Advancements in organizational information systems and developments in business environments have brought important changes to the contemporary management practices and business models. Organizations have evolved beyond their specific and general environments towards business ecosystems. This study investigates the evolutions of organizational information systems and business environments in the contexts of business ecosystem. Based on an evolutionary study of organizational information systems and business ecosystem an ontological model is proposed for adoption of new technologies in the real world designs with particular attention to the application of technology. The authors call for further empirical and conceptual research in understanding and exploring the role of business ecosystems in organizational operations and industrial ecosystems.

Purpose – From interviews in 2013 with more than 875 CEOs of companies in a variety of industries from around the world, IBM researchers found that the majority of them rank technology as the top issue they expect will exert the strongest influence on their organizations and strategy. this paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – This report is the third installment in an ongoing Global C-suite Study, the seventeenth such IBM study to focus on the C-suite. To compile the data for the meta study, between February and June 2013, researchers met with 4,183 top executives, representing a wide range of public and private sector enterprises in more than 20 industries and 70 countries. This report focuses on the responses of more than 875 CEOs from 67 countries who participated in the meta study. Findings – Analysis of the interviews identified three responses proactive firms have adopted to prepare for the future: embrace disruption; build shared value; and dare to be open. Research limitations/implications – Create experimentation spaces. Runaway innovation requires places and spaces where people can think, interact and experiment. The creation of these innovation spaces should be a priority. These should include: physical spaces where co-located people with different backgrounds can cross-pollinate each other’s ideas; virtual spaces where large numbers of people across different locations can focus on specific topics; and the building of business ecosystems. Business environments are beginning to evolve from markets to ecosystems. Organizations that identify new ways to serve customers holistically will define new business ecosystems and benefit the most. Practical implications – Taking action to embrace disruption: move out of bounds. Bringing together people from different industries, backgrounds, regions – and even generations – will be essential to predict and respond to new competitive threats. Expanding partnerships to deepen innovation capabilities will speed the discovery of new technologies and new business models. Originality/value – CEOs in just about every industry have learned that customers, partners and employees that collaborate can go further, faster in an era of runaway innovation. Many are pushing the boundaries on their organizations as a result – opening up to empower collaboration among individuals and moving away from command-and-control hierarchies. In just one year the number of CEOs determined to open up their organizations has increased an astounding 27 percent.

The introduction of new technologies to accumulate large amounts of data has resulted in the need for new methods to secure organizational information. Current information security strategies tend to focus on a technology-based approach to securing information. However, this technology-based approach can leave an organization vulnerable to information security threats. Organizations must realize that information security is not necessarily a technology issue, but rather a social issue. Humans operate, maintain, and use information systems. Their actions, whether intentional or accidental, are the real threat to organizations. Information security strategies must be developed to address the social issue.

The mobile local government services topic is an area that needs relentless attention and continuous steps towards its improvement taking advantage of the new technologies. Mobile technologies help in advancing municipal information systems, providing the citizens with the opportunity to perform easily routine transactions through their mobile devices anywhere-anytime.In order to have sustainable and useful mobile G2C information systems services, there is high need to successfully integrate the mobile government concept with the business model concept; such concepts could harmonically co-exist and yield fruitful results.This dissertation attempts to provide guidelines that could be used to highlight key tasks, which can steer successful development path through strategic steps and stages integrated into a theoretical framework, the GoMobi framework. To reach this point, there is a number of secondary objectives accomplished including: literature review of the concepts of mobile government and of business models, mapping of existing services, forming of a typology of mobile G2C services, and analysis of their value propositions. The theoretical model (GoMobi) is, finally, validated through case studies conduction.The findings of such dissertation contribute valuably to both theory and practice. The comprehensiveness of the mobile G2C services value propositions and barriers grounded theories, the inclusiveness of the mobile G2C services typology, the completeness of the mapping of the provided mobile G2C services in Greece, the integrity of the conceptual review of the business models dimensions, and the fruitfulness and flexibility of the GoMobi framework development, are innovative aspects in the academic environment. Finally, practitioners interested in entering the mobile government sector can be aware of the sector’s demands, additionally to having a holistic view of how to design, create, communicate, compare, analyze, evaluate, and modify their existing and future business dimensions of provided mobile information systems services.

