative collections to clarify our understanding of existing species concepts. We describe three new species (Xerocomellus atropurpureus, X. diffractus, and X. salicicola) and propose two new combinations (X. amylosporus and X. mendocinensis), transfer Boletus coccyginus to Hortiboletus, and provide a dichotomous key to species of Xerocomellus in western North America.
