The species discussed below have been received from the United States National Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, Cambridge Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cornell University, Michigan State College, British Museum of Natural History, and Deutsches Entomologisches Institute, or are in the Snow Entomological Collection at the University of Kansas. The writer is very grateful to these institutions for the privilege of studying this material. These species will be keyed and figured in a forthcoming revision of the New World Plecia.

Plate XIV shows two photographs of a model I have recently made in order to show the outward aspect of Peloneustes philarchus, a pliosaur from the Oxford Clay. It is based on the complete mounted skeleton now in the British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, a part of the well-known Leeds collection. This skeleton has a length of 10 ft. 6 in., and my model is 23 in. long, so the scale is roughly about 1:5. No other museum possesses a mounted skeleton of this genus, the nearest thing to which is the Trinacromerum, described as a Cretaceous plesiosaur by Dr. S. W. Williston in his work on Water Reptiles of the Past and Present, Chicago, 1915, where a restoration is shown on p. 89, fig. 42. The specimen is in the Museum of the University of Kansas. This same Leeds collection has given us two fine mounted skeletons of the genus Cryptoclidus, of the family Elasmosauridæ, and now we have also this fine mounted skeleton of Peloneustes, which belongs to the Pliosauridae. Hence it is now possible for geologists to see at a glance the chief characteristics of these two families, and my hope is that this model may be of some use to students of Palæontology. In making the model I have had the advantage of much valuable assistance from my friend, Mr. E. Godwin, an accomplished sculptor, without whose assistance I doubt if it could ever have been completed; for when I attempted to model the head I found a task that was beyond my power to accomplish properly, not having had any training in the art of sculpture.

The opportunity to study some of de Koninck's (1883) type specimens from the Institut Royal de sciences Naturelle de Belgique (RMNS), specimens from the British Museum of Natural History (BMNH), and from the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University (MCZ) has provided insight into the taxonomic relationships of some polyplacophoran taxa. It is evident that errors have occurred in relating various specimens to taxa which differ significantly. Two examples of this related to a Devonian species in Germany and a Permian species in the United States National Museum of Natural History (USNM) are clarified and illustrated.

Gerald Handerson Thayer (1883–1939) was an artist, writer and naturalist who worked in North and South America, Europe and the West Indies. In the Lesser Antilles, Thayer made substantial contributions to the knowledge and conservation of birds in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Thayer observed and collected birds throughout much of St Vincent and on many of the Grenadines from January 1924 through to December 1925. Although he produced a preliminary manuscript containing interesting distributional notes and which is an early record of the region's ornithology, Thayer never published the results of his work in the islands. Some 413 bird and bird egg specimens have survived from his work in St Vincent and the Grenadines and are now housed in the American Museum of Natural History (New York City) and the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Four hundred and fifty eight specimens of birds and eggs collected by Gerald and his father, Abbott, from other countries are held in museums in the United States.

Every child has a right to an education. In the United States, the issue is not necessarily about access to a school but access to a quality education. With strict compulsory education laws, more than 50 million students enrolled in primary and secondary schools, and billions of dollars spent annually on public and private education, American children surely have access to buildings and classrooms. However, because of a complex and competitive system of shared policymaking among national, state, and local governments, not all schools are created equal nor are equal education opportunities available for the poor, minorities, and underprivileged. One manifestation of this inequity is the lack of qualified teachers in many urban and rural schools to teach certain subjects such as science, mathematics, and technology. The purpose of this article is to describe a partnership model between two major institutions (The American Museum of Natural History and The City University of New York) and the program designed to improve the way teachers are trained and children are taught and introduced to the world of science. These two institutions have partnered on various projects over the years to expand educational opportunity especially in the teaching of science. One of the more successful projects is Seminars on Science (SoS), an online teacher education and professional development program, that connects teachers across the United States and around the world to cutting-edge research and provides them with powerful classroom resources. This article provides the institutional perspectives, the challenges and the strategies that fostered this partnership.

In 1957 James R. Beer, Edwin F. Cook and Robert G. Schwab, of the University of Minnesota, conducted an investigation of mammals and their ectoparasites in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. The area studied included varied habitats in the general vicinity of the Southwestern Research Station of the American Museum of Natural History at Portal. An account of this investigation has now been published (Beer et al., 1959).

The importance of the manuscript pontificals for the study of the medieval evolution of the Latin liturgy needs no reaffirmation here. The state of the published descriptions and classifications of these manuscripts, however, is not commensurate in all cases with what their importance would lead one to expect.Ehrensberger has provided a full description of the manuscript pontificasl preserved in the Vatican Library; although this is no longer recent, it is invaluable in the absence of a complete catalogue of the Vatican manuscripts. The monumental work of Leroquais describes in detail the manuscript pontificals extant in the public libraries in France; as most of the pontificals in France appear to be in public libraries, this work is fairly comprehensive in its coverage. Dom Anselm Strittmatter has listed and classified the liturgical manuscripts preserved in the United States. For pontificals in other countries, however, there exist no such reference works. Professor Richard Kay of the University of Kansas is currently compiling a handlist in which all the manuscript pontificals extant throughout the world will be cited and briefly identified, but not fully described. Until this appears, anyone working on pontificals or on ordines normally included in pontificals will quite likely have to work systematically through innumerable catalogues of manuscript collections to cover every library, city by city, for a frequently minimal return.

William Diller Matthew was the eldest child of Dr. G. E. Matthew, of New Brunswick, an amateur geologist, who, by his great collections and excellent papers, added much to our knowledge of that part of Canada. Dr. Matthew was born on February 19,1871, in St. John, New Brunswick ; throughout his life he retained an interest in this town, visiting it yearly, except when abroad, and retaining his Canadian nationality during nearly forty years’ residence in the United States. Dr. Matthew was introduced to geological methods by his father, and sent at first to the small University of Halifax, whence in 1892 he proceeded to Columbia University as a graduate-student, there studying geology, mineralogy and metallurgy. He graduated Ph.D. in 1895. In that year he was selected by Professor H. F. Osborn, whose classes he had attended, as assistant in the department of Vertebrate Palaeontology in the American Museum of Natural History, New York. In this department he worked for thirty-two years, finally becoming Curator-in-chief of the division of geology, mineralogy and palaeontology.
