AbstractLaboratory studies of the food preferences of several adult carabids showed that Amara aenea DeG., Anisodactylus sanctaecrucis F., Harpalus affinis Schr., and Stenolophus comma F. were polyphagous and readily fed on the seeds of several weeds as well as on young codling moth larvae and apple maggot pupae. H. affinis also attacked 4th and 5th instar codling moth larvae and pupae more readily than the other species. Pterostichus melanarius III. showed a strong preference for the larger prey such as 5th instar codling moth larvae, earthworms, and scarabaeid larvae. The potential of these species as predators of the codling moth and the apple maggot is discussed.

AbstractPterostichus melanarius Ill. was the predominant ground beetle recovered in pitfall traps in three blocks of apple trees at Jordan Station, Ont. In one block, C, the number of mature fifth-instar larvae of Cydia pomonella (L.) seeking overwintering sites was related significantly (r2 = 0.5476, P < 0.05) to the number of P. melanarius caught, but was not related significantly (r2 = 0.1181, P > 0.10) to the proportion of beetles that were serologically positive. The proportion of larvae pupating also was not related significantly (r2 = 0.2014, P > 0.10) to the number of P. melanarius. The total number of all predators caught was related significantly (r2 = 0.4490, P < 0.05) to the number of larvae present, but the proportion of larvae that pupated was not related significantly (r2 = 0.3606, P > 0.05) to the total number of predators.In block A, in 1983–1985, the number of mature larvae of C. pomonella seeking overwintering sites was not related significantly (r2 = 0.3763, 0.3619, and 0.5042, P > 0.05, respectively) to the number of P. melanarius taken in pitfall traps. In both blocks A and B, the number of serologically positive beetles was not related significantly (r2 = 0.3824 and 0.7921, P > 0.10, respectively) to the number of larvae seeking overwintering sites.Amara aenea DeG., Anisodactylus sanctaecrucis F., Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositum Say, Clivinia impressifrons LeC., Diplochaeila impressicolis (Dej.), Harpalus aeneus F., and Pterostichus chalcites Say also gave positive serological reactions to the antiserum against C. pomonella.The occurrence of other species of Lepidoptera did not affect significantly the results obtained for C. pomonella.

AbstractObservations of a free-living population of Bosca's newt, Triturus boscai, show that courtship behaviour in nature is similar to the behaviour observed in earlier laboratory studies. Complementary evidence was obtained on the behaviour called flick, which is sometimes inserted at the end of the static display phase, and may be viewed as an equivalent behaviour to the retreat display of the other small-bodied newt species. Sexual interference in the natural population was mainly caused by males. Two characteristic male behaviour patterns were recognised, the waiting position and the push-tail. Females tend to withdraw from situations of interference. Courtship sequences solely consisting of orientation and spermatophore transfer phases, so-called short-circuit sequences, may be interpreted as a male strategy to avoid the very severe male-to-male interference that exists in a wild population.

AbstractLaboratory experiments with juvenile hormone analogues on Cydia pomonella (L.) showed that Cecropia C17 juvenile hormone (methyl 10,ll-epoxy-3,7,ll-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate) was the most active of the 28 compounds tested. When applied to four-hour-old eggs at 0.1 μg/egg, the hormone caused 100% failure in embryogenesis, while the other compounds were at least five times less effective. Depending on the time since ecdysis and the dose, juvenile hormone mimics applied to last-instar larvae resulted in a wide range of intermediate forms. Against three-day-old last-instar larvae, the Cecropia C17 hormone gave 100% inhibition of development at a dose of 1 μg/larva, while three other compounds (methyl 10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate, ethyl 11-chloro-3,7,11-trimethyl-2-dodecenoate and ethyl 3,7,11-tri-methyl-2,4-dodecadienoate) gave the same effect at 2–5 μg/larva. Against newly emerged adults, the last two compounds at 10–50 μg/insect reduced fecundity and fertility to 0–81% and 0–50%, respectively, of their normal levels.

This study examined two sections of “Reporting and Writing I.” One taught writing for text and broadcast concurrently, whereas the other taught these skills sequentially. A student survey found a strong preference for learning subjects sequentially. Outside evaluators assessing final stories rated text projects from students taught sequentially slightly higher than text stories from students taught concurrently, but rated broadcast stories from students taught concurrently slightly higher than broadcast stories from students taught sequentially.

