The Transformative Power of Social Media on Emergency and Crisis Management

There is a wind of transformation blowing across the world today. It is changing the face of emergency management and every field of human endeavor. It is called “social media”. These days, social media is redefining crisis preparedness through the increasing participation of the masses in the creation and distribution of content in ways that surpass the capacity of the mass media and public authorities. Public-generated content has been found to be useful in all phases of preparedness. Unfortunately, most public safety authorities are still suspicious of using social media in engaging and disseminating information. This article examines this new area of transformation that is having significant consequences on public safety and public life. As the scenario unfolds, emergency managers have a tough time choosing between the mass media and social media. Metaphorically, it is a race between a ‘hippo’ (mass media) and cheetah (social media).

Television has never lost its popularity since the day it entered our life, unlike other mass media. One of the only reasons why television should maintain this feature is that the masses do not give up using it actively. Another thing that should be mentioned together with this is that this vehicle has been able to keep up with the changing media structure. Changing and evolving computer-based information tools and environments force communities to adapt. Media tools along with the communities have also taken their place. In this study, the program named Survivor, which is broadcasted on TV8 channel, will be questioned about the structure created by using transmedative narrative strategies. Supported by two television channels, websites, social media tools, forum sites, and smartphone applications, Survivor will be linked to the audience.

Internet usage in Pakistan has been growing exponentially in terms of access, subscriptions and roll-out-of-content and services coupled with the recent mobile broadband innovations. Facebook is considered the most popular social platform, with Google the second followed by Twitter and Instagram (Yusufzai, 2016). In Pakistan over 30 million people are registered internet users out of which, 15 million get access to internet through cellular devices. Over 155,000 Pakistanis have Twitter accounts, whereas the number of Facebook users is considerably higher at 15 million. Social media has been gaining vast popularity among the masses. Cheap mobile broadband coupled with inexpensive smart phones is adding to this number rapidly. People are inclined towards social media to easy and cheap way to spread their opinions, share experiences, offer suggestions and give feedback on topics of common interest. It has led to a massive rise in both positive and negative activities. The Government of Pakistan has certainly taken into account this issue and has taken some meaningful steps and hopes to do more in this sector to curb the unlawful and illegal acts and get a control over it.

This research is motivated to find out the influence of mass media on students' political awareness. The role of mass media in the era of globalization provides a very large role in providing information to students, especially as a voter beginner or 17 years old. Through the media, information about politics is widely spread quickly and widely. The role of PPKn teachers in dealing with the influence of the mass media is the existence of political education provided to students in PPKn subjects. The results showed that at SMK Negeri 1 Cianjur the influence of the mass media on political awareness of students was very large. Technology has a very important role in this case social media, print media and electronic media which contains a lot of information and the role of PPKn teachers as educators in providing understanding to students so that they use mass media more wisely and aim so that the knowledge obtained can be used in community environment, in order to increase student participation, especially in any political activities. Thus, the influence of mass media can significantly increase political awareness (political awareness) of students and be democratic (democratic attitude).Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi untuk mengetahui pengaruh media massa terhadap kesadaran berpolitik siswa. Peran media massa di era globalisasi memberikan peran yang sangat besar dalam memberikan informasi kepada siswa khususnya sebagai pemilih pemula atau berusia 17 tahun. Melalui media, informasi mengenai politik banyak tersebar secara cepat dan meluas. Peran guru PPKn dalam menghadapi pengaruh media massa yaitu dengan adanya pendidikan politik yang diberikan kepada siswa dalam mata pelajaran PPKn. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa di SMK Negeri 1 Cianjur pengaruh media massa terhadap kesadaran berpolitik siswa sangat besar. Teknologi memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam hal ini media sosial, media cetak dan media elektronik yang di dalamnya banyak memuat informasi dan peran guru PPKn sebagai pendidik dalam memberikan pemahaman kepada siswa sehingga memanfaatkan media massa dengan lebih bijaksana dan bertujuan agar pengetahuan yang diperoleh dapat digunakan dalam lingkungan masyarakat, guna meningkatkan partisipasi siswa khususnya dalam setiap kegiatan-kegiatan politik. Language in politics is directed towards the achievement of political objectives, that is gaining power or maintaining power. The language of the politicians is aiming to attract the attention of voters which can be seen in various campaign media, such as banners, advertisements, social media, and excerpts from interviews in the mass media. This research is descriptive research. This research describes the choice of words spoken by the political elite in representing their power. The data in this study are Donald Trump's remarks relating to power. The data source in this study is the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The results of this study found that the choice of words used by Donald Trump is the use of sentence structures in the form of modal lexical.

