In a culture of flies sent to Dr. O. A. Johannsen by Dr. C. W. Metz of Johns Hopkins, there proves to be a new species of Sciara. This insect is being used in research in genetics and it was thought best to have the insect described as soon as possible. According to Doctor Metz, “The original female under No. 6986, was collected by Mr. J. P. Reynolds from Sykes' greenhouse at Guilford, North Carolina, December 5, 1933.”

A New Species

The eastern Nearctic species of the genus Soyedina Ricker, 1952 (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) are reviewed. Two morphology-based species groups are proposed based on epiproct characteristics. Soyedina sheldoni sp. nov. is described from the southern Appalachian Highland region of western North Carolina. A distribution map and a dichotomous key to all nine Nearctic species are provided.

Abstract A new endemic species of land planarian, Diporodemus merridithae, belonging to subfamily Microplaninae is described from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is the first report of a new land planarian of the subfamily Microplaninae from the United States since 1954 (Hyman 1954). Species external and internal anatomy is described using photographs and a drawing and notes on species distribution, habitat, and conservation are provided. Identifications and previous reports of land planarians from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the United States, and Europe is discussed, as are collections of two cohabitants and the observation of asexual reproduction observed in one cohabitant specimen.

Moraria hudsoni n. sp. is described from Trails End Bay in Lake Michigan and Prentiss Bay in Lake Huron, Michigan, USA. The new species differs from its congeners in chaetotaxy, body ornamentation, and other characters. We review published records of members of Moraria from North and Central America; no species is known from South America. Species of this genus have been found in the mountains of southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, but none of these has been validly described. In North America, eight species have been recorded from Alaska, Canada, and the conterminous USA as far south as North Carolina. We report new geographical records of M. affinis from Virginia, and of both M. cristata and M. virginiana from Maryland and Virginia. We provide a tabular key to aid in identification of the named species of Moraria in North America.
