In this article the authors discuss a new method of the so-called complex networks dynamics and its visualization by means of so called coupled map lattices method. The main aim of this article is to investigate whether it is possible to visualize complex network dynamics by means of the same method that is used to model spatiotemporal chaos. The authors suggest using coupled map lattices system to simulate complex network so that each site is equal to one vertex of complex network. Interaction between network vertices is in coupled map lattices equal to the strength of mutual influence between system sites. To promote their ideas, two kinds of complex networks dynamics has been selected for visualization, i.e., network with increasing number of vertices and network with constant number of vertices. All results have been properly visualized and explained.

In a complex network, each edge has different functions on controllability of the whole network. A network may be out of control due to failure or attack of some specific edges. Bridges are a kind of key edges whose removal will disconnect a network and increase connected components. Here, we investigate the effects of removing bridges on controllability of network. Various strategies, including random deletion of edges, deletion based on betweenness centrality, and deletion based on degree of source or target nodes, are used to compare with the effect of removing bridges. It is found that the removing bridges strategy is more efficient on reducing controllability than the other strategies of removing edges for ER networks and scale-free networks. In addition, we also found the controllability robustness under edge attack is related to the average degree of complex networks. Therefore, we propose two optimization strategies based on bridges to improve the controllability robustness of complex networks against attacks. The effectiveness of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by simulation results of some model networks. These results are helpful for people to understand and control spreading processes of epidemic across different paths.

The exponential synchronization for a class of discrete-time uncertain complex networks with stochastic effects and time delay is investigated by using the Lyapunov stability theory and discrete Halanay inequality. The uncertainty arises from the difference of the nodes’ reliability in the complex network. Through constructing an appropriate Lyapunov function and applying inequality technique, some synchronization criteria and two control methods are obtained to ensure the considered complex network being exponential synchronization. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

In order to improve the accuracy of air pollution management and promote the efficiency of coordinated inter-regional prevention and control, this study analyzes the interaction of O3 in Qilihe District, Lanzhou City, China. Data used for analysis was obtained from 63 air quality monitoring stations between November 2017 and October 2018. This paper uses complex network theory to describe the network structure characteristics of O3 pollution spatial correlation. On this basis, the node importance method is used to mine the sub-network with the highest spatial correlation in the O3 network, and use transfer entropy theory to analyse the interaction of pollutants between regions. The results show that the O3 area of Qilihe District, Lanzhou City can be divided into three parts: the urban street community type areas in urban areas, the township and village type areas in mountain areas and the scattered areas represented by isolated nodes. An analysis of the mutual influence of O3 between each area revealed that the impact of O3 on each monitoring station in adjacent areas will vary considerably. Therefore these areas cannot be governed as a whole, and the traditional extensive management measures based on administrative divisions cannot be used to replace all other regional governance measures. There is the need to develop a joint prevention and control mechanism tailored to local conditions in order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of O3 governance.

Evolutionary processes of many complex networks in reality are dominated by duplication and divergence. This mechanism leads to redundant structures, i.e. some nodes share most of their neighbors and some local patterns are similar, called redundancy of network. An interesting reverse problem is to discover evolutionary information from the present topological structure. We propose a quantitative measure of redundancy of network from the perspective of principal component analysis. The redundancy of a community in the empirical human metabolic network is negatively and closely related with its evolutionary age, which is consistent with that for the communities in the modeling protein–protein network. This behavior can be used to find the evolutionary difference stored in cellular networks.

Abstract Background Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) outcome prediction is a challenging issue which the assisted reproductive technology (ART) practitioners are dealing with. Predicting the success or failure of IUI based on the couples' features can assist the physicians to make the appropriate decision for suggesting IUI to the couples or not and/or continuing the treatment or not for them. Many previous studies have been focused on predicting the in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcome using machine learning algorithms. But, to the best of our knowledge, a few studies have been focused on predicting the outcome of IUI. The main aim of this study is to propose an automatic classification and feature scoring method to predict intrauterine insemination (IUI) outcome and ranking the most significant features. Methods For this purpose, a novel approach combining complex network-based feature engineering and stacked ensemble (CNFE-SE) is proposed. Three complex networks are extracted considering the patients' data similarities. The feature engineering step is performed on the complex networks. The original feature set and/or the features engineered are fed to the proposed stacked ensemble to classify and predict IUI outcome for couples per IUI treatment cycle. Our study is a retrospective study of a 5-year couples' data undergoing IUI. Data is collected from Reproductive Biomedicine Research Center, Royan Institute describing 11,255 IUI treatment cycles for 8,360 couples. Our dataset includes the couples' demographic characteristics, historical data about the patients' diseases, the clinical diagnosis, the treatment plans and the prescribed drugs during the cycles, semen quality, laboratory tests and the clinical pregnancy outcome. Results Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods with Area under receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of 0.84 ± 0.01, sensitivity of 0.79 ± 0.01, specificity of 0.91 ± 0.01, and accuracy of 0.85 ± 0.01 for the prediction of IUI outcome. Conclusions The most important predictors for predicting IUI outcome are semen parameters (sperm motility and concentration) as well as female body mass index (BMI).

Nowadays, the topology of complex networks is essential in various fields as engineering, biology, physics, and other scientific fields. We know in some general cases that there may be some unknown structure parameters in a complex network. In order to identify those unknown structure parameters, a topology identification method is proposed based on a chaotic ant swarm algorithm in this paper. The problem of topology identification is converted into that of parameter optimization which can be solved by a chaotic ant algorithm. The proposed method enables us to identify the topology of the synchronization network effectively. Numerical simulations are also provided to show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

There is a rather recent tendency to define the physical structure and the control structure of a system concurrently when designing the architecture of a product, i.e., to perform codesign. We argue that co-design can only be enabled when the mutual influence between physical system and control is made evident to the designer at an early stage. Though the idea of design integration is not new, to the best of our knowledge, there is no computer tooling that explicitly supports this activity by enabling co-design as stated before. In this paper the authors propose a method for co-design of physical and control architectures as a better approach to design mechatronic systems, allowing to exploit the synergy between software and hardware and detecting certain design problems at an early stage of design. The proposed approach is supported by a set of tools and demonstrated through an example case.