A digital marketplace is a virtual platform that creates values by managing interactions and transactions among participants in a multi-sided network. It creates a business ecosystem to support all participants, especially buyers and sellers, to transact efficiently and conveniently. Lately, digital marketplaces have created significant impact and disruption in many industries all over the world. As digital marketplace firms provide innovative, efficient business models as well as supportive business ecosystems, they may disrupt conventional firms that rely on physical interactions. Equipped with digital tools for transactions and interactions and supported by digital business ecosystems, digital marketplace firms can grow quickly and hence pose a serious threat to conventional firms. This paper discusses foundation theories related to digital marketplace such as transaction cost economy, network externalities, two-sided markets, and value network and uses these theories to construct a framework for observing digital marketplace.

Today digital information sources and digital records are an indispensable part of our personal and business environments. The basic components that affect information systems which are used as a means for productivity and efficiency in organizations are organization culture, organizational information management systems, the procedures for organizational work, and information technologies. This chapter aims to analyze the existing conditions of knowledge and communication systems in 118 organizations that take part in different service sectors in Turkey depending on the InterPARES 3 Project methodology and similar studies carried out in the field. Thus, it is intended to investigate where the conditions that affect the functioning of information systems adversely stem from, what kind of improvements need to be done and what the good and weak sides of the information systems are.

Security became a topic of research with the introduction of networked information systems, or networked IS, in the early eighties. In the mid-nineties the proliferation of the Internet in the business area exposed security as one of the key factors for successful online business, and the majority of effort to provide it was focused on technology. However, due to lessons learned during this period, the paradigms have since changed, with increasing emphasis on human factors. It is a fact that security of information systems is becoming part of the core processes in all e-business environments. While data is clearly one of the key assets and has to be protected accordingly, IS have to be highly integrated and open. Appropriate treatment of these issues is not a trivial task for managers of intelligent enterprises and requires new approaches, especially in light of new technologies.

Circular economy has emerged as a sustainable alternative to the traditional, linear, extract-produce-use-dump economy. The scientific society, practitioners, policymakers, and business sectors are all actively taking part in driving the transition toward circular economy in their own sectors. Every sector is striving to address the environmental issues of their own area, and to find solutions to the problem of resource scarcity. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the general status of circular economy research and applied projects. Finland aims to be a global pioneer in this field, which is why there is a tremendous boost in research in various fields of sustainable materials management. Therefore, there is a need to have a better perspective of the research society’s efforts to accelerate the transition to circular economy. The objective of this paper is to review scientific research and practices of circular economy transition in Finland, in order to categorize and analyze them. The paper aims to give an insight into the current status and provide a comprehensive understanding of the trend changes during the past 20 years. The analysis shows that there is growing attention to circular economy in many research fields, researchers and practitioners in all fields have responded to the need of the society. However, the recycling-based ‘end-of-pipe’ interpretation of circular economy is still more dominant than developing and implementing strategies for circular product design, dematerializing society, and developing service-based business models. It is important to bear in mind that circular economy is about much more than improved resource flows and waste management practices. Achieving a circular economy needs the engagement of the society, it needs invention and innovation and it also requires the creation of new technologies, products, services, and business models. This study gives a comprehensive perspective at the national level and addresses the key actions and sectors which require more investment and attention from the scientific community to boost the transition toward circular economy. There are some limitation in this study derived from the method of data collection and selection of databases. Due to this, there may be valuable works that were not published, or only in the Finnish language and were, therefore, not identified in this study.

Global economic restructuring, especially the geographic expansion of commodity networks during the 1990s and 2000s, had a profound effect on logistics workers. This chapter examines how companies used new technologies and scientific management techniques to produce labor regimes that cut costs and added value to distribution practices. Some of these technologies included barcodes, radio-frequency identification (RFID), and computer tracking software. Retailers used such technologies to develop sophisticated inventory systems and point-of-sale (POS) information databases that allowed them to implement just-in-time (JIT) production and distribution business models. In addition to these technological systems, retailers and third-party logistics companies (3PLs) or subcontractors also developed new just-in-time management practices and labor regimes. Less time and more goods became the mantra for retailers, who embraced shorter commodity cycles, dispersed production, and flexible labor.