The article is devoted to the problem of ensuring balance in the realization of two fundamental human rights and freedoms in a democratic society – the right to freedom of speech and privacy. It has been concluded that the rights to freedom of speech and privacy are recognized as fundamental human rights that do not conflict with each other but are intangible, inherent in every person. The right to freedom of journalism is a continuation of the right to freedom of speech and information and consists in the collection, storage, and dissemination of socially important information through the mass media. The usage of the rights in question, including in the mass media actions, may not be grounds for restricting or violating the right of everyone to privacy, the confidentiality of correspondence, correspondence, telephone conversations, and entails criminal liability in cases provided by law. In the public interest, the law provides grounds for exempting a journalist from criminal liability for disclosing confidential information, in particular in the case of disclosure of information of public interest or has already been published in other media, or concerns officials of public authorities.

One of the oldest social science theories applied to the study of communication, the gatekeeping approach emphasizes the movement of bits of information through channels, with an emphasis on decision points (gates) and decision-makers (gatekeepers). Forces on both sides of a gate can either help or hinder the information’s passage through a channel. The gatekeeping process shapes and produces various images of reality, not only because some bits of information are selected and others rejected, but because communication agents put information together in different ways. In addition, the timing and repetition of information can affect the prominence of events or topics and can influence the probability of future information diffusion. Gatekeeping was originally modeled as a series of linear processes within the mass media, but in the late 20th century the flow of information through the mass and social media began to interact. Information is now understood to flow among journalists, among social media users, and among agents of both types of media. All such communication agents are gatekeepers. In addition, we can study these networked interconnections as one level of analysis, with the supra-gatekeepers (such as Facebook or Twitter) adding their own gatekeeping processes over and beyond those of their own clients of the mass media. In addition to looking at various pairwise relationships between gatekeepers, gatekeeping theory should go beyond to instead consider the entire web of gatekeepers as a whole or system. A system is composed of elements (gatekeepers), interactions (relationships among them), and a goal or function. Multiple functions have been proposed by 20th-century scholars (such as socialization, entertainment, or surveillance) for the mass media, but scholars should now consider the function(s) of the gatekeeping system (mass and social media, as well as supra-gatekeepers) as a whole. Although each type of medium can be analyzed as its own system, such analysis would not facilitate new thinking about the various ways in which these partial systems affect one another and how the whole system functions beyond the simple addition of its parts.

We present a classification of the types of censorship of media to frame the various issues that journalism and freedom of expression face in Mexico, which mainly include the role of the State in preventing or enforcing censorship, the monopoly of a few corporate groups that control most of the mass media and dictate fixed editorial lines throughout all of them, the effect of violence on journalism and the issues that are emerging around the freedom of expression in social media.

A long, seemingly endless list of names of men and women “worthy of shame,” aimed at publicly shaming them, has taken the mass media and public authorities by storm. Such public shaming practices can be traced back to the Byzantine era, when culprits were made to sit backwards on a donkey as a punishment, or the judge placed his hands in cinder and smeared their faces with black film, thus publically pillorying them, based on the conviction that a punishment's most important aspect is social stigma and shame induced by public acts. This chapter examines various examples of “public shaming” lists and the general problematic of non-discrete publicizing of a full list of names.