Various precursors of divalent copper have been treated with the meta-disubstituted phenylene-based proligand POC(H)OP (1,3-(i-Pr2PO)2C6H4) with the objective of preparing classical pincer complexes (POCOP)CuX. However, in no case was such species obtained, presumably owing to the difficult C–H metallation step. Analogous reactions of monovalent precursors were also unsuccessful, whereas reaction of POC(H)OP with CuI under different conditions gave the non-metallated adducts {(μ, κP, [Formula: see text]-POC(H)OP)Cu(μ-Ι)}2, 1, {(μ, κP, [Formula: see text]-POC(H)OP)Cu2(μ-Ι)2(DMAP)2}, 2 (DMAP = 4-dimethylaminopyridine), and {(μ, κP, [Formula: see text]-POC(H)OP)Cu2(μ3-Ι)2}2, 3. Treating 1 with DMAP gave the adduct 2, whereas 3 could be obtained by treating 1 with BuLi or by sublimation of 1. The solid state structures of these complexes revealed the tetrahedral geometry that might be anticipated for the d10 Cu(I) centers, in addition to fairly close I–H distances; on the other hand, no C–H interaction (agostic or otherwise) was observed with the Cu centers in any of these structures. The unsuccessful metallation of the C(2)–H moiety is thought to be a result of the strong preference of monovalent copper center to form bridging interactions with iodide and the POC(H)OP ligand; this appears to prevent the approach of the central carbon of the ligand to the Cu centers.

AbstractField and laboratory studies at Ibadan, Nigeria, showed that the young nymphs of Zonocerus variegatus (L.) normally reject cassava after biting it and die if they are confined on growing leaves. Later instars will eat cassava, especially when deprived of food for some time, but the adults progressively lose weight when restricted to feeding on growing cassava. On cut cassava, on the other hand, extensive feeding occurs and normal growth is maintained. The change from unpalatability to acceptability occurs within about an hour of cutting and is apparently associated with wilting. Cassava produces latex, but this was not distasteful to Zonocerus. The readiness to feed on growing cassava was associated with low levels of hydrogen cyanide production by the leaves; wilted leaves still produced hydrogen cyanide, but at a lower rate than turgid, growing leaves. In the area around Ibadan, Zonocerus regularly defoliates cassava in the latter part of the dry season, probably because a shortage of attractive foods forces the insect to eat cassava.

AbstractSex pheromone-mediated mating disruption using Isomate-C® pheromone dispensers was evaluated as a means of controlling the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, over three consecutive growing seasons in organically managed blocks of apples at two commercial apple orchards in Ontario. The objective of the study was to determine if mating disruption could be used to stabilize or reduce the amount of damage caused by indigenous codling moth populations. The emission rate of the pheromone dispensers was estimated using volumetric and gravimetric methods. Efficacy of the pheromone treatment was assessed by comparing pheromone-baited trap catches of adult male codling moths in pheromone- and insecticide-treated blocks of apples, and by estimating damage caused by first- and second-generation codling moths in pheromone- and insecticide-treated blocks as well as in small plots of apples where the codling moth was not controlled. The estimated average release rate of pheromone varied from 22.2 to 30.3 mg per ha per h. The seasonal total number of adult male moths trapped in the pheromone-treated blocks was from 3.8 to 25.3% of the number trapped in insecticide-treated blocks; during one season at one farm, no moths were trapped in a pheromone-treated block. Treatment with pheromone did not prevent an increase in codling moth damage. At one farm, damage increased ca. 5-fold during the 3-year study. At the other farm, damage increased ca. 4-fold during two consecutive growing seasons in one block and ca. 4-fold during three consecutive seasons in the other block. At both farms there was a marked increase in the amount of damage between the first and second generations of the pest. Possible reasons for the failure of the pheromone treatment to prevent increases in codling moth damage are discussed.

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the K retention properties of several resin-coated (RC), sulfur-coated (SC), and plastic-coated (PC) K fertilizers. Substantial differences in K release were found among the controlled-release K materials, based both on the K content of `Tifgreen' bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burt-Davvy] clippings and on direct measurement of K remaining in fertilizer granules in the field over time. One SC material appeared to release K too rapidly, and one RC material appeared to release K too slowly to be useful for providing extended plant-available K to turfgrass. The other sources appeared to have release characteristics that would be favorable for turfgrass maintenance. Because differences in K release were observed among the sources, a laboratory method for assessing K release would be useful. Toward this-end, models were developed relating K retention of sources in hot water (70C) to K retention under field conditions.

A comparison of the recoveries of Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis from naturally and artificially contaminated mussels and oysters was made. Only C. perfringens was regularly recovered from naturally contaminated shellfish. Laboratory studies showed that this was due to C. perfringens spores retaining viability significantly longer than vegetative cells of the other organisms tested, under marine conditions. Over 97% of presumptive C. perfringens colonies were confirmed as positive. A survey of mussels at 24 sites, over ca. 60 km of coastline, found C. perfringens at 23 but E. coli at only two of the sites. Therefore, enumeration of C. perfringens can indicate fecal pollution where enumeration of E. coli shows none. Also, confirmation of presumptive colonies may not be required, rendering enumeration more rapid. Despite the greater persistence of C. perfringens spores, studies in a commercial depuration tank showed that oysters were cleansed to an acceptable level using a standard 48-h immersion. Depuration was found to be essential because all three organisms tested survived for a considerable period of time in oysters stored dry at 4°C, which is normal commercial practice.
