Diastictis benigna, n. sp.Expands 23 mm. Palpi rather long, heavy, drooping, blue-gray; front, thorax and abdomen blue-gray, the latter whitish lined posteriorly on segments. Fore wings bluish-gray, lightest on middle field, mixed with some black scales; basal line faint or obsolete, marked by a black spot on costa; middle line beginning with black spot at costa, then through black lengthened discal spot, then obsolete; outer line with black spot at costa, otherwise obsolete; outer field darker towards margin, with a large brown submarginal shading between 3 and 5. Hind wings even, smooth, blue-gray. Beneath dark bluidh fuscous on all wings, becoming blackish along outer margins; costa of fore wings speckled with black and gray.

Tetralopha formosella, n. sp.Expands 18 mm. Head nearly pure white; thorax white with black scales intermixed; fore wings pure white, sometimes intermixed with black, and with black spot on costa to basal line; basal line black, with three long black teeth on outer side; middle field whitish, costa towards base black; along inner margin and reaching half way across wing, dull brick red, broken by median cross scale ridge, which is of intermingled black and white; outer line white, edged on both sides with blackish; outer field grayish, mixed with black, much darker along costa to apex; hind wings fuscous, much darker along outer edge; beneath fuscous on all wings, an outer lighter cross line showing on all wings.

In March 2010, citrus black spot symptoms were observed on sweet orange trees in a grove near Immokalee, FL. Symptoms observed on fruit included hard spot, cracked spot, and early virulent spot. Hard spot lesions were up to 5 mm, depressed with a chocolate margin and a necrotic, tan center, often with black pycnidia (140 to 200 μm) present. Cracked spot lesions were large (15 mm), dark brown, with diffuse margins and raised cracks. In some cases, hard spots formed in the center of lesions. Early virulent spot lesions were small (up to 7 mm long), bright red, irregular, indented, and often with many pycnidia. In addition, small (2 to 3 mm), elliptical, reddish brown leaf lesions with depressed tan centers were observed on some trees with symptomatic fruit. Chlorotic halos appeared as they aged. Most leaves had single lesions, occasionally up to four per leaf. Tissue pieces from hard spots and early virulent spots were placed aseptically on potato dextrose agar (PDA), oatmeal agar, or carrot agar and incubated with 12 h of light and dark at 24°C. Cultures that grew colonies within a week were discarded. Fourteen single-spore cultures were obtained from the isolates that grew slower than the Guignardia mangiferae reference cultures, although pycnidia formed more rapidly in the G. mangiferae cultures (1). No sexual structures were observed. Cultures on half-PDA were black and cordlike with irregular margins with numerous pycnidia, often bearing white cirrhi after 14 days. Conidia (7.1 to 7.8 × 10.3 to 11.8 μm) were hyaline, aseptate, multiguttulate, ovoid with a flattened base surrounded by a hyaline matrix (0.4 to 0.6 μm) and a hyaline appendage on the rounded apex, corresponding to published descriptions of G. citricarpa (anomorph Phyllosticta citricarpa) (1). A yellow pigment was seen in oatmeal agar surrounding G. citricarpa, but not G. mangiferae colonies as previously reported (1,2). DNA was extracted from lesions and cultures and amplified with species-specific primers (2). DNA was also extracted from G. mangiferae and healthy citrus fruit. The G. citricarpa-specific primers produced a 300-bp band from fruit lesions and pure cultures. G. mangiferae-specific primers produced 290-bp bands with DNA from G. mangiferae cultures. The internally transcribed spacer (ITS) of the rRNA gene, translation-elongation factor (TEF), and actin gene regions were sequenced from G. citricarpa isolates and deposited in GenBank. These sequences had 100% homology with G. citricarpa ITS sequences from South Africa and Brazil, 100% homology with TEF, and 99% homology with actin of a Brazilian isolate. Pathogenicity tests with G. citricarpa were not done because the organism infects immature fruit and has an incubation period of at least 6 months (3). In addition, quarantine restrictions limit work with the organism outside a contained facility. To our knowledge, this is the first report of black spot in North America. The initial infested area was ~57 km2. The disease is of great importance to the Florida citrus industry because it causes serious blemishes and significant yield reduction, especially on the most commonly grown ‘Valencia’ sweet orange. Also, the presence of the disease in Florida may affect market access because G. citricarpa is considered a quarantine pathogen by the United States and internationally. References: (1) R. P. Contrary to ideas that Cretaceous fresh waters contained few teleosts, there were several taxa of Esocoidei (pikes and relatives) in North American Cretaceous rivers. Dentaries and palatines of Campanian to Maastrichtian age all have C-shaped tooth bases and other distinctive features of shape and foramina. The fossils include at least three distinct kinds, two of which are described here as new genera and species in the Esocidae: Estesesox foxi n. gen. and sp. and Oldmanesox canadensis n. gen. and sp.These old, diverse, and apparently primitive specimens show that pikes radiated when Eurasia and North America were still joined. Some references in the literature to the Cretaceous fish Platacodon Marsh are based on referred dentaries that are here identified as esocoid fossils. The Esocidae are the first example of a family of Recent North American freshwater teleosts that has been shown to have speciated in Cretaceous fresh waters and survived the terminal Cretaceous extinction.

