Thousands of lepidopterous larvae representing a wide range of species are collected every year in Ontario by the Forest Insect Survey. Many of these require microscopic examination for identification. During a 10-year period I have only found one specimen with an extra pedal appendage.In June 1963, a larva with an extra anal proleg on the right side was collected by H. G. McPhee near Thessalon, Ont., on the north shore of Lake Huron. The species was Epinotia solandriana Linn., a leaf roller on white birch, Betula papyrifera Marsh. A subsequent large collection from the same area contained only normal specimens.

In 1957, some officers of the Forest Insect Survey of Canada discovered a species ofNepticulamining the leaves of white birch (Betula papyriferaMarsh.) and yellow birch (Betula luteaMichx. f.) in Ontario. At that time the species was considered to be undescribed, but to confirm this it was necessary to study the life-history. This has been done by Mr. O. H. Lindquist, Forest Insect Laboratory, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the results of his studies are being presented in a companion paper. His investigations confirmed that the species had not been named and the following description is presented.

The Bruce spanworrn, Operophtera bruceata (Hulst), is most common in the mid latitudes of the North American Continent; in Canada it occurs from Newfoundland to the interior of British Columbia (Prentice, In Press) and has been reported from Vermont and Wisconsin in the United States (Craighead, 1950.) Three outbreaks of this insect have been recorded in Alberta. The first occurred in 1903 (de Gryse, 1925) and was apparently of short duration. The second reported by Wolley Dod (1913) occurred in 1913 and denuded hundreds of acres of aspen poplar. Heavy defoliation in the third outbreak became evident in 1957 (Brown, 1957) but an examination of Forest Insect Survey records revealed that population buildup began about 1951. The outbreak continued to expand until 1958 and began to decline in 1959; by 1961 populations were again low except for one or two isolated areas where moderate to low populations persisted. At the peak of the outbreak in 1958 approximately 50,000 square miies were moderately or heavily infested and many more lightly infested.

Conglomeratic rocks are present near the top of a dominantly arenaceous sequence, previously ascribed entirely to the Huronian Mississagi Formation, in a belt extending for about 60 km east of Blind River, on the north shore of Lake Huron. These conglomeratic rocks and the massive and planar laminated sandstones which overlie them are herein named the Lauzon member, after the thickest exposed development of the sequence at Lauzon Lake in Striker Township. The presence of dropstones in the sequence at Lauzon Lake suggests that the member is best considered as part of the Bruce Formation. Conglomeratic rocks within the Lauzon member include granule-supported boulder, cobble, and pebble conglomerate; sand-supported cobble and pebble conglomerate; intact framework graded and non-graded pebble and cobble conglomerates; stratified conglomerates and conglomeratic sandstones; and disrupt framework conglomerates. These conglomeratic rocks lack abundant mud-grade matrix material and, hence, are readily distinguished from (glaciogenic?) mixtites of the Ramsay Lake, Bruce, and Gowganda Formations. Conglomerates of the Lauzon member were probably deposited from sediment gravity flows within a series of subaqueous fans or fan head valleys which may have been initiated by contemporaneous movements along a precursor to the Murray Fault system at the onset of the Bruce glaciation.

Mapping in the McGregor Bay area of Ontario has shown the presence of a sequence of formations which closely resembles that of the original Huronian of the Bruce Mines–Blind River area. Iron-rich siltstones and argillites above the Lorrain formation are correlated with the lower part of the Animikie iron-formations of the Port Arthur region of Lake Superior and the north central United States. The oldest Proterozoic rocks of the region south of Lake Superior are considered to be correlatives of the Cobalt group of the north shore of Lake Huron.

