A Formal Framework for Scalable Component-Based Systems

Constructing systems from components and building components for different systems require well-established methodologies and processes. This article proposes a formal framework for designing and specifying component-based systems (CBS). The two-dimensional evolutions of CBS are architectural reconfiguration and behavioral adaptation, when user requirements and/or runtime contexts change. This framework provides an incremental design methodology where component interfaces and their corresponding ports are the basic units of software construction, rather than components. Conceptually, interfaces serve to assemble simple components to obtain more complex ones. Behaviorally, they serve to propagate side effects of visible changes of a component on its neighbors. Interfaces also supply interactions and synchronization effects on the underlying sub-system. The calculation process is guided by changes on interfaces where the hierarchical structure of the underlying CBS is maintained. In this framework, CBS specification is supported by some execution tools based on Maude.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of C-shaped QFD 3D Matrix in comparing process characteristics (PC), performance aspects (PA) and customer requirements, simultaneously and to prioritize the first two sets, respectively. Design/methodology/approach A three dimensional matrix has been developed with three sets of PC, PA and customers’ requirements and C-shaped matrix has been applied for simultaneous comparison of the dimensions and prioritization of the subsets of PC and PA. The proposed approach has been examined in a post bank. Findings Findings confirm the possibility of simultaneous comparison and prioritization of the three sets of dimensions of this study in post bank services. In addition, “growth and learning” and “bilateral relationship with suppliers” had the first priorities among PA and PC, respectively. Research limitations/implications While the proposed approach has many advantages, filling the matrixes is time-consuming. Since illustrating the 3D matrix was not possible, the matrix was separated into five two-dimensional matrixes. Originality/value Compared to the studied literature, the proposed approach is practically new in the post bank services.

With the tremendous increase of web services published online, the problem of selecting the best service offers becomes more challenging. Users need to make their decisions on multiple and conflicting non-functional requirements. It is a natural fit to apply the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) theory to the service selection and ranking process. In our proposed QoS-based service selection system, we take the user-centric standpoint to design the system. We improve the original MCDM models so that the user requirements on the QoS criteria are included in the rank calculation process. Our proposed QoS weighting method considers the well-defined ANP method combined with the user-defined weights. We compared the improved selection methods and we found that the Constraint Programming method is the best in terms of its sensitivity to the changes made to the QoS weights. Consequently, the results produced from this comparison would be presented to the user.

Purpose Due to the growing dominance of the millennials in the secondhand clothing (SHC) market, it is crucial to understand the dynamics of their SHC buying behavior. Despite such significance, it has yet to be explored in the current literature. To address such a gap, this paper aims to explore the antecedents of the SHC buying behavior of millennials. Design/methodology/approach A purposive survey is conducted to establish relationships between the antecedents. As such, the interrelationships of the antecedents are modeled using the interpretative structural modeling (ISM) approach. Findings Results reveal that SHC antecedents exhibit several characteristics depending upon their characterization of being driving, dependence, linkage and autonomous variables. Originality/value This work pioneers the identification of SHC buying behavior antecedents specifically for the millennial market, as well as in the provision of a holistic analysis of the complex contextual relationships of these antecedents. The findings of this work provide insights that are crucial to the extant literature in developing theoretical frameworks and paradigms that help in understanding the dynamics of the SHC buying behavior. Moreover, such results are beneficial to marketing managers and practitioners in innovating their strategies to capture the millennial market better.

Purpose This study aims to examine the magneto-elastohydrodynamic effect on finite-width slider-bearings lubrication using a non-Newtonian lubricant. Design/methodology/approach Based on the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory and Stokes micro-continuum mechanics, the modified two-dimensional Reynolds equation including bearing deformation was derived. Findings It is found that the bearing deformation diminishes the load-capacity and increases the friction coefficient in comparison with the rigid case. However, the non-Newtonian effect increases load-capacity but decreases the friction coefficient. Moreover, the use of a transverse magnetic field increases both the friction coefficient and load capacity. Originality/value This study combines for the first time MHD and elastic deformation effects on finite-width slider-bearings using a non-Newtonian lubricant.

