Insects and Other Invertebrates from Nests of the Cardinal, Richmondena cardinalis (L.), at London, Ontario

During the year 1955 Dr. D. M. Scott and Mr. R. E. Lemon conducted a study of the nesting habits of the cardinal, Richmondena cardinalis (L.), on the campus of the University of Western Ontario and in areas adjacent to the campus in London, Ontario. After the study of the breeding cycle at each nest was completed, some of the nests mere removed from their sites and put in brown paper bags and given to the writer for examination for their content of insects and other invertebrates. Each nest was torn apart over a white porcelain tray and the creatures falling on the tray were collected and preserved. The specimens so collected were distributed to the following taxonomists for identification (USNM refers to the United States National Museum): P. D. Ashlock, USNM (Miridae), E. W. Strandtmann, Texas Technological College, Lubbock, Texas (Orinthonyssus), W. W. Wirth, USNM (Culicoides).

At the time of my retirement on December 31, 1950, a number of notes on synonymy and generic transfers had accumulated. Many of these are thought worthy of publication and this paper is made up of a number of them. Those included notes which deal with Nearctic forms will clarify the treatment of certlin genera and species in the catalog of North American Hymenoptera, now in process of publication by the U.S. Department of Agiculture, the Chalcidoidea section of which catalog has assembled and edited by O. Peck of the Canadian Department of Agriculture but which is based in great part upon the classification and arrangement of the collection in the United States National Museum. The catalog will probably appear in print before this paper does. Several notes dealing with forms not known to occur in the Nearctic region, hence not appearing in the catalog, are also included.

As noted below the two North American species described in Syndipnus by workers appear to belong in other genrra. In Europe the gunus is represented by nearly a score of species and has been reviewed in recent years by two writers (1, 2). North American collections contain very few representatives of the genus; after combining the material in the National Collection with that from the United States National Museum, the latter kindly loaned to me by Mr. R. A. Cushman, only thirty-seven specimens are available for study.

The following notes are based on the material in the Canadian National Collection and in the collections of the United States National Museum, the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences.In all of the three American species of Lyperopherus, the flattened side margins of the pronotum are gradually widened posteriorly to include the outer of the basal impressions. All are flightless and have the elytra widest slightly behind the middle.

Genetic resources of temperate berry crops were collected 7 to 27 July 2004 in Hokkaido, Japan, under a bilateral agreement between the United States and Japan. This expedition was a collaborative effort between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the University of New Hampshire, and Akita Prefectural College of Agriculture, Japan. Additional assistance was provided by the Hokkaido Governmental Plant Genetic Resources Center, several Forest Research Stations of the Hokkaido University, and private botanists. The expedition obtained 100 accessions encompassing eight genera and 29 species. In all, 84 seedlots, and 23 plants were obtained. The genera collected included: Actinidia, Fragaria, Lonicera, Morus, Ribes, Rubus, Sambucus, and Vaccinium. Plant and seed accessions from this trip are preserved and distributed from the USDA ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis, Ore., and from MAFF. The target genus for this expedition was Fragaria, so the trip was planned for July. Multiple samples of the two Japanese diploid strawberry species, Fragaria iinumae Makino and F. nipponica Makino (synonym = F. yezoensis H. Hara) were obtained during their prime ripening time. Ribes, Rubus, and Vaccinium fruits ripened later in the summer, but were collected when fruit were observed. Unfortunately, seeds of some of these accessions proved to be immature or nonviable upon extraction. We suggest that expeditions to collect these genera should be planned for late August. Morphological and molecular evaluation of collected germplasm is underway at the USDA ARS Corvallis Repository and at the University of New Hampshire.