New data on the boundaries of the distribution range of the Lindholm rock lizard (Darevskia lindholmi), an endemic of the Crimean Peninsula, are presented. This petrophilous lizard inhabit a wide range of biotopes in various landscape levels of the Mountainous Crimea. The upper boundary of D. lindholmi distribution in the southwest of the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains reaches an elevation of 1,520 m a.s.l. (Ai-Petrinskaya Yayla, KemalEgerek Mountain), while on the other high uplands with altitudes above 1.5 km and colder climate (Babugan and Chatyrdag), the species was traced only up to 1,250–1,320 m a.s.l. The northern border of D. lindholmi range in the western part of the Crimean Mountains runs along the Outer Foothill Range (the right bank of the Alma River), while in the eastern part it corresponds the northernmost rocky massifs of the Inner Foothill Range to the north of 45º N latitude. Isolated marginal populations found in the forest-steppe or phrygana-steppe landscapes of the Foothills and arid Southeastern Coast differs significantly in their distance from the main habitat of the species, lizards’ abundance and density. A hypothetical history of the formation of the current range of the Lindholm lizard is discussed.

Huronian feldspathic sandstones 30 km north of Thessalon (the Morin Township area) rest noncomformably upon Archean rocks and are overlain by the Huronian Gowganda Formation. They contain uraniferous pyritic quartz-pebble orthoconglomerate, similar to the uraniferous conglomerate ore of the Elliot Lake – Blind River area. The sandstones also contain paraconglomerate units at several stratigraphic levels which are lithologically similar to the Ramsay Lake and Bruce Formations.Trends in Huronian stratigraphy on the North Shore of Lake Huron suggest that in the Morin Township area the Quirke Lake Group is absent and the McKim and Pecors Formations, which contain much argillite, are likely to be very thin or absent. Thus the feldspathic sandstones of the Morin Township area are assigned to the Matinenda and the Mississagi Formations. The most continuous paraconglomerate unit might be correlated with the Ramsay Lake Formation.Huronian feldspathic sandstones lying nonconformably upon Archean rocks 16 km northeast of Sault Ste Marie (the 'Soo Series') and 50 km north of Sudbury, have many features in common with the sequence of the Morin Township area. Stratigraphic subdivision of these two sequences and finer delimitation of potential uraniferous units may be aided by using paraconglomerates such as the Ramsay Lake Formation as marker units. Such subdivision however will be uncertain until the number, exact stratigraphic position and the areal continuity of these paraconglomerates can be assessed better.

A large number of imported items found in the occupation layers of archaeological sites in the Trans-Urals and Western Siberia suggest that, in the Middle Ages, these regions were on the periphery of trade routes and were involved in global historical events. In this connection, the dating of material culture provides details about trade and economic, as well as social and political, aspects of the life of communities of the past. One of the new archaeological sites allowing the dynamics of material culture to be traced is a multi-layered Papskoye settlement. This site constitutes a fortification having two areas and powerful defensive lines, located on top of the right-bank terrace of the Iset River. In this study, structures attributed to different chronological periods were analysed and artefacts were collected (7th century BC — 14th century AD). Nevertheless, collections of items dating back to the High Middle Ages (late 9th — early 14th centuries) are the most representative as they most objectively reflect the historical and cultural processes that took place in this region. Most of the finds of arrowheads, elements of cloth-ing and horse harnesses, as well as household items, in the Papskoye settlement belong to this time. In this study, we used a comparative-typological method followed by the identification of the types of things. In order to establish the most accurate chronological framework, as well as to determine the primary centres for the production of certain items, we applied the method of analogy using a wide range of material culture from the neighbouring territories, which include Altai, Mongolia, Volga region, Kama area, the Caucasus, the north of Western Siberia, etc. In this study, we identified two chronological phases within the High Middle Ages using the materials of the Papskoye fortified settlement: 1) late 9th — 12th centuries; 2) late 12th — early 14th centuries. They correspond to the period when the carriers of the Yudino and Chiyalik cultures inhabited this site. In addition, a large number of direct analogies with the neighbouring territories suggests that the territory of the forest-steppe Trans-Urals was located on the periphery of trade routes through which imports came from Southern Siberia, Volga Bulgaria and the Upper Kama area.