Since the publication of the writer's “Revision of the Aphelininæ of North America” (Bulletin 1, Technical Series, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Division of Entomology, 1895), the discovery of new forms, and especially of new genera, has been of very infrequent occurence. Species have been received from all parts of the world, owing to the extraordinary and world-wide development of interest in scale insects, which are the principal hosts of the Aphelininæ, yet nearly all of the forms thus received have been species already described, which have been carried with their hosts upon live plants to many different regions. It is, therefore, interesting to discover a new genus, even from a country like Chile, whose parasitic Hymenoptera are so little known. A most interesting feature of the discovery is that the new genus was reared from Aspidiotus hederœ (nerii) together with three of the cosmopolitan forms, namely, Aspidiotiphagus citrinus (Craw); Coccophagus immaculatus, How., and Prospalta aurantii, How. The writer is indebted to Mr. Edwyn C. Reed, of Rancagua, Chile, for this sending, as well as for many other favours.

Two new genera of Chamaemyiidae (Diptera: Lauxanioidea) are described and illustrated, including: Chamaethrix gen. nov. (type species Chamaethrix necopina sp. nov.), possibly a predator of Cinara ponderosae (Williams) on Pinus ponderosa in the southwestern United States; and Vitaleucopis gen. nov. (type species Vitaleucopis nidolkah sp. nov.; other included species Vitaleucopis astonea (McAlpine), comb. nov., and Vitaleucopis scopulus sp. nov.), predators of Cinara aphids and possibly adelgids on Pinaceae in western North America. Immature stages are discussed or described and illustrated for some taxa, including the eggs of Chamaethrix necopina and Vitaleucopis nidolkah; and the third instars and puparia of Vitaleucopis nidolkah.

Descriptions are given of the new genera Neopygospio (type N. laminifera, nov.) and Novobranchus (type N. pacificus, nov.); of the new species Nereis (Eunereis) wailesi, Spio butleri, Neopygospio laminifera, Novobranchus pacificus; and of the new variety pacificus of Distylia volutacornis (Montagu). All are from the Pacific coast of Canada. Synonymy is proposed of Lepidonotus caelorus Moore with L. squamatus (Linné), and of Goniada eximia Ehlers with Ophioglycera gigantea Verrill. In addition to the new species and variety, records of three species new to western Canada are presented, and notes on others. Thirteen species and a variety new to eastern Canada are recorded, one of them new to North America.

AbstractA new genus of Gonianotini, Spinigernotus, is described with Sphragisticus simulatus Barber 1918 as type-species. S. simulatus, known only from New Mexico, is reported from Mexico. The new genus Cordillonotus, and type-species C. stellatus, are described from British Columbia, California, Oregon, and Washington. Cordillonotus is tentatively placed in the tribe Rhyparochromini.

AbstractThe new generic names Metamelanea Henssen and Strotnatella Henssen are described inthe Lichinaceae. They are denned by the developmental morphology of the ascocarp and thallus structure. In both genera the thallus is subfruticose, and the cyanobiont a single-celled member of the Chroococcales. The genus Metamelanea is based on the type species M.umbonata Henssen, newly described from the Alps, and M. melambola (Tuck.) Henssen comb, nov., found in North America. The genus Strotnatella is based on the single species, S. bermudana (Riddle) Henssen, formerly Psorotichia bermudana Riddle. The new genera are compared with species of other genera of the Lichinaceae: Gyrocollema, Lecidopyrenopsis and Porocyphus; some micrographs of Lecidopyrenopsis corticola Vainio. are also included. The new combination Porocyphus ocellatus(Th. Fr.) Henssen is made; Pyrenopsis triptococcus Nyl. is selected as lectotype of Pyrenopsis subgen. Cladopsis Nyl. (syn. Cladopsis (Nyl) Hue).

AbstractNew genera Hirtodeceia, Marmarodeceia, Oncodometopus, Pachyopella, Poecilolycia, Trisapromyza, and Xeniconeura are described. The first two are exclusively Neotropical; the others occur also in the Nearctic Region. Relationships with other genera are discussed, and included species are listed. Homoneura (Euhomoneura) pictipennis Hendel is a preoccupied name, and the species is renamed and assigned to Marmarodeceia. Lyciella Collin is discussed, and L. rorida (Fallén) is recorded for the first time in North America.
