Background Associations between the quality of nursing care and patient outcomes have been demonstrated globally. However, translation and application of this evidence to robust measurement in pediatric specialty nursing care has been limited. Objectives To test the feasibility and performance of nurse-sensitive measures in pediatric cardiovascular programs. Methods Ten nurse-sensitive measures targeting nursing workforce, care process, and patient outcomes were implemented, and measurement data were collected for 6 months across 9 children’s hospitals in the Consortium of Congenital Cardiac Care–Measurement of Nursing Practice (C4-MNP). Participating sites evaluated the feasibility of collecting data and the usability of the data. Results Variations in nursing workforce characteristics were reported across sites, including proportion of registered nurses with 0 to 2 years of experience, nursing education, and nursing certification. Clinical measurement data on weight gain in infants who have undergone cardiac surgery, unplanned transfer to the cardiac intensive care unit, and pain management highlighted opportunities for improvement in care processes. Overall, each measure received a score of 75% or greater in feasibility and usability. Conclusions Collaborative evaluation of measurement performance, feasibility, and usability provided important information for continued refinement of the measures, development of systems to support data collection, and selection of benchmarks across C4-MNP. Results supported the development of target benchmarks for C4-MNP sites to compare performance, share best practices for improving the quality of pediatric cardiovascular nursing care, and inform nurse staffing models.

Abstract Background: End-of-life care education is required for nurses to acquire the clinical competence necessary for the improvement of the quality of end-of-life nursing care. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nursing care education based on End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) on the knowledge and performance of nurses working in the intensive care unit (ICU).Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design. From among nurses working in the ICU of Golestan and Imam Khomeini hospitals in Ahvaz, Iran, 80 nurses were selected based on the inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups (40 people in each group) using a table of random numbers. Data were collected using a demographic characteristics form, the ELNEC Knowledge Assessment Test (ELNEC-KAT), ‎and the Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice Questionnaire (German Revised Version; PCEP-GR‎).Results: A significant difference was observed between the study groups in terms of the average knowledge score in all 9 modules including nursing care, pain management and control, disease symptom management, ethical/legal issues, culture, communication with the patient and his/her family, loss and grief, death, and quality of life (QOL) (P < 0.001). Moreover, the average performance score of nurses in the fields of preparation for providing palliative care, self-assessment of ability to communicate with dying patients and their relatives, self-assessment of knowledge and skills in palliative care increased significantly in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.001).Conclusions: End-of-life nursing education is recommended as an effective method for promoting knowledge, attitude, performance, and clinical competence among all nurses involved in end-of-life care.

The colostomized person's perceptions regarding sexuality and sexual activity is a major component of quality of life and nursing care, however due to several limitations, the questionnaire only approach, although validated for such applications, has not enough resolution, due to its qualitative approach, to capture more delicate aspects of the impact of an ostomy onto a otherwise healthy patient. In order to correct such bias, a exploratory-descriptive study of a qualitative approach based on Bardain’s content analysis was conducted.  80 colostomized participants were recruited from Stomatology Outpatient Clinics in the Hospital de Base, Regional Hospital of Asa Norte and the Regional Hospital of Gama, Distrito Federal, Brazil. Data was collected through a clinical and sociodemographic questionnaire, as well as an individual interview. The results are presented in five categories: self-concept, leakage issues, odor and gases, stigma, sexual activity and companionship. The analysis suggests that the fulfillment of nursing care ideals, through clear and objective communication, results in the colostomized person's care and can favor in the acceptance of their new way of living. The exchange of knowledge and practices between the colostomized patient and the medical care support crew, in special the nursing care, allows the establishment of strategies that contribute gradually to the full health care, promoting the improvement of the QoL of both the colostomized person as well his/her partner. It is concluded that health services should provide care process in health and nursing, with the purpose of guaranteeing means for the planning of a holistic implementation of health care. This planning should include the psychological support and the educational process that develops one's ability for self-care, which may interfere in the role of sexuality and sexual activity, in addition to the physiological, psychological and social issues.

The quality of basic nursing bachelor programmes nationally and internationally must regularly be assessed to ensure that they fulfil requirements and are appropriate in relation to developments and changes in societies and healthcare systems. There is a need for instruments in helping to assess this. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale could serve as a tool to measure and detect possible differences between universities/university colleges regarding nursing students’ self-reported competence. Totally, 543 nursing students who had just completed their academic three-year nursing bachelor programmes at 10 universities/university colleges in Sweden participated in the study (response rate 71%). The students answered the NPC Scale with its 88 items constituting eight competence areas (CAs) and two overarching themes. The results from using the NPC Scale by the students were then compared between the 10 universities/university colleges. Significant mean score differences were found between the universities/university colleges on all CAs and on both themes. The highest mean score differences were found for the CAs ‘Medical and technical care’ and ‘Documentation and information technology’. The lowest mean score differences were found for the CAs ‘Value-based nursing care’ and ‘Leadership in and development of nursing’. It is concluded that the NPC Scale can serve as a useful tool in national and international assessments of nursing bachelor programmes.

Descritores: Processo de Enfermagem; Saúde Mental Ensino em Saúde.SYSTEMATIZATION OF NURSING AND CLINICAL ASSISTANCE EXPANDED: CHALLENGES FOR MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATIONObjective: The systematization of nursing care is a methodology in order to organize and make nursing care oriented by scientific principles.
