A NEW SPECIES OF BRACHYCYRTUS FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA (HYMEN.; ICHNEUMONIDAE)

It was with some surprise that the writer encountered a representative of this rare and, until recently, little known genus, from a locality in south-eastern British Columbia. The specimen in question is a female reared at Ottawa, by officers of the Forest Insect Survey of the Division of Entomology, Irom the cocoon of a Chrysopid beaten from Engelmann spruce, Aug. 26, 1938, by Mr. D. N. Ross of the British Columbia Forest Service, in the vicinity of Bayne's Lake, B. C. The adult parasite emerged in the laboratory, Feb. 20, 1939.

In 1957, some officers of the Forest Insect Survey of Canada discovered a species ofNepticulamining the leaves of white birch (Betula papyriferaMarsh.) and yellow birch (Betula luteaMichx. f.) in Ontario. At that time the species was considered to be undescribed, but to confirm this it was necessary to study the life-history. This has been done by Mr. O. H. Lindquist, Forest Insect Laboratory, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the results of his studies are being presented in a companion paper. His investigations confirmed that the species had not been named and the following description is presented.

The majority of specimens on which the following descriptions are based were collected as larvae and reared to maturity in British Columbia in the Forest Insect Survey, Forest Insect Investigations. Though this procedure has certain definite advantages, it presents some difficulties in description, the adults often being darker in colour and smaller in size than those captured in flight. It was also observed that the structures of the genitalia are sometimes more delicate in reared specimens, so that single adults were, at times, difficult to associate with the descriptions and with genitalia mounts in the Canadian National Collection. Five new species, a new subspecies, and the previously unknown female of a sixth species are described in this paper. Brief notes on the biology, the distribution, and host plants of some previously recorded species have also been included.

Occella impi, a new species of sea poacher, is described from a single specimen captured in the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. Occella impi differs from other species of Occella in having spinous plates on the breast, the anus nearer the anal fin, and fewer anal rays; also, the numbers of bony body plates are distinctive. A key to the known species of Occella, based primarily on the numbers of bony body plates, is included. The size of the maxillary barbel and number of infralateral plates are shown to be characteristic of the genera Occella and Stellerina.

A new species of kathlaniid nematode, Megalobatrachonema waldeni, from the intestine of the northwestern salamander, Ambystoma gracile, in British Columbia is described. The new species is placed in the subgenus Megalobatrachonema (Chabaudgolvania) as it lacks valves in the oesophageal bulb. Megalobatrachonema waldeni differs from the two other members of this subgenus, M. elongatum (Baird, 1958) and M. terdentatum (Linstow, 1890), in having large cervical alae and distinctly separate lips, and in lacking hypodermal lip peduncles and a pseudosucker. Megalobatrachonema waldeni has simpler onchia, smaller spicules, and a more prominent swelling at the base of the oesophageal corpus than M. elongatum, and differs from M. terdentatum by its distinct corpus swelling, more anterior excretory pore, fewer caudal papillae, and longer tail.

A new species of colonial athecate hydroid, Rhysia fletcheri, is described from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and from Friday Harbor, Washington, U.S.A. Its relationship to Rhysia autumnalis Brinckmann from the Mediterranean and Rhysia halecii (Hickson and Gravely) from the Antarctic and Japan is discussed. Rhysia fletcheri differs from Rhysia autumnalis and Rhysia halecii in the gastrozooid having distinctive cnidocyst clusters on its hypostome and few, thick tentacles. Most of its female gonozooids have no tentacles. Colonies of R. fletcheri are without dactylozooids. The majority of R. fletcheri colonies are found growing on large barnacles or among the hydrorhiza of large thecate hydrozoans. Rhysia fletcheri occurs in relatively sheltered waters of the San Juan Islands and on the exposed rocky coast of southern Vancouver Island.

Lampetra macrostoma n.sp., a freshwater parasitic lamprey, is distinguished from related species L. tridentata, L. lethophaga, L. folletti, L. minima, and L. similis by its parasitic habit and very large disc. Other characters distinguishing the species from L. tridentata are its longer prebranchial length, large eye, weakly pigmented velar tentacles, and its ability to remain in freshwater. The recently metamorphosed form readily survives in freshwater and probably is non-anadromous even though it can survive in salt water. The new species has been discovered in two lakes on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, where it attacks large numbers of resident salmonids. Because of its ability to survive and feed in freshwater, it poses a definite threat to freshwater fishes.Key words: lamprey, new species, non-anadromous lamprey, salmonid parasitism

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

The genus Saga is a genus of generally large predatory bush-cricket species. It includes 13 taxa in the Palaearctic region. In this research, eight species belonging to Saga (Tettigoniidae, Saginae) were sampled during field studies in different regions of Anatolia of Turkey between 2010 and 2018 (except one specimen). The bioacoustic parameters of these species recorded during the field or in laboratory conditions and the male calling song descriptions, as well as the oscillographic illustrations and distribution maps are given. A new population of Saga found from the South-Eastern Taurus (Hakkari province), which is affiliated to a new species and shows similarity to S. ephippigera, along with the morphological and bioacoustical descriptions of Saga hakkarica sp. n. Şirin & Taylan from Turkey, are also given. The relationships between the new species and the closest taxa are discussed using morphological and bioacoustical characters. The structural investigations of the male calling songs reveal three different bioacoustic groups affiliated to eight Anatolian Saga species; as (i) Ephippigera group (S. syriaca + (S. ephippigera + Saga hakkarica), (ii) Natoliae group (S. natoliae + (S. beieri + (S. longicaudata + S. puella) and (iii) S. cappadocica.

A new species of spider crab is described from two male specimens collected from the southeastern Arabian Sea. This species differs from its congeners in the absence of uograstric granule on carapace, the presence of two granules along lateral margin of carapace at branchial region, the presence of granules on P2–P4 dactyli and the constricted distal tip of the male first gonopod.