This paper discusses a recent three-dimensional assembly process called the Plastic Deformation Magnetic Assembly (PDMA) method. The PDMA method allows three dimensional micromechanical structures to be realized efficiently using surface micromachining and wafer-scale, post-sacrificial-release assembly. We will discuss the principle of the PDMA method, along with the design methodology. The PDMA process has been used for a number of applications, including vertical micro RF inductors, micromachined hot wire anemometers, artificial lateral line sensors, and two dimensional neuron probes. The process for these applications will be discussed to illustrate the usefulness of the PDMA process.

Beamtrees are a new method for the visualization of large hierarchical data sets, such as directory structures and organization structures. Nodes are shown as stacked circular beams such that both the hierarchical structure as well as the size of nodes are depicted. The dimensions of beams are calculated using a variation of the treemap algorithm. Both a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional variant are presented. A small user study indicated that beamtrees are significantly more effective than nested treemaps and cushion treemaps for the extraction of global hierarchical information.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a detailed account of the evolution of the fair trade discourse of a Belgian fair trade organization, with a specific focus on the changes in the combination of the organization’s trade and social (movement) dimensions. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on an analysis of the organization’s discourse as found in the member magazine at four periods. These four periods cover different phases in the life history of the organization and in the broader fair trade field. Findings Throughout the organization’s history, both social (movement) and trade dimensions know drastic changes, also in their mutual relationship. In the earliest history, trade practices are clearly subordinate to goals of a socialist-inspired societal change, while in the more recent history, trade has permeated the entire discourse, putting the trade dimension in a more central position. However, both dimensions seem to evolve in a connected way, as the discourse shows clear similarities on both, and evolutions can be related to changes in the organization’s broader field. Originality/value Focusing on the discourse of a specific fair trade organization breaks with a tradition of broad notions of a fair trade history. Moreover, this case provides insight into the evolution of the mix of both social and economic dimensions within a specific organization, and connects this to evolutions in the broader (fair trade) field.

Hierarchical TiO 2/carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by oxidation of two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets at different temperatures. Crystal structures and morphologies of the obtained samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that 2D Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets are partially oxidized to form a novel hierarchical nanostructure which is composed of carbon nanosheets and TiO 2 nanoparticles. With the calcination temperature increasing, the crystal structure of TiO 2 nanoparticles changes from anatase to rutile and the hierarchical structure was gradually destroyed. The photodegradation results reveal that the samples obtained at 200°C and 285°C show much better photocatalytic properties than P25. And meanwhile the photocatalytic property will become worse with the increase in calcinations temperature.

PurposeThe present study examines the dimensions that are meaningful to define the perceived authenticity of online-only brands (OOBs) (i.e. retail brands that trade exclusively online) from a consumer's perspective. Past frameworks of perceived authenticity exist in the branding literature but consistently focus on contexts beyond e-commerce settings like OOBs.Design/methodology/approachWe employed a mixed-method research design, consisting of quasi-qualitative and quantitative studies with online customers, to establish the dimensions meaningful for the perceived authenticity of OOBs. Our work has theory testing and building components.FindingsWe identify five dimensions that are meaningful to define consumers' perceived authenticity of OOBs. They are “honesty”, “connection”, “continuity”, “craftsmanship” and “accessibility”. Representing by multiple factors, “craftsmanship” serves as the most meaningful dimension followed by “accessibility”. Often being considered incompatible with perceived authenticity, we find accessibility particularly relevant to the context of OOBs. It describes the “convenient” and “affordable” aspects of OOBs, which typically serve as unique selling propositions.Originality/valueOur work confirms the utility of established dimensions to define consumers' perceived authenticity of OOBs. This highlights that consumers hold some consistent authenticity image between non-online and online brands. Our work also reveals the accessibility dimension being neglected by the branding literature, suggesting a more up-to-date perspective is needed when studying consumers' perceived authenticity of OOBs.
