Is Group-Awareness Context-Awareness?

This article discusses the interest of emerging a unified view for group awareness and context information on groupware and context-aware systems. Group awareness corresponds to an important concept on Groupware applications, allowing individual users to be kept aware of group's activities and status. Context is defined by ubiquitous computing as any relevant information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity. We assume that group awareness information should be considered as context information and handled as such. Group awareness information is often employed for decision making, contributing to users' activities and decisions, but it gives also an important clue about user's context, characterizing individual's actions regarding the group. As such, group awareness may be used for adaptation purposes, adapting the system behavior, the supplied content or its services. Besides, architectural concerns adopted on context-aware system should also be considered when developing new groupware applications that are more and more designed as context-aware systems.

Shopping in the real world is becoming an increasingly interactive experience as stores integrate various technologies to support shoppers. Based on an empirical study of supermarket shoppers, the authors designed a mobile context-aware system called the Context-Aware Shopping Trolley (CAST). The purpose of CAST is to support shopping in supermarkets through context-awareness and acquiring user attention, thus, the authors’ interactive trolley guides and directs shoppers in the handling and finding of groceries. An empirical evaluation showed that shoppers using CAST behaved differently than shoppers using a traditional trolley. Specifically, shoppers using CAST exhibited a more uniform pattern of product collection and found products more easily while travelling a shorter distance. As such, the study finds that CAST supported the supermarket shopping activity.

Context Awareness is the task of inferring contextual data acquired through sensors present in the environment. ‘Context’ encompasses all knowledge bounded by a scope and includes attributes of machines and users. A general context aware system is composed of context gathering and context inference modules. This paper proposes a Context Inference Engine (CiE) that classifies the current context as one of several recorded context activities. The engine follows a distance measure based classification approach with standard deviation based ranks to identify likely activities. The paper presents the algorithm and some results of the context classification process.

We present a society of personal information agents that work for a community of users and that are aware of the physical and social context of their users. We show how context-awareness is a feature that allows the agents to improve their performance when they work with limited resources in information spaces with a large amount of information. The use of context information allows the agents to focus their information search and, as a result of this, increase the quantity and quality of information delivered to the user. Moreover, we propose an implemented agent architecture with context-aware capabilities. We discuss this architecture in detail, focusing on the capability of exploiting the windows of opportunity provided by the awareness of the users' activity. The agents use these windows of opportunity to furnish the user with information and advice in the situation where it can be most useful. In particular, we show how context-aware information agents can assist a community of attendees to big conferences and fairs. In this application, an information agent gathers relevant information based on a model of specific interests of a user. Given the multiplicity of interesting events, and their distribution in time and space, an information agent has to deliver the gathered information in a few hours and comply to the schedule constraints. Finally, we report some experimentation results to illustrate how context-awareness improve the service a society of information agents provides to a community of users in the conference application.

The production of smart, seamless and economical devices has paved the way for the development of context aware systems. Context awareness allows a system to classify the current activity based on the context as measured by the sensors present in the devices. With the presence of multiple devices and services in the environment security threats are expected. The threats can be modelled during the design phase. This article presents a flow model of a context aware system that classifies current activity based on the context. The threat modelling of the context aware system is carried out using STRIDE classification. The common countermeasures are also presented.

In recent years, many researchers have studied context-awareness to support non-intrusive adaptability of context-aware applications. Context-aware applications benefit from emerging technology that connects everyday objects and provides opportunities to collect and use context information from various sources. Context-awareness helps to adapt continuously to new situations and to turn a static computing environment into a dynamic ecology of smart and proactive applications. In this chapter, we present our framework that manages and uses context information to adapt applications and the content they provide. We show how application adaptation can be handled at the composition level, by reconfiguring, redeploying and rewiring components, e.g. to fall back into reduced functionality mode when redeploying an application on a handheld. The key features of our context-aware adaptation framework notonly include local adaptations of context-aware applications and content, but also the addressing of context in large scale networks and the contextaware redeployment of running applications in a distributed setting. We discuss how adaptation is handled along various levels of abstraction (user, content, application, middleware, network) and illustrate the flexibility of context-aware content and application adaptation by means of a realistic use case scenario.

To support users in performing their tasks, applications need a better understanding of the current situation they are being used in. This chapter gives an overview of how knowledge of the current context, that is, information characterizing the situation, can be represented and how this knowledge can be used for enhancing applications. We discuss what is actually meant by “context” and “context-aware” applications. Further, we describe what has to be considered when building a context-aware application. We thereby focus on the representation of context information and how to deal with its unreliable nature. This chapter should sensitize the reader to the difficulties of using context information and give guidelines on how to build an application that benefits from knowing its current context.

Although a number of initiatives provide personalized context-aware guidance for niche use-cases, a standard framework for context awareness remains lacking. This article explains how semantic technology has been exploited to generate a centralized repository of personal activity context. This data drives advanced features such as, personal situation recognition and customizable rules for the context-sensitive management of personal devices and data sharing. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate how an innovative context-aware system has successfully adopted such an infrastructure.

We conducted interviews with two surgeons from the department of gastrointestinal surgery at the University Hospital of North Norway. The results confirmed that interruptions from mobile devices were a problem, especially in surgical theatres, outpatient wards, emergency wards and inpatient rooms. Users in hospitals, especially surgeons and physicians, need a better communication system. Our proposed system would intercept the signals from the existing communication system before they are sent out to the mobile devices. The signals would then be routed through a context-aware system, paired with context information and available rules defined by the doctor, which will decide what to do with the call/page. A single device which integrates both the pager and the phone system, and makes use of context information to control interruptions automatically yet allow the caller to decide whether to interrupt, would be highly appreciated by the users.
